It's fall, and it's apple crisp season. This apple crisp is easy, delicious AND vegan! It can be made gluten-free, too, with just one substitution.

It's still hot here in Miami but technically it's fall so I thought I
0:05
would make one of my favorite fall desserts today which is apple crisp and
0:10
this version is vegan and you can also make it gluten-free if you need to
0:16
I'm playing around a little bit with the video and microphone settings so if
0:20
anything comes out a little bit weird I am so sorry but hopefully hopefully it's
0:26
better and not worse and as usual if you want to follow along with the recipe
0:31
it is on my website and I will put a link in the description below
0:35
Alright so let's get started. The first thing that we need to do is preheat the
0:40
oven to 375 degrees Fahrenheit and I'm also gonna spray some cast-iron pans
0:47
with cooking oil. I'm just using cast-iron pans because I want this look
0:52
I'm going to take some photos later but of course you can just use a regular
0:56
baking dish as well. So the next thing I'm gonna do is peel and chop my apples
1:00
You can use whatever apples you prefer but I usually like Granny Smith for
1:06
apple crisp because they have such a strong tart flavor. Some people also like
1:11
Honeycrisp, Orgella, Pink Lady, Fuji. These apples are all a little bit sweeter
1:18
than Granny Smith so for me it's a little too sweet when you add in the sugar and everything but it's up to you and your taste. Regardless of whatever
1:25
flavor of apples you use just make sure they're firm apples that are good for
1:29
baking otherwise they just might turn into mush in the oven. So anyway I am
1:36
just peeling them and cutting them into slices that are about 3 quarters of an
1:40
inch wide and then I am cutting those in half. At the end I want to end up with
1:46
seven cups of chopped apples or 800 grams. Alright so my apples are all
1:52
chopped now I am just going to take some lemons and squeeze them until I have two
1:58
tablespoons of lemon juice and I'm gonna add the lemon juice to my apples along
2:04
with a teaspoon of vanilla extract. I'll just toss everything to make sure that
2:09
the apples get evenly coated. So in a separate smaller bowl I'm going to add a
2:16
third of a cup of brown sugar along with two tablespoons of cornstarch, a teaspoon
2:23
of ground cinnamon, and a quarter teaspoon of salt. If you used sweet
2:29
apples instead of tart apples you might want to reduce the sugar to a quarter of
2:33
a cup but totally up to you. So I'm just gonna mix that up so it's nice and even
2:38
and then I will slowly add it to the apples. As I'm adding it I'm gonna stop
2:43
to mix up the apples so that I can get a nice even coating and then these will
2:49
just go right into my oiled pans or your baking dish whatever you're using
2:57
Alright so now I'm gonna start on my crumbly topping. I have cleaned up my
3:05
mixing bowl here and I am just going to add one cup of rolled oats, three
3:12
quarters of a cup of all-purpose flour, three quarters of a cup of brown sugar, a
3:18
teaspoon of cinnamon, and a quarter teaspoon of salt. If you're making the
3:23
gluten-free version you can use one cup of oat flour in place of the all-purpose
3:28
flour. Just check to make sure that you're using gluten-free oats and all
3:33
your other ingredients are gluten-free because sometimes there can be cross-contamination in the factory or whatever. So once those dry ingredients
3:42
are all mixed up I'm going to add three quarters of a cup of cold vegan butter. I
3:47
am using earth balance here and I have chopped it up into smaller pieces before
3:53
I added it in. So I'm gonna start out using a fork to cut the butter into the
3:59
dry ingredients until it's about half combined. Then I'm just going to take my
4:04
fingers and mix it up until it is crumbly. You don't want to use your hands
4:09
too much because you don't want the butter to get too soft. The key to a nice
4:14
crumbly texture is cold butter. If your butter is too soft your topping might
4:19
come out a little bit gritty and we don't want that. So now we're basically
4:24
done. I'm just gonna spread the topping all over the apples so it is nice and
4:28
even. And now this will go in the oven for about 35 to 45 minutes. Your timing
4:34
is gonna vary depending on the dish that you're using. So basically what you want
4:38
to look for is the topping to turn a little bit golden and the apples should
4:44
be fork tender. That's how you know they're ready. Once the apple crisp is
4:47
ready you just want to let it cool for about 15 minutes or so before serving it
4:54
Of course we all know apple crisp is not apple crisp without a scoop of vanilla
5:00
ice cream. I've got my vegan vanilla ice cream right here. I've got a little bit of
5:05
caramel sauce that I whipped up. If you want to make it yourself it's pretty
5:09
easy. Just mix up equal parts of coconut cream and brown sugar. You can add a
5:14
little cornstarch to thicken it up. A little salt if you'd like salted caramel
5:18
And that's it. Just heat it up for about five minutes over the stove and you're good
5:30
Mmm. I haven't had this in so long. It is so good
5:36
My mom taught me to finish my plate okay. Well that is all for this one but if you want more fall and Thanksgiving recipes
5:50
you're in luck because I've got several of them coming up in the next month or
5:55
so. So if you'd like to see those hit subscribe and I'll see you there. Bye
