Thanks for being here.
0:01
Yeah.
0:02
All right. Uh we'll get rolling. Uh got
0:05
plenty of questions on here. Uh we'll
0:07
give the first question to Steve Croner.
0:09
Go ahead, Steve.
0:11
Yeah, Hubert. Um obviously the two main
0:14
attraction freshman in the ACC maybe in
0:18
the country have been your guy Caleb
0:19
Wilson and Cameron Boozer at uh Duke.
0:23
But where does IO Corey fit into the uh
0:26
that freshman landscape? Well, I mean,
0:29
he's obviously extremely gifted. Um, you
0:33
know, his ability. I I really, you know,
0:35
I've been blown away by, you know, his
0:38
impactfulness on both ends of the floor.
0:40
Defensively, he he um does a really good
0:44
job of guarding the ball, competes, gets
0:46
steals, deflections on the ball. Um, so
0:50
he's a really good uh defensive player
0:52
as well, but offensively just, you know,
0:55
he can shoot from three.
0:58
um he can shoot from three off the catch
1:00
or the dribble. Um his ability to go
1:03
either direction, get into the lane. The
1:06
way that he finishes floaters around the
1:08
basket with either hand is elite and he
1:11
gets to the free throw line. He's a good
1:12
free throw shooter and you know they
1:14
give him the ball a lot and all their
1:16
actions uh for the most part run through
1:19
him and um he has stepped up and
1:21
delivered. He's he's he's been fun to
1:24
watch and hopefully he's not fun to
1:26
watch on Wednesday for us.
1:29
Yeah. Thank you, sir. Uh Rod Baxley, go
1:33
ahead, sir.
1:34
Hey, Hubert. Um how do you continue to
1:37
try to help Luca find his footing in
1:40
consistency and and getting to what he's
1:42
capable of providing for your guys?
1:45
Yeah, I mean, Luca is um obviously
1:48
gifted and needed for our team to be the
1:51
best that they can be, you know. Um he's
1:53
a big guard. He's, you know, offensively
1:56
can handle, can distribute. Uh he can
2:00
make plays for himself and make plays
2:02
for his teammates. And, you know, in
2:04
regards to the rhythm, I I'm a big
2:07
believer in like
2:10
rhythm doesn't mean just your shot. I
2:13
mean, there's just so many impactful
2:15
ways that you can make an impact out
2:18
there on the floor. It's not your in
2:20
rhythm, out of rhythm. Um, in terms of
2:24
shooting the basketball, you know, and,
2:27
um, he can defend, he can rebound. Um, I
2:30
talked about his passing ability and,
2:33
you know, just moving forward like we
2:35
need his scoring, we need his ability to
2:38
playmake because he does it at an elite
2:41
level.
2:43
Thanks, Hubert.
2:46
Uh, Andrew Jones, go ahead.
2:49
Hey, Hubert. I asked I asked you the
2:51
other day about what Seth said about the
2:53
switching and last week Andy Enfield
2:55
said after the game that they attacked
2:57
when you guys switched. Um, now that
2:58
you've gone back and looked at the film,
3:00
are there some things that maybe you
3:01
guys aren't doing as well with the
3:03
switching the last two games as you did
3:05
previously, or what might be some of the
3:07
things that opponents are exploiting,
3:09
especially from your perimeter defense?
3:12
Yeah, I mean I think defensively I you
3:15
know you're focusing on you know the
3:18
times that we do switch I um I think
3:22
it's just coming from a number of
3:24
different areas over the last couple of
3:26
games. I think, you know, the
3:27
communication
3:29
um I think our transition defense,
3:33
I think our our on ball defense the last
3:37
couple games have not been good. Whether
3:40
it's one-on-one on a perimeter, a post,
3:42
whether it's a closeout situation, I
3:44
talked about transition. Um that has
3:47
nothing to do about switching. we we
3:49
haven't done um as good a job the last
3:53
couple games boxing out, limiting teams
3:55
to one shot every possession. Um
4:00
and so I think there's a number of
4:02
different things. I think it would I I
4:05
don't think it would be good to just to
4:07
focus on one aspect of us defensively. I
4:10
think overall there's a number of
4:12
different areas. for whatever reason the
4:15
last couple of games haven't been the
4:17
way that it's been um the prior 14
4:21
games.
4:22
To follow up on that very quickly, is
4:23
there a trigger point for that? Is there
4:25
something that the first line of defense
4:26
that breaks down then it kind of leads
4:28
to some of the other breakdowns that you
4:30
just outlined? Yeah, I mean, um, you
4:33
know, and and and those are things that
4:35
that, um, I've thought about and things
4:38
that we're going to practice today in
4:39
the next couple of days to, um, to try
4:42
to put us in a better position to to get
4:45
stops, to put us in a better position,
4:48
to do a better job against opposing
4:51
teams,
4:53
um, go to better players. And um but
4:58
I've always told the team that the ball
5:00
is always the problem. If you can
5:02
control the ball, everything else will
5:03
take care of itself. In the last two
5:05
games, like our ball pressure, our
5:08
ability to guard the ball, as I said
5:11
before, whether it's one-on-one in a
5:13
post perimeter, um ball screen action,
5:16
out of bounds underneath, closeouts,
5:19
that hasn't been good and that has to
5:21
get better and it has to get better by
5:23
Wednesday.
5:24
Thank you. Appreciate it. Yep.
5:27
Uh Luca Massie, go ahead, sir.
5:29
Hey, coach, what do you think are some
5:30
underrated challenges of playing
5:32
Stanford on the road, whether it's the
5:34
travel, the roster, or the system they
5:36
play?
5:37
Yeah, I mean, I the the challenge is
5:39
playing against a good, you know,
5:40
Stanford team on Wednesday. I think, you
5:43
know, obviously, yes, going across the
5:45
country in the middle of the season in
5:47
conference season is not something
5:49
that's normal, but it's something that's
5:51
been done before. whether we have
5:54
traveled across the country to go play
5:56
BYU or just last week went to go play
5:59
Dallas uh go play SMU in Dallas and and
6:02
these guys have you know through AAU and
6:06
high school they've played all over the
6:08
place and adjusting the time zone for 18
6:12
19 year old kid I think is is overrated
6:14
you know the the challenge is playing
6:16
against a good Stanford team that's the
6:18
challenge um irregardless of what times
6:22
zone we're in. Um the challenge is going
6:25
to be um competing against Stanford.
6:28
Thanks, Coach. Michael Co. Go ahead,
6:31
sir.
6:32
Hey there, Hubert. Seems like we've uh
6:34
we've been seeing more playing time off
6:36
the bench for for Jaden lately. Um
6:39
what is it that he brings to you guys
6:42
just day in and day out that
6:44
had that has led to you rewarding him
6:46
with more minutes? Well, I mean,
6:50
I I wasn't re Oh well, you could say
6:52
rewarding, but I I he rewarded himself
6:56
with those minutes by his play. Um, he
6:59
was playing well out there. He's playing
7:01
well defensively. He's uh he's a
7:03
physical, strong defender that it's hard
7:06
to move him off his spot. He's a solid
7:09
and fundamentally sound. And then on the
7:11
offensive end, when he's open, he
7:12
shoots. When he's not, he he moves it.
7:15
And he was in the right spots. and he
7:17
looked comfortable, he looked confident
7:19
out there. And you know, without him and
7:22
without his play on Saturday, um I'm not
7:25
sure we beat Wake Forest. And so, um
7:28
that's why you have depth. That's why
7:30
you have more than five guys on the team
7:33
because on any given day, other guys can
7:36
step up. And I think that's a really
7:39
good thing about this team that we can
7:40
have a guy like Jaden Young who
7:45
for the first time all year got these
7:48
type of minutes. His number was called
7:50
and he stepped up and he was able to
7:52
produce.
7:54
Thanks Hubert.
7:54
No no no Weissoff. Go ahead.
7:57
Hey Hubert. You said on Friday that
8:00
Caleb and Henry can get you into the
8:01
offense as needed. When Caleb isn't
8:04
getting, I guess, maybe a ton of shot
8:05
attempts in a half or in a game. Have
8:07
you considered using him in that way to
8:09
get you into the offense to sort of get
8:10
him more involved doing that?
8:12
Well, I mean, in in terms of involved,
8:15
what do you mean by that? Cuz I mean, I
8:18
think in the second half he had two
8:19
shots, but he was involved. He got to
8:22
the free throw line, he had assists. Um,
8:24
he drew fouls.
8:27
um
8:29
he was he was very involved into the
8:31
offense. I I think it would be um
8:35
negligent to to say someone is involved
8:39
and not involved based on based on shot
8:42
attempts. And also,
8:44
you know, Henry and Caleb are getting a
8:47
lot of attention. And so anywhere
8:50
um in their scoring areas, they're
8:53
getting two to three guys on them at
8:55
every time. And the really good thing
8:56
about both of those guys is they're
8:58
willing and and really good passers.
9:01
Squeeze one last question in for Shelby
9:03
Swanson.
9:05
Yeah, thanks again for taking the time.
9:06
Um, just curious. I mean, again, you've
9:08
gotten a lot of questions just about the
9:10
the travel um involved. Seems like more
9:13
of um I guess your concern is just the
9:16
Stanford team and the challenges they
9:18
pose. What are some of the unique
9:19
challenges that this team poses that
9:21
maybe you have stood out so far with
9:22
Scout? Well, I mean, obviously they've
9:24
got a big- time score, one of the
9:27
better, you know, scorers um in the
9:31
country and um they play extremely well
9:34
at home. Um they play hard. They're very
9:37
physical. They play hard. Um they're
9:40
always in the right spots. They've got
9:42
guys that can get hot from three, but
9:44
also finish around the basket.
9:47
Defensively, their pressure on the ball
9:49
is real and that's how they cause a lot
9:51
of steals and deflections and that's
9:55
something that's going to be huge for us
9:56
for us to for the most part we've done a
9:59
really good job this year taking care of
10:01
the basketball as a you know outside of
10:04
you know the 14 turnovers we had against
10:05
Wake Forest but um taking care of the
10:08
basketball is going to be huge for us
10:11
defensively giving them one shot every
10:13
possession and also they do a really
10:15
good job of getting to the free throw
10:16
line and making their free throws. And
10:18
so those are things that we're talking
10:20
about and addressing before practice
10:22
today before we head up to uh California
10:24
a little bit later today.
10:27
Hubert, thank you for the time today. We
10:29
appreciate it. Safe travels today.
10:30
All right. Thanks a
