The drill formed part of the annual 10-day Han-Kuang military exercises, which rely on unscripted scenarios to test the island's combat readiness and infrastructure defense in the event of an invasion by China. The military exercises come as Beijing continues to expand its military presence across the Taiwan Strait and surrounding regional waters. Taiwan's annual Han Kuang military exercises began on Wednesday with nationwide mobilization, local media reported. The military deployed navy missile launchers, army tanks, helicopters, mortar teams, and civilian vehicles requisitioned for military use on the first day of the drills, according to a report by Focus Taiwan. Held annually since 1984, the Han Kuang exercises are Taiwan's largest war games and are designed to test the island's combat readiness "in the event of a possible Chinese invasion," the report said. The drills are conducted in two phases. This year's tabletop exercises were held on April 11-24, while the live-fire phase will continue through Aug. 14. Defense officials also said Wednesday that they aim to deploy key systems by the end of 2027 to integrate counter-drone capabilities across the armed forces and improve coordination between military and civilian counter-drone operations.
