sh uh one thing that M was actually just
0:13
saying was that uh Jordan ship's going
0:15
to started getting more involved I know
0:17
he had the uh the 22 yard catch the
0:19
other day or I guess last week or
0:21
whatever um but I guess in that same
0:23
vein how is that starting to you know
0:25
play out as far as you know bringing him
0:27
a I know we've talked about him a lot it
0:29
feels like but um yeah just kind of
0:31
how's that going along as far as about
0:33
Jordan yeah yeah I think Jordan's shown
0:35
that he can uh make some plays when he
0:37
gets the opportunity I think you know
0:38
you get into a situation where you got
0:40
some older players um you know Nate and
0:43
those guys and Kobe that kind of played
0:45
in front of him that's the only thing
0:46
that's limited his uh reps but he's
0:48
improved I know early on in Fall Camp uh
0:51
he got banged up a little bit so he was
0:52
kind of slow starting the season but I
0:55
think you'll see him uh get more
0:56
involved as the season goes and um you
0:59
know he's shown that he made a couple
1:00
big catches I know yes U yesterday uh
1:03
couple weeks ago against Georgia Tech so
1:05
we really like him I think his future is
1:07
really bright here and you know um you
1:10
know it's one of those things too where
1:11
I don't think the moment's ever too big
1:13
for him he's pretty mature for a
1:14
freshman I think that's a huge part of
1:16
playing early is is you know having that
1:18
confidence and and um he's shown that he
1:21
does have that and uh excited about him
1:24
for
1:27
sure offensiv yeah I think
1:30
you know we were really you know first
1:32
of all getting healthy you know this
1:33
time of year you play um seven weeks and
1:36
you know till you have a bye so that's
1:38
it's been good from that standpoint we
1:40
did a lot of getting our young guys reps
1:41
that the Jordan ships of the world and
1:43
and those younger guys that have played
1:45
some or spot played us some um you know
1:48
with some injuries here and there but I
1:49
think for us you know we're still you
1:51
know trying to focus on the fundamental
1:53
things you know of being consistent and
1:55
protecting the ball which we've done a
1:56
better job of lately um you know no
2:00
self-inflicted wounds so to speak no no
2:02
pre-nap penalties none of that and and
2:05
really kind of just oldfashioned roll up
2:06
your sleeves go to work and have three
2:08
really good days of practice and that
2:10
was our that was our goal I think that
2:11
was the key and also get a head start on
2:13
Virginia I think you always want to do
2:15
that but you know and I think from a
2:17
coordinator standpoint you're trying to
2:18
look okay Virginia um this is kind of
2:21
who they are and what they look like and
2:23
what do we have that's um kind of our
2:25
base base offense that we can work on
2:27
this week blocking and tackling and
2:29
executing and that's kind of what we did
2:31
in those three days and then our older
2:32
guys some of those guys got a chance to
2:34
I think heal up a little bit and we took
2:36
some reps off those guys look at the
2:38
last three games am Marian aside from
2:40
that 71 yd run hasn't had many
2:43
explosives and I think there's 27 runs
2:46
of one yard or less I just asked Mack
2:48
about it he was talking about the the
2:49
injuries not banged up the line has been
2:51
and and you know Randy not being
2:54
available what would you attribute that
2:55
to the last few weeks and do you think
2:57
the open period with getting healthier
2:59
Maybe you're going to see something yeah
3:01
I think I think all of it contributes
3:02
probably I would say I would say that um
3:05
you know he's by far the guy that that
3:06
I'm sure that everybody when we play
3:08
they say hey we got to do whatever we do
3:09
to stop him which is I think allowed
3:11
jacobe to make some plays down the field
3:13
but I think too I think when you look at
3:16
different you know oine play is so um
3:19
you know they have to kind of get their
3:21
their Rhythm together right they have to
3:23
kind of play to beside each other and I
3:24
think some of that is probably when you
3:26
throw a couple young guys in there with
3:27
Aiden being banged up and so forth but
3:29
at the end of the day I think um you
3:31
know we've got to do a better job of of
3:33
of making sure that our first and second
3:35
down plays don't leave us second long
3:37
third long and I think that's what we
3:39
really tried to work on the past week um
3:41
you know he you om Marian's one of those
3:44
guys that that he's going to draw a lot
3:46
of attention so we got to figure out the
3:47
best way each week I think to take
3:49
advantage of that and that's helped us
3:50
open up some passes down the field for
3:52
sure play fakes and so forth but uh I
3:54
think getting that that continuity back
3:56
with our o line hopefully that's going
3:57
to help us we've seen the last two games
3:59
where how you can use Jobe that sense so
4:01
the quarterback draws and he falls
4:03
forward how much can can you use that
4:06
moving forward to maybe also help Mario
4:08
because they have to be worried more
4:09
just not one guy but yeah I think you're
4:10
right I think that that's a huge thing
4:12
when a quarterback has some Mobility uh
4:14
been spoiled around here with the last
4:15
two guys before him that both can make
4:17
plays with their feet and jacobe uh did
4:19
a nice job of that last couple weeks um
4:21
on some on some design stuff and then
4:23
some stuff that wasn't designed you know
4:24
when the pass protection or they cover
4:27
pass Pro breaks down he's done a nice
4:29
job and really what I like is that he's
4:30
not taking a lot of sacks he's throwing
4:32
the ball away when he should and he's
4:33
gotten down on the ground and tried to
4:35
avoid big hits as much as he can that's
4:36
what you worry about some but uh he's a
4:39
I think he's a lot better athlete than
4:40
people gave him credit for uh he's uh
4:43
you know he's he's a guy at this time of
4:45
year they're all banged up a little bit
4:47
and I'm sure he is but this this by week
4:49
couldn't come in a better time with jul
4:52
being out this week potentially longer
4:54
who do you see stepping up in sort of
4:56
the second tight end R behind Co yeah I
4:59
think I think it's a little bit by
5:00
committee I think this is a a big week
5:02
for Jake I think you know well obviously
5:05
he he's a guy that's older and has
5:07
played some um and he's played a little
5:09
here and there for us but I think I
5:11
think Jake brings some some confidence
5:13
and some stability in that room for sure
5:15
especially when we want to be in 12
5:17
Personnel or just to rest cop some I
5:18
think that's huge um I think Ryan's
5:21
another guy that that you know could
5:23
could fill in some too as a true
5:24
freshman um we know he's going to be
5:26
really really good player he's really
5:28
talented but he's Le reps have been
5:30
limited just because some older guys in
5:31
front but uh you know I think I think
5:34
those two guys will have to fill that
5:35
void in some capacity it's going to be
5:37
really hard Bryson's a fabulous player
5:39
and uh really brings a lot to the table
5:42
but I think we're going to have ways
5:43
maybe with some unique Personnel groups
5:45
to hopefully offset that some i' silver
5:48
lining to view this as sort of a preview
5:50
of next year when Bryson is potentially
5:52
off to the NFL right well maybe but
5:54
we're trying to win every game this year
5:55
so so uh I don't know about Silver
5:57
Lining anytime you lose one of the best
5:59
players in country in my mind that's
6:00
it's not a not a lot of not a not an
6:02
exciting thing but at the end of the day
6:05
I'm very confident in Jake very
6:06
confident Ryan I think those are some
6:08
opportunities now that they'll
6:10
get the very last of the game
6:13
yeah I'm sure you guys when did he get
6:16
inurance yeah it was early uh you know
6:19
Testament to him he's tough I mean he he
6:21
played uh basically from what I get
6:23
understand the whole game you know um
6:26
really with the injury and um so you
6:28
know a test how tough he is and how much
6:30
he wants to be on the field and uh you
6:33
know I think I think it's one of those
6:34
things that it's just going to take a
6:35
little time to
6:37
heal I don't no not
6:40
specifically yeah I don't I don't
6:42
believe that was it and and um I'm not
6:45
sure sure exactly what play it's been a
6:47
while
6:48
so you you feel like job's done a pretty
6:51
good job of not taking sacks but I mean
6:54
seems like he's taking a lot of shots
6:56
though when he's he hangs in there I
6:58
mean he doesn't lch from getting hit in
7:01
terms of hanging there to deliver the
7:02
ball I mean I would think these last
7:04
five games you want to try to keep him
7:06
cleaner than you can is that I mean is
7:08
that one of the big concerns with him is
7:09
that he's taking too much definitely I
7:11
don't want him to get hit ever but if
7:13
you look if you watch the game whatever
7:15
level they those guys are going to get
7:16
hit some I mean that's part of it but uh
7:18
we got to do our our job to limit how
7:20
many times and uh you know there's a lot
7:22
of things that go into that sometimes
7:24
the ball should have come out and it
7:25
didn't sometimes we get beat uh at a
7:27
certain spot whether it's running back
7:29
or line and and sometimes they they uh
7:32
fool fool us and bring more than we than
7:34
we thought they were bringing or
7:35
whatever the case may be and that's why
7:37
the quarterback it's so important for
7:38
him to be able to operate and change the
7:40
protections and and you know get them
7:42
slid the right way and all those
7:43
different things that go along with it
7:44
and he's dramatically improved in that
7:47
as as as much as he uh could because now
7:50
he's just played more so he's got more
7:51
reps and I think that go that's part of
7:53
The Growing Experience um you know when
7:55
you get young quarterbacks if you think
7:56
about the the fresh not the Freshman but
7:58
the rookies in the NFL this year Drake
8:00
being one of them I those are the things
8:02
that concern those guys at that level as
8:04
well do we really want to expose this
8:06
guy that early and you know he doesn't
8:08
have a lot of experience and it's the
8:09
same way in college I think uh when you
8:10
have young quarterbacks that's important
8:13
um and again you know um maybe the
8:15
common fan or whatever wants to blame
8:17
hey it's the old Line's fault that's not
8:18
always true and uh you know it takes the
8:22
whole unit working together that's I
8:23
think the beauty about football is um
8:26
it's never just it's a team game and uh
8:28
we all contribute to that and and uh so
8:30
hopefully that will improve um I think
8:32
there's times too that that we have to
8:34
throw the ball away understand the
8:35
play's over throw it away move on play
8:37
the next one sometimes those are the
8:38
best plays you can make hey we called a
8:40
certain play they we didn't get the look
8:42
that we thought we were getting so it's
8:44
it's not a good look so let's throw it
8:45
away and go play the next play and all
8:48
those things are learning experiences
8:49
for him just to follow on that are those
8:53
when you guys are going through the film
8:54
are those sort of the conversations I
8:56
I'm sure you're talking about everything
8:58
but like there are there moments that
9:00
you're pointing out hey you might not
9:02
you didn't have to take this shot that
9:03
you took you like actually pointing that
9:06
out every every year I mean last year
9:08
with Drake it was hey don't jump the guy
9:09
right run out of bounds uh slide
9:12
whatever I mean same conversations and
9:14
you know what's fun about these guys
9:15
they're smart guys and as soon as I mean
9:17
they'll watch the film before they meet
9:18
with me and I'll get to it and oh I
9:21
should have you know whatever so they
9:23
they understand but again understanding
9:25
drawing it on the board talking through
9:27
it and then doing it when the play snap
9:29
it's lot it's totally different thing
9:31
the speed of the game's fast and it's a
9:33
lot to process and uh again experience
9:35
is a huge factor and uh he's gaining
9:38
that experience for sure and I think
9:39
you've seen his growth if you really sit
9:41
down and and look and study you know
9:44
what he's done since he's been thrown
9:46
into this role here and become our
9:47
starter I think you've seen him grow in
9:49
that area for sure M was talking about
9:51
all the injuries that the offensive line
9:53
has had to deal with throughout this
9:55
early part of the Season plus with Coach
9:56
Clemens uh being out uh for a period of
9:59
time
10:00
does it feel like after the buy with a
10:02
lot of those guys getting healthy
10:03
blasing bfield that you sort of feel
10:07
like okay now like here we go like this
10:09
is what it's yeah I mean I think those
10:11
are things that come up in every season
10:12
and you know we got we got to handle
10:13
those things and figure ways to no
10:15
matter who's available and what what's
10:17
going on it's our job to figure out how
10:19
to how to move the ball and score points
10:20
and times we've done that times we
10:22
haven't so U but you know no excuses for
10:25
us um we are glad the bye came when it
10:27
did don't get me wrong because I think
10:29
think that'll help us uh get some guys
10:31
maybe more healthy but at the end of the
10:33
day um we got when the guys that are on
10:35
the field we got a lot of confidence in
10:36
them and uh we you know we we we
10:38
practice those guys and and anticipate
10:41
them playing well each and every week
10:42
and it's always good to have some guys
10:44
back and some more depth for sure but um
10:47
you know I think we got to figure ways
10:48
to to use the guys we have and I think
10:51
we'll be as healthy as we've been
10:52
obviously with the exception of Bryson
10:54
uh going into this Virginia game your in
10:58
your pass coach
11:03
you know I have um you know a little
11:06
little different scenario Philip lener
11:08
and I've coached him in high school was
11:09
a tight end plate that signed at Auburn
11:12
and U played at Auburn was a was a great
11:14
player at Auburn and uh very close to
11:17
him and his family he was dad was my
11:18
booster club president he's got three si
11:20
he had three sisters and they babysat my
11:22
kids so very close and uh lost him in
11:25
2014 in a in a car wreck so little
11:28
different
11:29
circumstance from from um tyes obviously
11:32
but yeah it's tough and um you know I
11:35
thought coach Coach Brown and Lonnie
11:37
both you know just handled themselves um
11:40
exceptionally well for that situation
11:42
and I know it's really hard I've had to
11:43
do that and uh anytime you do that it's
11:46
it's something that weighs on you for a
11:47
long time and uh you know young people
11:50
you losing young people early in their
11:51
life is is really sometimes hard to
11:53
understand and uh you know I know our
11:55
team is has been a tough week on those
11:57
guys um and and our and everybody in our
11:59
program but I do think um you know it's
12:02
something that that we can all learn
12:04
from from his example and Coach made
12:06
that point yesterday as well as Lonnie
12:08
and um I think he's had a huge impact on
12:10
on the Carolina
12:14
family Le your offense through you know
12:18
prep for E the rest of season you're
12:20
also leading a lot of these young folks
12:22
through processing this group maybe the
12:24
first time a lot of them have kind of
12:25
gone through something like this just
12:27
Coach Brown was talking about that
12:30
yeah I mean that's really what we're
12:31
here for to help them grow as people and
12:33
and and young adults and um become um
12:36
you know become you know successful in
12:39
life emotionally um career-wise and all
12:42
those things and I think um that's not
12:44
been lost here you know uh even since I
12:46
arrived two years ago that's been our
12:49
Focus coach Brown's focus is to um to
12:51
really be a great positive influence on
12:53
these young people in their lives and
12:55
that's what we've really always strived
12:57
to do and have done and um so I think I
13:00
think some people handle things
13:02
differently uh from the standpoint of
13:03
how they process things we all do and
13:06
you have to respect that and you know I
13:08
think the big thing for us as coaches
13:10
just be there for our players in
13:11
whatever capacity they they want us to
13:14
be there and uh help them help them
13:16
understand it because uh this is real
13:17
life and uh you know football games are
13:20
are always going to be here and we want
13:22
to win every game we play but I think
13:23
preparing them for life is kind of the
13:25
number one thing we're here for what are
13:26
some of the primary challenges that UVA
13:28
presents yeah I think they're very coach
13:31
very well um very familiar they're very
13:33
sound in what they do defensively um you
13:36
know you know they have um really a
13:38
really fantastic linebacker um and
13:41
really two of them and couple really
13:43
good D linemen and it's not going to be
13:44
a matter of of um of hey you know they
13:48
they're giving you a bunch of crazy
13:49
looks I don't think and they could but
13:51
at the end of the day it's going to be
13:52
about us executing we've said that and
13:54
really being consistent and that's
13:55
something we struggle with some you know
13:57
is being consistent and playing four
13:58
quarters we made some strides I thought
14:00
last last two weeks ago last time we
14:02
played but um at the end of the day this
14:04
is a good football team they're very
14:06
well coached um their their record is I
14:08
think four and three now and so they
14:10
they've won they've won some games and
14:11
and done a nice job and so for us I
14:14
think it's going to come down to taking
14:15
care of the football and really you know
14:17
no self-inflicted we can't have you know
14:19
false starts and penalties and so forth
14:21
and uh take advantage of every
14:22
opportunity we get in the red zone as as
14:25
you guys have gotten more and more into
14:27
the league do you find that that I
14:30
understand the size of your tackles your
14:31
offensive tackles is you know great Tex
14:34
book type size but do you think teams
14:36
have been able to use that or exploit
14:39
that in terms of like some of the quick
14:41
the quickness stuff off the edges like
14:43
it seems like those guys yeah maybe have
14:45
gotten confused at sometimes no I don't
14:48
think so I think it depends on you know
14:51
you know what what position the player
14:52
was outside or whatever because it's all
14:55
um coordinated right who blocks who and
14:57
so forth but no I think think our guys
14:59
are just continuing to grow I think
15:01
those two tackles we have they're
15:02
they're big guys and long and so forth
15:04
but at the end of the day they are young
15:05
players and they're they're trying to
15:07
figure it out as we go and making
15:09
progress I think uh you look at Howard I
15:11
thought he played one of his best games
15:12
uh two weeks ago against Georgia Tech
15:14
the last two actually he's improved
15:16
tremendously uh there's always a you
15:18
know play or two he'd like to have back
15:19
but I like his progress so I mean he's a
15:21
young sophomore as well as Trey and both
15:23
those guys are are improving each and
15:25
every
15:26
week all right let me ask about far he
15:29
been help to finally give you what you
15:32
wanted to do yeah I think so I think so
15:34
I mean I think I think um bullets DAV
15:36
onos has done a really nice job filling
15:38
in spots but you do have an older guy
15:40
there that's played some that you got
15:42
probably a little confidence that he
15:44
he's been in some games he he
15:45
understands and getting him back I think
15:47
is huge I know he was um uh you know
15:50
back last time we played and and um you
15:53
know was kind of just getting back but
15:54
we he's had a good week and hopefully
15:56
hopefully we'll see him U get some
15:58
opportunities
15:59
all right you have a good day than you
