Manchester synagogue attack: car-ramming and stabbing leaves 2 dead

Investigators now say at least two people are dead and several others injured

after a violent car ramming and stabbing attack Thursday outside a synagogue in Manchester, England

Authorities say the suspected attacker was also shot and is believed to be dead

At least three people are listed in serious condition from the attack, with individuals hurt from the initial car ramming and subsequent stabbings

Authorities say the attack, which occurred on Yom Kippur, widely considered the most holy of Jewish holidays

is being investigated as an act of terror. British Prime Minister Keir Starmer expressed shock

and announced an increased police presence across the nation in response to the incident

The attack in Manchester this morning is absolutely shocking, and all of our thoughts are with those affected

I'm on my way back to London. When I arrive, I will chair an emergency COBRA meeting

I'm already able to say that additional police assets are being deployed to synagogues across the country

and we will do everything to keep our Jewish community safe. Investigators have yet to determine a motive, but the attack comes amid a rise in international anti-Semitism

and follows the slayings of two Israeli embassy staffers outside a museum in Washington, D.C. earlier this year

Thursday's attack is raising concerns about religiously motivated incidents in the U.K. and beyond
