India: Sugarcane truck becomes target for hungry elephants as herd blocks road, leaving driver terrified.

A herd of wild elephants surrounded a sugarcane truck on the road and began pulling cane from its load. Motorists stopped nearby and captured the unusual encounter on their mobile phones. The incident took place on the Asanur road near Talavadi, in Erode district, in southern India's Tamil Nadu, on August 24. Visuals show that a herd of wild elephants including calves surrounded a sugarcane-loaded truck on a forested road. The elephants closely inspected the vehicle and showed interest in its sugarcane cargo while remaining near the roadside. According to reports, Asanur forest lies within Sathyamangalam Tiger Reserve and has a significant wild elephant population. During sugarcane season elephants often wait near roads for trucks carrying cane. They reportedly stop vehicles and feed on their loads. On Monday, a herd spotted a sugarcane truck near Karapallam checkpost. The elephants came out from roadside bushes and surrounded the vehicle. The frightened driver stopped and stayed inside while elephants pulled sugarcane from the truck using their trunks. Vehicles halted on both sides and some motorists recorded the scene.
