Tensions rose outside the arena as protesters confronted supporters, with a flag being ripped apart during the demonstrations. New York City Comptroller Brad Lander was also confronted by protesters outside the venue. Bhagwat is the chief of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), a prominent Hindu nationalist organization, which gave birth to the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party.
