Hey everybody, I'm Christian Bryant. I hope your morning's off to a good start
0:45
We are glad you're here. Let's get right into it. Chinese President Xi Jinping is wrapping up his visit to Washington today
0:50
after a day of high-stakes talks with President Trump. Trump rolled out the red carpet for Xi again last night, literally, hosting a state dinner to mark the Chinese leader's first visit to Washington in more than a decade
1:04
And for all the tensions between the U.S. and China, Xi spent much of the visit talking about where the two countries can work together
1:11
He said China's push for what he calls the Great Rejuvenation and Trump's promise to make America great again can go hand in hand
1:19
But Xi also warned against what's known as the Thucydides Trap, the idea that a rising power challenging an established one can ultimately lead to war
1:29
Xi's point, the U.S. and China don't have to end up there
1:33
He made a similar argument when the two leaders met in Beijing back in May
1:37
Meanwhile, Trump kept things friendly. As the leaders of our two nations, President Xi and I both understand that we represent different systems
1:47
but the ties between our people endure, and we've never gotten along better
1:53
Since the first trade ships from New York left the harbor to arrive on the banks of the Pearl River
2:01
Americans and Chinese have always exchanged goods, knowledge, customs, and ideas. This has been the foundation of commerce and mutual respect between our countries
2:11
and together we can continue to build a relationship that promotes prosperity and security for future generations
2:20
Behind all that diplomacy, though, there are still some big disagreements. The two leaders talked trade artificial intelligence and Taiwan all areas where the U and China remain deeply at odds Xi said the two sides reached quote common understanding on many issues
2:37
Today, Xi and his wife are scheduled to join the President and First Lady for a private tea, then tour the National Archives before heading home to China
2:45
The people building AI are warning it may be moving too fast
2:49
President Trump isn't buying it. Now, they're about to get in a room together
2:53
Trump and House Speaker Mike Johnson are set to meet with some of the biggest names in AI next week
2:58
The meeting is set for Tuesday at the White House, according to multiple reports
3:02
We don't know yet which tech CEOs will be there, but some of the industry's biggest names were already at the White House for last night's state dinner with President Xi, including OpenAI's Sam Altman and Meta's Mark Zuckerberg
3:15
And this comes as the pressure on Washington to put some guardrails around AI keeps growing
3:20
Some of the people building the most powerful AI models are now warning about catastrophic risks if development moves too fast
3:28
Johnson's solution? Get Trump and the AI CEOs to quote, go in a big room, close the door, and sort this out
3:35
Trump, though, has repeatedly dismissed those warnings, calling fears about AI destroying humanity a hoax
3:41
His concern has been different. Slow down too much, and the U.S. risks losing the AI race to China
3:47
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu used part of his UN speech Thursday to go after someone much closer to home, New York City Mayor Zoran Mamdani
3:57
Netanyahu accused Mamdani of anti-Semitism and said Jewish New Yorkers have told him they no longer feel safe in the city
4:04
Shame on you. Shame on you for distorting the facts. Shame on you for inverting victim and aggressor. Shame on you for spitting in the face of truth
4:16
Mr. Mamdani, since you were elected mayor of this city, many Jews no longer feel safe in New York
4:26
They talk to me. They tell me. This isn't the city we remember. It changed so quickly
4:32
Mamdani wasn't there, and delegates from dozens of countries walked out before Netanyahu spoke
4:38
The mayor responded in a statement saying, quote, Yet no lie can change the fact that he remains the subject of an international criminal court arrest warrant
4:47
alleging war crimes and crimes against humanity. Netanyahu denies those charges. Shortly before the speech Mamdani posted this video no words just the mayor planting an olive tree at Gracie Mansion and sharing a meal with Palestinian families from Gaza His caption
5:04
May peace be our future. These two have been going at each other for months
5:09
Mamdani has called Netanyahu a war criminal and urged the federal government to arrest him
5:14
In this video posted earlier this week, Netanyahu accused Mamdani of supporting Hamas
5:18
and inciting riots against Jewish New Yorkers. Mamdani has condemned Hamas as a terrorist organization
5:25
and according to the New York Times, there have been no riots targeting Jewish New Yorkers since he took office
5:31
And Mamdani is now showing up in Israeli politics. Netanyahu is running for re-election next month
5:36
His Likud party has put Mamdani's face on campaign billboards in Israel
5:41
right there alongside the leaders of Iran, Turkey, and Hezbollah. Netanyahu also posted this AI-generated campaign video earlier this month, imagining Mamdani and other Netanyahu opponents celebrating his defeat
5:55
One of the people shot during the 2024 assassination attempt on President Trump has died
6:01
James Copenhaver was 76. House Republicans shared this photo of Copenhaver, who died Wednesday at a Pittsburgh hospital surrounded by his family
6:10
Copenhaver was sitting in the bleachers at Trump's rally in Butler, Pennsylvania
6:14
when a gunman opened fire. He was shot in the arm and abdomen and left with lingering injuries
6:21
Afterward, he walked with a cane. Trump was grazed in the ear. Two other people in the crowd
6:26
were also shot. David Dutch survived. Corey Contemporatory was killed while shielding his
6:32
family from the gunfire. Right now, we don't know whether Copenhaver's death was related to
6:37
the wounds he suffered that day. The medical examiner says his cause and manner of death are
6:42
still pending. Copenhaver and his wife sued the federal government in June, accusing the Secret
6:48
Service and Department of Homeland Security of, quote, utterly failing to protect people at the
6:53
rally. Trump remembered Copenhaver Thursday as a true American patriot, calling his death a
6:59
tremendous loss. President Trump's massive arch near Arlington National Cemetery is one step closer
7:05
to reality this morning. The Federal Preservation Agency is ending its review with local officials
7:11
over the project's impact on nearby historic sites, and there's been plenty of pushback
7:17
The administration itself, through the National Park Service, says the 250-foot arch would have
7:22
adverse effects on the area Virginia officials say it would mar the landscape around Arlington National Cemetery They wanted the administration to consider changes including shrinking or moving it
7:34
And now the Federal Preservation Council, led by a Trump appointee, is pulling the plug on that process. In this letter, it says
7:42
we are hereby terminating consultation. That means the administration can move forward without
7:47
reaching an agreement with Virginia and D.C. officials. The council will send its final
7:52
comments to Interior Secretary Doug Burgum by October 7th. He'll then decide whether to move
7:58
forward. And remember, Trump recently added a new purpose for this thing. He says the arch will also
8:04
serve as a military complex. Finally this morning, if you haven't already, tumble out of bed and
8:10
stumble to the kitchen, then pour yourself a cup of you know what else. Because today is Dolly Parton
8:16
Day. Cities and states across the country are making it official, celebrating the late singer
8:21
on September 25th or 925. You see what they did there? 9 to 5. Nashville, where Parton spent most
8:29
of her life, has a full day of festivities planned, including tributes and special events
8:33
across the city. But the Dolly love goes well beyond Tennessee. New Orleans is holding a parade
8:39
in her honor, and in San Francisco, rhinestones and ruffles are encouraged for its Dolly Day
8:45
celebration. And if channeling Dolly's giving spirit is more your speed, her imagination library
8:50
is encouraging people to support local programs that put free books in the hands of kids. You can
8:56
find one near you at imaginationlibrary.com. And one more thing, we covered the Dolly Parton corn
9:02
