Bakersfield, United States - June 02, 2026 06/02/2026 12:00 am GMT-0700 BAKERSFIELD, Calif. – A hostage situation is unfolding at a Chase Bank near 17th Street and Chester Avenue after a man reportedly entered the bank claiming to have an explosive device strapped to his chest. The incident began at 1:01 p.m. when calls came in reporting that a suspect had entered the bank with what was described as a bomb attached to his body and a detonator in his hand. Initial reports indicated the device was equipped with a dead-man switch. Multiple people were able to flee the bank, but several hostages reportedly remained inside. The suspect is reportedly demanding to speak with Federal Bureau of Investigation negotiators regarding a pending case. According to initial unconfirmed information gathered at the scene, he told authorities he does not trust the Bakersfield Police Department or the Kern County Sheriff’s Office. Reports from the scene also indicated that wires were wrapped around the ankles of at least one hostage inside the bank. The Federal Bureau of Investigation arrived on scene from Los Angeles to negotiate with the suspect. The Bakersfield Police Department and U.S. Marshals are also on scene. Law enforcement agencies remain on scene as the situation continues to develop.
