Trump administration sues New York City over sanctuary laws

The Department of Justice sued New York City Thursday over its sanctuary policies

It's part of a prolonged effort by the Trump administration to clamp down on communities

that protect undocumented immigrants from federal detainments. It's just days after the city of Louisville agreed to honor the U.S. Immigration and Customs

Enforcement detainers in exchange for the removal of its designation as a sanctuary city by the White

House. In a statement, Attorney General Pam Bondi accuses New York City of releasing thousands of

criminals and says if New York won't stand up for its citizens, we will. The Trump administration's

lawsuit comes after it warned Louisville it would sue the city if it didn't comply with 48-hour ICE

detainers. Democratic Mayor Eric Adams agreed to comply, citing failure to do so could cost the

city hundreds of millions of dollars in federal funds and subject it to mass ice raids. The DOJ

accuses New York sanctuary laws of being a barrier to federal immigration enforcement and argues they

violate the Constitution supremacy clause The lawsuit requests a district court find the city laws invalid in relation to the clause and to permanently ban the city from carrying out sanctuary policies

Mayor Eric Adams has offered to help the Trump administration remove violent immigrants from

New York City and to roll back some sanctuary policies. He released a statement saying he is

reviewing the complaint, and although he's asking the city council to re-examine some sanctuary

policies to ensure the city can work with the federal government, they have refused

The city council also responded to the suit, expressing support for the city's sanctuary

laws and argue they lead to safer communities as opposed to those that do not have such rules

Trump border czar Tom Homan has ramped up criticism of New York City, calling it the

biggest sanctuary city in the country in the wake of a shooting of a Customs and Border

Protection agent in the city. Police say the shooting doesn't appear to have targeted the agent because of their job

Rather, it was an attempted robbery. A person of interest has been detained in the case
