opponents have hit a total of 44 threes
0:02
against you guys. They're shooting over
0:04
around 50% from out there. What has been
0:06
the consistent problem with you guys
0:08
stopping the three?
0:10
I don't think you can um
0:14
point to one uh specific thing. I think
0:17
it's coming from a number of different
0:19
directions. I think not getting picked
0:21
up in transition, uh short closeouts,
0:25
um no pressure, um
0:30
on the ball, um
0:35
late rotations,
0:38
um kickouts from offensive rebounds,
0:42
um
0:44
just coming from a number of different
0:46
directions. Give me a follow up.
0:49
Although I know typ typically you don't
0:51
go to his home team caring a bunch of
0:52
threes, but if you change things up just
0:54
defensively just to sort of shake up how
0:56
they run their stuff, could that maybe
0:58
have a positive impact because a lot of
1:00
the threes again looks like they're
1:01
coming off of screens and so on.
1:04
Well, we did a number of things uh
1:06
differently defensively. Um um you know,
1:11
we weren't doing any switching off the
1:12
ball to keep certain defenders on
1:14
certain guys. Uh we tried the blue which
1:18
was you know try to get the ball out of
1:20
McCory's hands and you know his ability
1:22
to be able to split and get around and
1:25
um
1:31
you know maybe so I think it's easy to
1:33
say that now. Spencer,
1:35
you talked about it um after the Wake
1:37
Forest game about the keeping the foot
1:38
on the gas and then out there again
1:40
tonight you guys had a couple 12-point
1:41
leads and then right back at like stamp
1:43
came out and you know went on a big run
1:45
and cut the lead back to whether it be
1:47
four or five points I guess. What did
1:48
you see out there tonight specifically
1:50
that kind of prevented the foot on the
1:52
gas that you talked about on Saturday?
1:54
No, I just you know um you're right. I
1:56
mean, we were able to, you know, to get
1:58
some leads in the first half, you know,
2:00
around 12 and then um got into a nice
2:04
rhythm at the uh beginning of the second
2:08
half. And I mean, from an offensive
2:10
standpoint, we're getting what we want.
2:13
It's just um you know defensively we're
2:16
just not getting sustained stops you
2:18
know and it's you know two three minute
2:21
stretches where
2:24
you know teams will go on a seven or
2:26
nine point run and it's something that's
2:29
been happening to us all year and it's
2:30
something that's just going to have to
2:32
change moving forward.
2:33
Shelby, I know you said that again the
2:36
defensive issues coming from a number of
2:37
different places. seemed like a lot of
2:39
what Santor was scoring on was just this
2:41
kind of horn set or maybe a variation of
2:43
that. A lot of, you know, isolation off
2:45
of that. What were some of the maybe the
2:46
defensive lapses that you saw
2:48
specifically against like that sort of
2:50
set they run?
2:51
Yeah, I would respectfully disagree with
2:53
that in regards to um it was coming
2:56
from, as I said before, a number of
2:58
different situations. They they were
3:00
scoring threes in, you know, in
3:02
transition. It was coming off of uh
3:05
isolation. it was coming off of ball
3:07
screen late communication
3:09
uh closeouts in in terms of rotations
3:12
and so whether it was you know running a
3:15
consecutive play they were getting
3:17
different things and so you know when
3:19
you have um
3:26
they shot 16 for 28 from three I mean it
3:30
wasn't just a Cory it I mean they they
3:32
had a number of guys Agarall and Um
3:38
they were shooting the ball really well
3:39
from three.
3:41
Yeah, just quick follow on that. Um
3:43
especially with Corey, you know, you
3:45
tried a lot of things out on him. I saw
3:47
one time, you know, sub in Jaden, you
3:49
had him go one-on-one with him, then
3:51
Jiren's picking him up the next time. Um
3:53
if you could just kind of take me
3:54
through some of the different things
3:55
that you um you know, tried specifically
3:58
with him throughout the game. Yeah, I
4:00
mean, you know, obviously he's a really
4:01
gifted player and it's much different
4:04
from a guard who has the ball in his
4:07
hands and something else that's uh
4:09
should be talked about with him is he's
4:12
uh an elite and a willing passer as
4:14
well. And so it's not just, you know, he
4:17
can get fouled and get to the free throw
4:18
line. um put a number of different
4:21
defenders, our best one-on-one
4:23
defenders. We did things uh differently
4:25
defensively where um didn't do any
4:28
switching off the ball to to keep
4:30
matchups, to keep our best defenders on
4:32
him. And um again, he had a big night,
4:35
but there were others that stepped up
4:36
and and did the job.
4:38
Anybody else? I don't want to make the
4:39
Stanford players wait too long.
4:41
When you said a minute ago, answering my
4:42
question that you guys tried blue, is
4:43
that when you rush like a second
4:45
defender and force him to get rid of the
4:46
ball?
4:47
Yes. They were able to convert a few
4:48
times that
4:49
Yeah, they were u they able to convert
4:52
threes uh uh be able to split, get
4:55
around um uh the rotations weren't
4:59
there, you know, interceptors,
5:00
goalenders, and so um that's something
5:03
that we got to look at and we got to get
5:04
better at because it's got to be a part
5:06
of our defense.
5:07
Last one over here on the left, coach,
5:09
quick question. Uh, one of your players,
5:10
I think it was Wilson minute ago said
5:13
that Stanford was running basically the
5:14
same offensive play every time down the
5:17
court. Do you agree with that? And why
5:19
did you make adjustments if that was the
5:21
case?
5:21
Yeah, I mean I I I'm not going to again
5:24
that that would be negligent on my part
5:26
to answer a question uh based on what
5:29
somebody else said. I I you know I don't
5:31
know how you asked it. I don't know the
5:33
context in which he answered it, the
5:34
tone uh which he answered it. And so um
5:39
but congratulate Stanford for winning
5:40
tonight.
5:41
Thank you, coach. Thanks everybody.
5:43
Thank you.
