Today we're in London and we're looking at the best hacks that you can use to help save the environment and yourselves a little bit of money
0:07
I'm George and welcome back to The Hack. we all know that reducing food waste is one of the best ways to help us save the planet
0:31
apps like too good to go are really good at helping you do this they offer food that would
0:35
otherwise be wasted at the end of the day for a fraction of the price
0:39
okay so we just picked up this mystery breakfast bag from novatel
0:54
and let's take a look and see what we've got inside okay so in our bag we've got two forks a napkin and this little box let's see what we've actually
1:06
got okay okay you know what that looks to be like almost a full english breakfast in there
1:17
we paid two pound fifty for this and had we not bought it this would have just ended up in the
1:22
bin now this was only cooked a few hours ago so there's absolutely nothing wrong with it let's dig in
1:36
Another thing that might seem really obvious is taking public transport. Every time you
1:43
step on a bus or a tube you're already sharing those emissions with your fellow passengers
1:48
resulting in less cars on the road. So next up we're looking at ways we can be a bit more savvy when we shop that will help
1:55
reduce our environmental impact on the planet. So one of the best ways you can help save the environment is by being more ethical when
2:14
you shop. Now we're here at Get Loose in Hackney City Farm, which is a zero waste organic non-profit store
2:21
Now all the money made from this business goes back into reducing waste in the supply
2:25
chain and helping build sustainable and biodegradable packaging for their products Like I said everything here is biodegradable recyclable or package free altogether
2:50
Now businesses like Loose Foods are great because they're not only great for the environment
2:54
but they put back a lot into the communities that they serve
2:58
Now, you might not be so fortunate to have a shop like that near you
3:02
but there are some other ways that you can still shop ethically in your local supermarkets
3:13
So this app called Geeky Badges is a really great way of helping you shop ethically in your local supermarket
3:19
It lets you scan products on the supermarket shelf and it will tell you how sustainable they are, how responsibly sourced they are, how healthy they are, how organic they are and how big the carbon footprint is when it comes to reducing them
3:34
If you don't have access to a smartphone, no worries. All you need to do is look for locally sourced produce within the supermarket
3:41
And this information should be displayed on the outside of the packaging or on the shelves
3:49
So we can see that these sausages aren't very good. As you can see, it's only been awarded one out of the six badges on offer
4:01
So in terms of its environmental impact, it's not great. You can look for an alternative
4:06
In fact, what's great about this app is that there is a button right there that you press
4:12
and it will suggest a list of alternative, more eco-friendly products similar to the
4:17
you've just scanned that you can buy. So if you don't have a smartphone accessible to you, one hack that you can do to know how
4:26
sustainable your food is, is that for anything that's labelled British produce, the eco footprint
4:32
on this is a lot less and it's a lot more sustainable and it supports local farmers as well
4:39
So we've just found some great products inside the co-op. Now this is called Rubies in the Rubble
4:44
It's a condiment that's made out of food destined for waste. This company do all sorts of great stuff
4:51
They're all plant-based, gluten-free, vegan. Now on the other hand, we've found Toast Pale Ale
4:57
It a similar concept What this company does is they brew new beers from surplus bread Both of these products helping to cut down on food waste and you helping to support them when you buy them
5:21
We're standing here in Buck Street Market, which is one of the UK's first sustainable markets
5:26
Now, the whole thing is made out of recycled shipping containers. It houses 26 sustainable food retailers and over 50 ethical fashion retailers
5:38
We're in Dorsten and we're looking for a vintage fashion shop to go and have a look at
5:43
Now, how could we find this? We could go on Google and type in vintage fashion shops near me or we could use this
5:50
Ecosia. This is an eco-friendly web browser that lets you surf the web and save the planet at the same time
5:57
All of the money generated through ad revenue is reinvested into restoration projects that help reduce our carbon emissions
6:04
Another way that you can help reduce your impact on the environment whilst looking really cool at the same time is shopping vintage
6:12
Now vintage clothes are great because you know they're good quality because they've already stood the test of time
6:17
and buying something old and used rather than something new helps cut down the 206,000 tons
6:25
of clothes that go into landfill every year. Being eco-friendly doesn't have to just be about the way you shop and what you consume
6:41
It can also be the way you act as a tourist and the activities you do
6:45
introducing the eco cab Okay, so right now we're sat on an electric assisted pedal bike being given a private tour of famous landmarks around London
7:07
With this particular tour you can download an app to go alongside with it which uses geotag locations to automatically play audio clips when you pass a famous landmark
7:17
Now it's a great way for eco tourists to get around and see and learn a bit about the city
7:33
So that is a great fun eco way to get around the city and just to see and learn some of its history
7:41
The best thing about it is that Voluva, the company who conduct the tours also offer a
7:46
cab service. So say you're on a night out or you're somewhere and you want to get somewhere and you want
7:51
to be eco-conscious, there is your answer. We're standing in one of London's first and only eco-friendly gyms
8:10
What makes this gym different from normal gyms is, well, it's eco-friendly
8:14
There are quite a few things that are special about this gym and I'm going to show you just a few of them now
8:19
So first of all, if we come down here, we'll notice that all of these rubber weight plates are made from recycled materials
8:26
over here your resistance machines make resistance by using water recycled leather but here's the
8:35
best part follow me up here at the top of the gym is its beating heart quite literally with these
8:42
spin bikes now these spin bikes generate electricity and one spin class can generate between
8:49
1,500 and 3,300 watts. Just to put that in perspective, that's enough to power a desktop
8:57
computer for a whole working day. Now this energy that they create gets pumped back into the gym
9:03
and helps to power all the electricity. I mean, working for free
9:12
Now I can't leave this gym without giving it a contribution. And that concludes today's video
9:33
Now, you have to remember that these aren't things that should change your life drastically
9:39
They're small things that we can all do and take away and use in our everyday lives to help everyone be in a better boat
