SWEDISH ACTIVIST, SIGYN MEDER, SPEAKING TO REPORTER (Swedish) STOCKHOLM, SWEDEN - MAY 23: Hundreds of demonstrators gathered in Stockholm’s Odenplan Square on Saturday, May 23, to protest Israel’s recent interception of the Global Sumud Flotilla, which had been attempting to deliver humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip. The protest, organized by a coalition of Swedish civil society groups, called for an immediate end to Israeli military actions in Gaza and strongly condemned the treatment of international activists detained during the maritime mission. Swedish activist Sigyn Meder said those gathered were deeply concerned over emerging testimonies from flotilla members recently released from Israeli detention. Released activists have brought forward allegations of mistreatment and physical abuse after their aid convoy was intercepted by Israeli forces in international waters earlier in the week. Meder also criticized what demonstrators described as Western silence regarding Israeli actions in Gaza and the treatment of humanitarian activists. Holding Palestinian flags and banners demanding justice, participants highlighted the worsening humanitarian crisis across the region as they marched through central Stockholm. Israeli forces attacked the aid flotilla in international waters on Monday and detained all activists on board. The flotilla, carrying 428 people from 44 countries, departed Thursday from the Turkish district of Marmaris in an attempt to break the illegal Israeli blockade on Gaza imposed since 2007.
