Salento, Colombia - August 11, 2026 More than 100 people are now reported dead following the severe earthquake in western Colombia. The figure has been revised upwards. President Abelardo de la Espriella has since spoken of 111 dead and 87 injured. Officials fear the number could still rise. Authorities confirm that people may still be trapped under buildings that collapsed. A national state of emergency has been declared, and the president has announced that all resources will be mobilised to rescue those still missing. Colombia's geological service calls it the strongest earthquake in a decade. The US Geological Survey puts the quake at magnitude 7.4, at a depth of 107km. It was felt as far as neighbouring Ecuador.
