James Gunn defends 'Superman' reboot as immigration themes critiqued

When you think of Superman, you might think faster than a speeding bullet

not immigration policy. But director James Gunn is not shying away from symbolism

saying his version of the Man of Steel centers on human kindness

and that has some critics sounding the alarm. Disney and other studios have really unwisely, for their own profit margin, if nothing else

decided to go down this kind of route, make everything about the same boring political

a pseudo-political point. The film has been dominating headlines, not just because we're days away from its release

I find Superman a little bit boring. But also because of Gunn's recent interview

calling Superman the story of America, an immigrant origin story making waves

amid a summer of sharp divides over U.S. immigration policy. We don't go to the movie theater to be lectured to

and to have somebody throw their ideology onto us. Fox News host called Gunn out on those comments

after he said in a week in interview with the Times of London, it about human kindness And obviously there will be jerks out there who are just not kind and will take it as offensive just because it is about kindness But screw them Gunn explained that while the politics

are open to interpretation, the story itself is universal. Superman was born on another planet

and sent to Earth as a refugee infant raised with American values. Gunn says an immigrant that came

from other places and populated the country. But for me, it is mostly a story that says basic

human kindness is a value and is something we have lost. The Superman reboot has faced a bit

of harsh criticism in early reviews, but more positives have started rolling in, with GQ

Magazine calling it one of the most distinct superhero films in a long time, with a tone that

feels honest and true to the spirit of Superman. And another, a terrific start for the new DC

Studios. Superman hits theaters July 11th, and another thing Gunn has made clear is this
