Trump cutting $1.8 billion in funding for Cornell, Northwestern

The Trump administration is freezing federal funding to two major universities

Cornell and Northwestern, as part of ongoing federal investigations. According to the White House, Cornell is facing a funding freeze of more than $1 billion

while Northwestern is seeing $790 million worth of funds frozen. The money is being held in connection to multiple Title VI investigations

a federal statute prohibiting discrimination in programs receiving government funds. This is in line with recent initiatives from the White House reining in university funding over DEI initiatives

Last month, the administration announced 45 universities were under investigation, demanding an end to racial preferences in school programs

Last week, Harvard University received a letter requesting an end to its DEI programs in order

to keep its $9 billion in federal funding, according to Harvard Student Newspaper

Brown University also was told last week its half a billion dollars in grant money was at risk over its DEI policies Princeton University and Columbia University have also seen recent funding losses over programs not align with the Trump administration policies

some cuts made over DEI, some over allegations of anti-Semitism on campuses

In response to the funding freeze, Cornell released a statement saying, we are actively seeking information from federal officials to learn more about the

basis for these decisions. And Northwestern released this statement, saying federal funds

that Northwestern receives drive innovative and life-saving research, like the recent development

by Northwestern researchers of the world's smallest pacemaker, and research fueling the

fight against Alzheimer's disease. This type of research is now at jeopardy. The university has

fully cooperated with investigations by both the Department of Education and Congress

Both universities say they first learned about the funds being frozen through media reports
