RESIDENTS GATHERING IN STREETS AFTER EARTHQUAKE LA GUAIRA, VENEZUELA - JUNE 24: Two powerful earthquakes measuring 7.5 and 7.2 struck Venezuela 39 seconds apart on Wednesday, June 24, causing widespread damage and prompting large-scale emergency response efforts, according to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS). USGS said the first earthquake struck 23 kilometers southeast of Yumare in Yaracuy state at a depth of 10 kilometers, followed by a second 7.2 magnitude quake centered 24 kilometers northeast of San Felipe at a depth of 21.9 kilometers. The agency later revised its initial magnitude estimate of 7.1 after further analysis. Venezuelan media reported collapsed and damaged buildings in several areas, while communication outages in some cities hampered efforts to assess the full extent of casualties and damage. In Chacao municipality, where two residential buildings collapsed, Mayor Gustavo Duque Saez said 21 people had been rescued alive as emergency crews continued searching for survivors. Venezuelan media reported unconfirmed fatalities, but authorities had not yet released an official death toll. Interior Minister Diosdado Cabello said the earthquakes were felt across several states, including Caracas, and urged residents to remain outside buildings because of the risk of aftershocks.
