VARIOUS OF DRONE SHOTS OF CONSTRUCTION OF "BLACK WALL" ON US-MEXICO BORDER CIUDAD JUAREZ, MEXICO - MAY 14, 2026: Construction of the new “black wall,” being built under an order issued by U.S. President Donald Trump as part of efforts to strengthen security along the U.S.-Mexico border, is ongoing. According to reports, the wall’s black color was selected to increase the temperature of its metal surface under sunlight, making it more difficult for migrants to climb. “That is specifically at the request of the president, who understands that in the hot temperatures down here, when something is painted black, it gets even warmer, and it will make it even harder for people to climb,” Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem said last year in August. The secretary added that technological equipment, including cameras and sensors, will also be installed along the border barriers to reinforce security. According to a Washington Post report in May this year, the rapid expansion of the US-Mexico border wall has damaged a rare Native American archaeological site in Arizona. The administration is fast-tracking a $46.5 billion border wall expansion, funded by the One Big Beautiful Bill, building about three miles per week and adding new or additional barriers across Texas, California, Arizona and New Mexico. The construction is bypassing environmental and legal protections, raising concerns among advocates, park officials and Native American communities, according to the report.
