Coningsby, United Kingdom - April 07, 2026 A 90-year-old Spitfire takes flight as part of a commemorative tour marking nine decades since the first Spitfire prototype made its maiden flight. The specially painted two-seat aircraft replicating the original K5054 departed from Southampton International Airport, the same site where Captain Joseph “Mutt” Summers piloted the first Spitfire prototype on March 5, 1936. The aircraft was escorted to RAF Coningsby by a Dakota and Spitfire AB910 belonging to the Royal Air Force’s Battle of Britain Memorial Flight. Two F-35 Lightning II aircraft also joined the formation near RAF Marham. The flight marked the first of nine planned as part of the Spitfire90 tour, celebrating 90 years since the Supermarine Spitfire’s maiden flight.
