Located adjacent to the Pentagon, the memorial commemorates the victims of the attacks. The coordinated attacks, carried out by 19 al-Qaeda hijackers using four passenger planes, killed 2,977 people at the World Trade Center, the Pentagon and near Shanksville, Pennsylvania. The Sept. 11 attacks became the deadliest terrorist attack on US soil and led to major changes in US security and foreign policy.
