Republican Senator Mark Wayne Mullen told Meet the Press he believes children born in the U.S
0:05
should leave the country with their parents if the parents are in the country illegally
0:13
It was a hypothetical question from NBC anchor Kristen Welker when discussing a recent Supreme
0:19
Court ruling that will see an end to nationwide injunctions by federal judges. That ruling could
0:26
soon impact one of Trump's executive orders currently blocked by lower courts. Trump's policy
0:32
would deny U.S. citizenship to children born on American soil if the child's parents are in the
0:38
U.S. illegally or in the country lawfully but on a temporary basis. That could go into effect in
0:45
some states without injunctions in 30 days. Welker asked if he thinks babies should be
0:51
deported with their deported parents. Here's the exchange. Well, here's what we know
0:57
There's a whole industry that has stood up to bring people here in their last month of
1:03
pregnancy to have a child here. And they come here on a vacation visa and they have a child so their child will be able
1:10
to be U.S. citizens. It a whole industry You know it and I know it What we trying to do is end those that are gaming the system Should those babies be deported Senator with their parents Are you saying those babies should be deported with their parents
1:24
They should go where their parents are. Why wouldn't you send a child with their parents? I mean, why would you want to separate them
1:29
I wouldn't want to be separated from my kid. And no parent should want to be separated from their kids. So if their parents are deported, then the child should most definitely go with the parents
1:38
The root of the issue is the Supreme Court ruling. on a case where three lower courts from Massachusetts, Maryland, and Washington
1:46
all placed nationwide injunctions on Trump's order, freezing it while litigation plays out
1:53
But the Supreme Court ruled local courts shouldn't have broad authority to block policies nationwide
2:01
So these three states where lawsuits were filed, Trump's executive order will remain frozen
2:07
as well as in about 20 more states with similar injunctions. But in other states, the executive order could go into effect next month
2:17
meaning it would depend on the state the child is born in if they get automatic citizenship or not
