Democratic socialist scores Florida upset; Trump pauses 50% Canada tariffs

Socialists a statewide breakthrough. Plus, President Trump hits pause on Canada. The

50 percent tariffs are on hold and a pipeline left for dead could get new life and a new

pothole on the moon. The SpaceX rocket that slammed into the surface and the crater NASA

in Florida and one very unusual Senate race in Alaska. Starting with a stunner, progressive

state representative Angie Nixon easily defeated retired Army Lieutenant Colonel Alex Vindman

for Florida's Democratic Senate nomination. Vindman, who testified against Donald Trump during his first impeachment, outraised Nixon by more than 16 to 1. Nixon now faces Republican

Senator Ashley Moody in November. In the race for governor, Trump-backed Congressman Byron

Donalds won the Republican nomination. As your governor, we are going to doge all local

governments and all state agencies. There will be, there will be no sacred cows

To taxpayers deserve to know that their hard-earned dollars are being spent

efficiently, transparently, and with total integrity. Donald's will face former Republican Congressman David Jolly, who won the Democratic nomination

A Donald's win would make him Florida's first black governor. And another Florida incumbent is out

Republican Congressman Corey Mills lost his primary to former TV reporter Ryan Elijah

Mills has faced a series of controversies and investigations he denies wrongdoing

Now to Alaska, where Republican Senator Dan Sullivan and Democrat Mary Peltola have both advanced to November

setting up one of the more closely watched Senate races this fall. But there was another Dan Sullivan on this ballot

But retired teacher Daniel J. Sullivan Jr. fought to get his name on it, despite the incumbent and his Republican allies accusing him of running to confuse voters and help Peltola

Alaska sends the top four finishers to November ranked choice general election and the final two spots have not yet been called Less than two hours before new 50 tariffs were set to hit Canadian goods

President Trump put them on hold. Trump announced a three-day pause, saying the United States and Canada have reached a deal

but still need to finalize the details. He didn't say much about what's in it, except that the Keystone XL pipeline may be, in his words

awoken from the grave. The Office of the U.S. Trade Representative says

the deal will include, quote, comprehensive market access for all American goods

economic security commitments, and digital trade alignment. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney says

substantial progress has been made, but cautions there is still important work left to do

The 50% tariffs were set to hit about $20 billion worth of Canadian imports

including products ranging from hockey sticks and building materials to alcohol and clothing. So for now, those tariffs are on hold, but only

for three days, while the two sides try to get the deal across the finish line

Across the world, a major U.S.-South Korea military exercise will end six days early

after President Trump ordered the allies to scale it back. Alchi Freedom Shield began Monday and was supposed to run through August 27th

It will now end Friday. The Pentagon says some live training has been dropped, while other events will shift to simulations

but says American forces will still meet their training and readiness goals

South Korea's military says the change came at Washington's request, and it appears to have caught officials in Seoul off guard

South Korea's foreign minister told lawmakers that officials in both countries did not know about Trump's decision before he announced it

Trump ordered the reduction just hours before the exercise began, saying the drill sent a totally inappropriate and hostile signal to North Korea

He also pointed to his very good relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong-un

The annual exercise tests how U.S. and South Korean forces would respond together to a crisis on the Korean peninsula

On Wednesday, North Korean state media again criticized the training, saying Pyongyang would continue to exercise what it calls its right to self-defense

We are learning more about the final hours of actress Hayden Penetier's life

including who was with her when she was found unresponsive inside a South Carolina Airbnb apartment

The 36 star of Heroes in Nashville died Sunday in Greenville South Carolina Investigators have not yet released an official cause of death But a newly released police report is now filling in some of what happened that afternoon

Police say Penetier was staying temporarily at the apartment where she was found

Her boyfriend, Brian Hickerson, and his brother, Zach, were there. And police say they called 911

One of the responding officers wrote, I spoke with Zach Hickerson first. He advised this was his brother's girlfriend

The report also says Brian Hickerson showed police a bag of Penetier's medications

although the names of those medications were redacted. An autopsy found no signs of trauma that contributed to her death

Investigators are still waiting for additional test results before determining the official cause and manner

And now Penetier's estranged mother, Leslie Vogel, is speaking publicly about her daughter's death and about Hickerson. Vogel told NBC News

there is a lot of history in the past that Brian has enabled Hayden many times

and this is why her father and I had been concerned for a long time about him

Penetir had spoken openly about her struggles with addiction. She and Hickerson had a troubled

history when it came to domestic violence. He pleaded no contest in 2021 to two felony counts

of injuring a partner stemming from a 2020 arrest. This morning, the Trump administration is moving to lift decades-old protections

on more than 44 million acres of national forest, clearing the way for new roads, logging, and other development to be considered

The Forest Service is proposing to scrap the 2001 roadless rule, which for 25 years has restricted road building and logging in national forest areas

that don't currently have roads. More than 95% of the land affected is in 10 western states, including Alaska, California, Montana, Oregon, and Washington

Colorado and Idaho would not be affected because they have their own roadless rules

Agriculture Secretary Brooke Rollins says the rule has made it harder to clear overgrowth and other fire hazards

because forest managers cannot easily get into some of these areas. In a statement, she said, for too long, outdated restrictions have kept tens of millions of forested acres off limits to the very treatments that improve forest health and reduce wildfire risk to our communities

But some fire expert ecologists say more roads could actually increase the risk of fire by bringing more people into places that are now largely undisturbed The change would not automatically open all 44 million acres to logging Those decisions would be left to local forest managers

This is still a proposal. The Forest Service is taking public comment through September 21st at regulations.gov

Finally this morning, there's a brand new crater on the moon created by, get this

a SpaceX rocket that slammed into the lunar surface two weeks ago

The nearly 9,000-pound Falcon 9 upper stage had been drifting through space since launching in January of last year

Then, on August 5th, it hit the moon at about 5,400 miles an hour with the force of nearly three tons of TNT

And now we can see what it left behind. NASA's Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter captured these before and after images of the impact site

That new divot you see there, surrounded by bright and dark streaks of material

thrown out by the impact, is the new crater. And it's not exactly small

NASA measures it at about 60 feet across and just under 10 feet deep

The Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter has been circling the moon since 2009. And in this case, it gave scientists their most detailed look yet

at what happens when a piece of human-made space debris hits the lunar surface

I don't know about you, but I am very excited about our space exploration with the Artemis program and possibly landing on the moon again in 2028
