Police said rioters threw torches and heavy fireworks as 15 asylum seekers arrived at the former town hall in Loosdrecht. Riot police were forced to intervene when the crowd obstructed firefighters attempting to extinguish blazes in the shrubs surrounding the facility. While no injuries were reported among the staff or asylum seekers inside. “Utterly scandalous how a group of rioters tonight in Loosdrecht resorted to violence, set fires, and spread fear among people,” said Dutch Prime Minister Rob Jetten. “You’re always allowed to voice your concerns. But using violence is never acceptable.” The facility has been the site of growing tension in recent days. Authorities had already scaled back the original plan to house 110 people to a maximum of 70 following previous demonstrations. The arrival of the group had also been delayed from a planned May 6 start date due to security concerns and limited police availability during a local festival.
