so obviously great that you won in
0:02
overtime but a lot to probably work on
0:04
and build off of of a game that was
0:06
closer to them maybe it should
0:08
have how do you kind of make sense of
0:10
the the complex emotions of you won the
0:12
game but it was also maybe closer than
0:14
it should have been a lot you need to
0:15
work on um I I would say um I like how
0:19
we we dug it out you know obviously we
0:22
wasn't this we want to be but we made
0:24
big down the stretch and and got the win
0:27
um CLE himself on defense you know made
0:31
a lot of Threes say the first half
0:33
second half got phys on defense for
0:36
there were so many just swings of
0:38
momentum and emotion down the stretch
0:40
what do you think was the one play that
0:43
really swung it in guys's favor for good
0:46
um I don't think it one particular play
0:47
I think it was a whole bunch of things
0:49
that added into one you know um just
0:52
made shots and offensive man we got we
0:54
got stops on defense when we needed them
0:56
um big stops on out of bounds underneath
0:58
uh just I hope things I led to one thing
1:01
that's the little things that coach
1:02
Davis has been talking about this week
1:03
right absolutely absolutely um and it
1:05
showed in what we needed to show but we
1:08
got to do it throughout the whole course
1:09
of the game touched on kind of Defense
1:11
here how does this team find a way to
1:12
lean into a defensive identity a little
1:14
bit more
1:18
um that's a good
1:22
question you got become more a better
1:24
group I feel like you know um we need to
1:26
hold each other account a little bit
1:27
more um and play a little bit more we
1:30
chip on our shoulder like just coming in
1:32
the game not when we're down or when
1:34
we're calling back just have to start
1:35
the game how's the team's kind of
1:38
confidence going into this game during
1:40
this game you know coming off two tough
1:42
losses this game's not going your way
1:43
how's the kind of
1:44
mentality we're all right you know um
1:47
tough gam happen another tonight uh
1:50
winning is easy so we got dub tonight
1:52
and for game you've recently been on the
1:55
wrong side of win possession losses what
1:57
had to change today to make sure that
1:59
didn't happen
2:00
the little things um we we realized that
2:04
we have to do the little things um to
2:05
get it done and we got it done todays
2:08
the end um was huge uh cuz we kind of
2:11
put ourselves in that position a little
2:12
bit um but the way we battled and fall
2:14
to the end we got a lot of crucial
2:16
defensive stops and was able to execute
2:18
on the offens end I mean that's big time
2:20
for us but uh we kind of got to look at
2:22
it as well like this could have been a
2:24
game where we've um had multiple times
2:26
to extend the lead and couldn't get
2:28
stopped but I'm just overall happy that
2:30
uh yeah where did this stops come from
2:32
CU prior to that you guys were
2:33
struggling defensively they were getting
2:35
a ton of open stuff so where did you
2:36
guys dig How deep did you have to dig to
2:38
get those stops at the end regulation
2:40
yeah I mean I feel like the whole game
2:42
you kind of dug yourself in the hole and
2:43
it kind of felt like we was coming out
2:45
of the hole and then we kept
2:48
uh putting ourselves in a position where
2:51
um mishaps were happening so U
2:53
miscommunication on on ball screens a
2:56
low man not being there sometimes low
2:57
man being there and then them spraying
2:59
out so like little little details and
3:01
mistakes like that um put ourselves in
3:04
uh a position where Boston College was
3:06
able to capitalize off of but the way we
3:09
um finish the game out strong especially
3:11
in overtime and got stops when it was
3:12
needed uh was huge for us I just wish we
3:14
could have did that for a full 40 um but
3:17
overall I'm just happy of the way we've
3:19
uh rallied the troops together and was
3:21
able to people can picking a lot of
3:23
things from this game but you're at a
3:24
point in the season now especially
3:26
coming off the two losses you guys have
3:27
is it simply a matter a win is a win you
3:29
take a win and you move forward and just
3:31
try to build because it wins obviously a
3:33
lot better than a loss would have been
3:34
today 100% yeah I'm I'm taking this win
3:37
I know it was ugly but a win is a win
3:39
and you know we're at a point right now
3:40
where we're just trying to stack some
3:41
wins and uh we'll take the wins how they
3:44
come so um it was ugly today but uh
3:47
it'll go up on the score but as a w so
3:48
we're good RJ you were talking about the
3:50
uh the communication you think that was
3:52
kind of leading to you know the the
3:54
Closeouts from three obviously they you
3:55
know were able to kind of get a lot of
3:57
looks they wanted you think
3:58
communication off those screens you were
4:00
talking about B into the I guess the
4:01
struggles to to close out on this I
4:03
think it was communication effort I
4:05
think a lot we lacked a lot of effort
4:06
and cons Just Energy plays that were
4:08
needed that we didn't execute well on
4:10
and that's allowed Boston College to get
4:12
open threes and we were slowing on the
4:13
close out so uh if we eliminate those
4:16
cuz you know we know the answers coach
4:19
ask us like why are we not doing this or
4:21
what are we supposed to be in this
4:22
position uh we actually just have to um
4:25
go out there and act on it rather just
4:27
keep repeating ourselves over and over
4:28
again what do you think along those
4:30
lines how do you think you're were able
4:32
to find the energy at the end it had
4:35
been such a struggle defensively and
4:37
they were scoring so easily but to get
4:39
the 5-second call and the repeated stops
4:42
on the endb at the end of regulation I
4:44
mean how do you think you guys were able
4:45
to sort of turn it around and fix the
4:48
problems on the fly so to speak you know
4:50
what I mean I mean it's it's all within
4:52
it's within um our our souls and and our
4:55
head it's all a mental thing right so we
4:57
had turn the ball over and um um and our
5:00
mindset was we was going to get this
5:02
defensive stop and Drake was phenomenal
5:03
on the ball made a huge impact of kind
5:06
of just pressuring them to uh he got a
5:09
deflection and the ball got out of
5:10
bounds but then forced him to a 5-sec
5:11
call so um it's really all mental that
5:14
we was able to find our energy and we
5:16
was able to kind of finish that the game
5:17
strong uh cuz obviously we had a lot of
5:19
mental lapses throughout the whole game
5:21
but we dug deep within our our mindset
5:23
our mentality of like we're going to get
5:24
this stop we're going to win this game
5:25
and that's what we kept telling each
5:26
other and I think they feel the whole
5:28
team uh throughout the the game you
5:30
mentioned a minute ago about lack of
5:32
energy earlier you guys bring that up a
5:34
lot after a lot of games lack of energy
5:36
how big an obstacle is that for this
5:39
group to have 40 minutes with the energy
5:41
at the right level it's huge right
5:43
because I'm a big believer in like
5:45
playing basketball with passion and
5:47
energy like you can't really be too non
5:49
salant and um just go out there just
5:52
like as my dad would say like in la la
5:53
world like you got to have a sense of
5:55
urgency and an attention of what you
5:57
guys want to do as a team and
5:59
individually to accomplish so um that's
6:01
something that we have to as a team get
6:02
over that hump because uh it's been
6:05
evident that we've been shooting
6:06
ourselves in the foot when we don't have
6:08
energy but then when we do you can see
6:10
we're momentum on our sides ready to
6:11
change the whole game around so as long
6:13
as we constantly just like you know
6:15
speak that to ourselves and as a team as
6:17
a whole like I think we're we have a
6:20
good chance of kind of just making the
6:21
run here coing is it for you when you're
6:24
going through those stretches and you're
6:25
sensing the energy isn't where it needs
6:27
to be it's frustrating but I think
6:29
that's as a leader I think I've been
6:31
doing a good job of the last three games
6:32
is kind of just preaching that and
6:34
staying on guys holding each other
6:36
accountable and obviously it's a little
6:37
bit uncomfortable for me cuz it's been
6:40
um something that I haven't been used to
6:43
in my past four years of being here but
6:45
I realized that you know I have to put
6:47
myself uncomfortable position so um
6:50
taking myself putting myself in a
6:51
comfort zone where I'm able to kind of
6:53
just hold guys accountable and when I
6:55
see guys energies are just dropping just
6:57
raise them up uplift each other uplift
6:59
my team and that's I'm continue to keep
7:00
doing because that's the only way going
7:02
to be able to be in these games what was
7:04
the what was coach Davis's message to
7:06
the team after the game after the game
7:08
yeah um that you know he's obviously
7:11
proud of us and our efforts the way
7:12
we've fought back but at the same time
7:15
he got like he just wants us to play
7:17
with passion play with a a sense of
7:19
urgency but at the same time like just
7:21
understand what this place means to us
7:23
um he just went down the line for the
7:25
coach staffs of you know why they played
7:27
here and what this place means to them
7:29
and it's more more than just the the
7:30
name on the back of the Jersey it's more
7:31
about the name on the front and
7:33
understand that you know this is a place
7:36
where it's going to be hard it's going
7:37
to be difficult you know the spotlights
7:39
are always on us but if we just rely on
7:41
each other and understand that we'll be
7:43
more than fine once we just kind just
7:45
dive into team concept things um the sky
7:48
the roof of his team like he says like
7:49
this team has so much potential so much
7:51
talent to be a really good team
7:54
sometimes it just feels like we're
7:56
holding back as a team if that makes
7:57
sense so we kind of just got to let go
8:01
and just just kind of find
8:03
ourselves if the babe didn't roll all
8:05
the way and that worked sometimes but we
8:07
just had to keep digging in sometimes
8:09
it's a team's night it was their night
8:10
tonight but you know we really we really
8:13
dug in and just you know try to R our
8:15
school in your opinion was there
8:18
shooting well just a result of one of
8:20
those nights where they're hot or was it
8:22
you guys giving them they were
8:24
definitely hot but this isn't the first
8:25
time a team has had you know a really
8:27
good shooting night on us so we
8:29
definitely to play with it how
8:31
frustrating is it for you guys to kind
8:32
of keep having to address the same
8:35
questions and issues game after game as
8:37
far as like defensive intensity it's
8:39
it's it's definitely frustrating the
8:41
coaches are doing their part coach Davis
8:42
is doing more than his part all the
8:44
other coaches are uh you know we just
8:47
have to hear we're a young team I get it
8:50
this and that but you know we're too far
8:51
in the season and not you know hear what
8:53
our coaches are preaching and you know
8:55
I'm not going out and executing so I
8:57
don't know maybe we got to open up our
8:59
ears a little more clean them or
9:00
something but we we got to do something
9:01
to to to hear what they're saying
9:03
because what they're telling us if we
9:04
execute it we'll be more than just fine
9:07
obviously it was done the stretch right
9:08
you clicked in you found it how were you
9:10
guys able to find it when things just
9:12
really seemed like they weren't going
9:13
your way we did not want to lose at all
9:15
we were desperate to win uh and we want
9:18
to do all we could just to make sure we
9:20
got these stop so that's really all it
9:22
was just to just a intention to dig in
9:25
and just be desperate for a win you talk
9:29
about your double double and back in the
9:31
starting lineup but seemed like you
9:32
brought a lot of energy to the team tell
9:35
me about your game that's just what I do
9:37
that's just what I do uh I can score
9:40
this I can get this many rebounds I can
9:42
get however many assists but no matter
9:44
what uh part of my game is just to
9:46
always bring that energy and bring that
9:48
you know spark that the team needs so
9:50
today kind of felt like a complete set
9:52
teral performance just for my energy and
9:54
uh my intensity on defensive end I just
9:57
make sure I did all I could to make sure
9:58
this team win what the the lack the lack
10:01
of closeouts a lot of times you know
10:04
where they got open lanes was that just
10:05
miscommunication in the first half we
10:07
definitely had some lazy Closeouts we
10:08
had some lack of effort close outs in
10:10
the first half uh but in the second half
10:12
you know we were playing a low man and
10:14
we were playing the big rolling uh their
10:15
big is was a dominant big he was getting
10:17
whatever he wanted so we wanted to be in
10:19
on him to make him kick uh but you know
10:23
they kicked and we couldn't get there in
10:25
time A lot of times they knocked it down
10:26
so we adjusted eventually but it's got
10:29
to be earlier along those lines what
10:32
what were you thinking I'm sure you've
10:33
been asked what were you thinking what
10:34
were you feeling at the end of
10:35
regulation when you get the 5sec call
10:38
against them and you're able to get the
10:40
stop when they're trying to decide out
10:42
of bounds there that took forever I mean
10:45
guys have sort of been shredded on
10:47
defense but what were you able to find
10:50
there uh in those moments to be able to
10:53
get this thing overtime because that was
10:54
key just getting it to overtime I think
10:56
we all had this this
10:59
desperate huge desire to get a win at
11:03
home uh you know we know we can't afford
11:06
it uh we know that we need to protect
11:09
our home court we need to do everything
11:10
that we can to take care of business so
11:13
it was just it was it was it was a big
11:15
desire some some desperation that that
11:17
all kicked in you didn't put basketball
11:19
in that list campus is number one in
11:21
basketball yeah yeah yeah well let me
11:24
ask you this question at northw you
11:26
would attend I saw you out at a lot of
11:27
sports event other sporting events with
11:29
just regular students are you enjoying
11:31
the college experience at UNC yeah I am
11:34
I went to um couple of the soccer games
11:37
uh volleyball and women's basketball as
11:39
well I know you probably been asked
11:41
about this you talk about the the
11:43
5-second violation you guys forced and
11:45
then the play at the end where they
11:47
turned it over at the of Regulation and
11:49
your role in those yeah um I just wanted
11:51
to make an impact uh however I could and
11:54
that was um you know on the ball I was
11:56
just trying to uh read the impa's eyes
11:59
with you guys they obviously shot 1424
12:02
from three and you know it seemed like
12:04
the Closeouts weren I guess on time so
12:06
to speak I guess is that something you
12:08
were noticing as far as their ability to
12:10
I did notice that a little bit and we
12:12
had to uh pick that up in the second
12:14
half I think that's what led to us
12:16
winning what do you think allowed you
12:18
guys to change that I know RJ was saying
12:19
he kind of talked to you guys about just
12:21
the importance of every play uh what do
12:23
you think allowed what sank in for you
12:25
guys the second half over time I think
12:28
uh adding on to what he said I think um
12:30
intensity goes around with that and then
12:34
the game that you know Seth had he
12:35
obviously you know got back in that you
12:37
know starting five got the double double
12:38
he had been active you know his last
12:40
couple games you see out of him today
12:42
how much of the he give that that was
12:44
great like you said he was active on the
12:46
boards and um you know just causing
12:48
chaos on uh defense as well what was the
12:52
I guess the morale or the overall uh you
12:55
know energy this past week uh of games
12:57
you guys that obious dropped to
12:59
so I guess leading into today just what
13:01
were the practices like what was the the
13:03
mood um I think the mood was um we were
13:06
just ready to play our next game and um
13:09
you know just ready to um really buy
13:11
into the team and um you know just to
13:14
continue to have
13:16
fun so so down the stretch you and Ian
13:18
were switching offense for defense is
13:20
that how that was going yes and
13:24
uh how did you how how did you like that
13:27
that sort of in playay um I whatever
13:30
whatever the team is needed I feel like
13:32
um both Ian and I we can do that at a
13:34
high level what things have you improved
13:37
on since the beginning of the season
13:38
because somebody asked you it's you know
13:40
it's your freshman year so what things
13:41
have you improved on and what things do
13:42
you still need to improve on I think um
13:45
the main thing is my uh physicality
13:47
level and just um just being smart on
13:50
defense I think that's something I can
13:51
improve on you know staying down
