And I even said that to Farzee on his show
0:02
I mean, it's amazing, dude. But like you said, Buddy Ryan, you know
0:08
I mean, that's what made me love football. Gang Green D. Same here
0:12
You know, question in your mouth. Buddy just brought that in-your-face attitude
0:18
And he didn't get a kiss. Just like you said about Andre Waters and just the way
0:25
Sing and going through all the routines and all that stuff. So anything that gets that machine going again, a coach is going to use
0:32
And I remember Greg Williams, the defensive coordinator of the Saints at the time, audio of him, I don't think it was video, but it was audio of him addressing the team went viral
0:43
And he was talking about cutting the head of the snake off. And I'm listening to that and I'm going, yeah, okay
0:50
Like, that sounds normal. But the minute that goes into mainstream media and people that are either casual fans or, you know, just someone who's not in the NFL at all, and they're like, wait a minute, hold on
1:02
This is a group of players. This is their boss, essentially. And he's telling them to hit a guy in the head and take him down and cut the head off of a snake and all that
1:11
And, like, that falls into the wrong hands. People take that out of context
1:16
That's how coaches address their team. So I have no doubt in my mind that other players or a coach might say, yeah, go ahead and go ahead and do that thing
1:23
And I remember also Roger Goodell talking about a mountain of evidence that he was sitting on about the, you know, saints and all that stuff and how damning it was
1:34
And I'm like, is he going to release that mountain of evidence? Because I still haven't seen it
1:38
And yet there's a horrible fallout from it for the saints. It just it didn't make any sense
1:43
It was when Roger Goodell was really trying to cut his teeth as the commissioner of the NFL
1:47
and really trying to make a name for himself and put his fingerprints on it after Paul Tadley-Abu
1:52
And to answer your question, yes, I do think that happens in NFL locker rooms
1:55
I don't know if it happens as much anymore because of the Bounty Bowl and how much attention it got
2:00
But, yeah, they try to find different ways to motivate these players through not a long season in terms of games played
2:06
but a long season in terms of six months, training camp and all that to try to get these players ready to play each and every week
2:11
Do any of the guys from the Buddy Ryan era have a comparison with this defense that Fangio has in your eyes
2:21
Like Jalen Carter, obviously, is the Jerome Brown. Yeah. Anybody stick to you that you can compare
2:34
Right now, the first guy you think of is Jalen Carter. because in my lifetime, fellas, there's been two comparisons
2:44
When I hear nobody complain or rebut a comparison, that's how you know somebody is that good
2:51
Like when Kawhi Leonard was going off against the Sixers in the postseason
2:55
whatever it was, six or seven years ago, whatever, people were like, you know, no one's played like this since Jordan
2:59
and nobody said, hey, hold your horses, that's Jordan. Everyone's like, yeah, that's pretty right
3:04
when everyone started comparing Jalen Carter to Jerome Brown, including players that played with him, Jerome Brown
3:13
and everyone's like, yeah, no, that's right. No one rebutted it. I was like, damn, all right, I guess he is that good
3:19
I didn't see Jerome Brown in his prime until I went back and watched him
3:24
but not in the moment experiencing it. But, yeah, Jalen Carter's the first guy that absolutely steps out in that regard
3:31
linebackers, as much as I like Zach Bond, I don't compare him to a
3:39
Seth Joyner. N'Kobe Dean, I don't. He kind of stands on his own
3:46
Fangio's defense is so different than Buddy Ryan. We're talking about a 4-6 defense
3:51
that was all about how do I crush the quarterback? How do I
3:56
send Mike Singletary up the middle? It's a different game. It's a much different style than what we're used to
4:05
But, yeah, if there was one guy I could take. Chauncey Gardner-Johnson, when he was here, you could certainly say throw him in there
4:10
I do – I think this – I know Buddy Ryan would find a spot for Sidney Brown
4:16
and that's not to glorify Sidney Brown. Oh, yeah. That's just the attitude of a Sidney Brown, the heat-seeking missile mentality of a Sidney Brown
4:24
That's what – yeah. Yeah, again, that's not to say that he would have been, you know
4:30
really anybody on that defense. But just the overall – I don't even want to name a name
4:35
because some people think I'm comparing. But just in terms of the overall mentality, that's what he brought to the table
4:40
That's what he would have brought to the table under Buddy Ryan. True. Yeah, I mean, you just look at, like, this modern-day NFL
4:46
and you look at all the stuff that Buddy did, you know
4:50
with the different games and all that stuff. I mean, I don't, you know, it's something that will never be duplicated
4:57
You know what I mean? Like, you'll never see it. You know what? You know what
5:02
Cooper to Gene. Cooper to Gene. I think Buddy Ryan, I mean, the nickel spot wasn't as, you know, used
5:12
But, I mean, I think if Buddy Ryan, I think if Buddy Ryan would have seen Cooper to Gene put Derrick Henry on his ass, I think that would
5:19
or excuse me, on his head, more like it. then I think that would have been like, oh, Buddy Ryan would have sat up in his chair
5:26
and went, all right, I can find a spot for this kid. Yeah, you touched on how the players love Buddy Ryan
5:33
Do you think that the 87 strike played a big role in that
5:37
Because I kind of do in the fact that Buddy really, really stuck up for those guys
5:43
So you mentioned the contract stuff. You know what I mean? Like I feel like that really brought the team together
5:49
Yeah, I mean, when you have a coach that can identify so well with your players having not played
5:56
like that's one of the things that really blew me away about Nick Sirianni is like, this locker room really loves that guy
6:01
But he wasn't a player. Like he gets the same kind of respect as Doug Peterson
6:06
And Doug Peterson was a quarterback in the league for so long. Like that's amazing. And played with some huge names
6:12
Buddy Ryan is that guy as well where he just knows how to command a team
6:17
I'm blanking on this. I think it was his father was a military guy. Buddy was a sergeant
6:24
Buddy was a sergeant. I knew there was a military. Yeah, he had the military
6:28
Buddy himself had the military background. So in the day and age in the NFL when you could be that drill sergeant
6:35
for lack of a better term, he understood that. I think he had a quality that a lot of great coaches have
6:42
if not all the great coaches have, where you realize that the guys you're coaching
6:47
are their own individual personalities. And it's not a matter of placating to them
6:52
It's a matter of finding a way to motivate them. Yeah. And if players know you have their back no matter what
6:59
then they'll love you forever. Yeah. They'll love you forever. And plus, let's not act like for a second that Buddy Ryan
7:08
didn't have a lovable personality. You know what I mean? Like, one of my favorite things of all time, two things
7:14
One was talking about the line from Jimmy Johnson about, yeah, I would have seen Buddy
7:21
Ryan but he got his what did he say fat rear end off the field too quick blah blah blah And Buddy Ryan response to that was I take a lot of offense to that I been on a diet I thought I was looking pretty good That a perfect line
7:36
I mean, who in Philadelphia, you tell me who in the 700 level
7:40
wouldn't want to tell their rich, snooty boss that he's just some guy in France
7:46
You know what I mean? Like he did with Raymond. If that's not Philly, I don't know what is
7:51
I don't know what is, man. Oh, yeah, he never called him. Randy Colton said the guy in the Seattle, the France
7:56
The guy that said the France. Man, that's what he's – that's what he would say in his interviews
8:05
Yeah. Yeah. Oh, man, it's classic, man. Big time. It does make you wonder, too, like if, you know, the guy, you know
8:13
the quote-unquote guy in France, like, you know, if he wasn't such a J-O making people pay for socks and stuff
8:19
and actually focus more on the team, maybe they would have, you know
8:23
they could have improved the offense a little more. And, you know, they might have won
8:29
Yeah. But if he paid for the Sox, he wouldn't afford a yacht in the south of France
8:32
or whatever the hell he was doing. Yeah, that's true. He would have re-signed Reggie White, too
8:38
Yeah. That hurt me, man, not signing Reggie. Like, how can you sign the defensive end
8:46
If you guys remember, WIP did the pepper early in Lowe Park for Reggie White
8:51
It changed the game. contracts and all that. That's what opened the door for free agency
8:57
in 1993. Keep in his heart, he wanted to always stay in Philly, just like his wife said
9:05
on that foot life story. It's just a shame that Brayman did that to him
9:10
Brayman and Harry Gable said they offered him a contract. Like you said
9:16
Reggie White's wife said they never did. I believe her before them
9:22
Oh, yeah, definitely. And let's not forget about God. God told Reggie
9:27
yeah, you should probably go to Green Bay. Yeah. I know. It's funny
9:31
It's funny. He got his ring, you know. God bless. You want to know something, though
9:37
You want to know something that's absolute bull? And I don't know if this is still there or not
9:41
but I remember the first time I was ever at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio
9:46
I walked through the hall. I walked through the, you know, where all the busts are on display and all that
9:51
Yeah. And coming out right on the wall is a portrait of Reggie White making a sack
10:01
on a quarterback in a Packers uniform at Lambeau Field. Now, if that wasn't a middle finger to Philadelphia enough
10:09
do you know what quarterback he's sacking? Probably Randall. Randall Cunningham. Oh, my God
10:17
And I haven't even been up there. Oh, man. I never saw that when I went there
10:24
Ridiculous. Ridiculous. All the quarterbacks he could have sacked, and they have him sacking Randall
10:30
Gee, thanks. Yeah, 198 sacks. Was Randall in an Eagles uniform? He wasn't
10:39
Yes, he wasn't. He played Minnesota in the state division. Yeah, he wasn't wearing his third-string Cowboys uniform
10:49
Oh, God. I know. I know. You know, it's funny. You could almost do a show on, like, guys like Randall
10:57
I think Randall rounds up with the Cowboys. I think Harold Carmichael rounds up with the Cowboys
11:03
Oh, Harold, that's my dude. I love that guy. There's a famous story about Harold Carmichael seeing himself in the Cowboys jersey
11:13
And he was, like, going out on the field for, like, a preseason game or week one or whatever, and he walked by a mirror and he saw himself
11:18
and he goes, oh, God, this ain't right, and then he retired. I got to ask him about that legend of a story
11:25
and you might file this under don't let the facts get in the way of a good story
11:30
because that's the best version of the story, but not true. Apparently, he saw himself in the uniform, went out and played a couple weeks
11:38
and then decided to call it quits, but it wasn't like an instantaneous
11:42
oh, man, I'm wearing a Dallas Star, get me the hell out of here kind of thing. So I hate to spoil that one
11:48
Hey, let's keep it real. As much as we love our sports and we love the Eagles and all
11:55
those bills still come, you know what I mean? Sure, sure, sure. Mark, I've got one quick question if you could ever ask Seth Joyner
12:02
Sure. Why wasn't he ever on the song, Buddy's Watching You? Because he's not
12:08
I've had to ask him before. I've asked him that same question
12:14
I believe his answer if I remember correctly he might have not even given me a reason
12:22
I think he just said he was glad he wasn't a part of it I think he said I'm glad I missed that day
12:28
I'm glad I missed that day I'm just kind of surprised he wasn't on because I mean you go Greg Gary
12:34
like guys that Roynell Young you know Luis Zendejas might have even been in that one
12:41
he was I think he was I realized Mike Quick wrote some of that
12:49
Really? Yeah. I believe he – I think specifically he wrote the line – oh, wow
12:55
Now, okay. Randall Cunningham, quarterback. I'm the one everyone tries to sack
13:03
Now you see me. Now you don't. He's got to give you that 80s flair as you bust it out
13:11
Yeah, I would try to grow the high top, but as you can see, that'd be a problem
13:17
That song was like so 80s. That and that. I could just picture that and then the Eddie Murphy song
13:25
Party all the time, baby. Yeah, there you go. Yeah, exactly. Oh, my God
13:29
Yeah. Inspired by probably. That's all, buddy. Buddy's watching you. That's all that needed
13:38
That's all that needed was Rick James in there. Oh, yeah. Oh, definitely
13:45
And, yeah, either that or then Prince beating everybody in basketball and making everybody pancakes
13:54
Let's keep going. Dave Chappelle just hangs out. I don't know how old Dave Chappelle would have been
13:57
but it would have been hilarious. I know, right? And you know what? Going down that path, I don't know if you guys have talked about this yet
14:04
with Buddy Ryan, but Chris Carter has acknowledged multiple times that Buddy Ryan
14:10
saved his life. Imagine imagine a guy that gets 11 touchdowns one year
14:18
as a wide receiver and then he's gone. Gone. It was shocking. But
14:25
he has had bad drug addiction and like you said, changed his life
14:31
he went on to having a nice career in Minnesota and the rest is history
14:36
Hall of Fame, man. Unbelievable. Yeah, Chris Carter at all. I mean, there's
14:41
so many great receivers. Chris Carter might have had the greatest set of hands of any receiver I ever
14:46
saw. I mean, how many one-handed catches did that dude make? I mean, he was alive
14:54
As I said all he did was catch Thompson And the guy loved going across the middle when people didn like to Yeah And he did it all as well without the oven mitts that receivers wear today
15:11
He had gloves, but he didn't. Yeah. Real mitts with their hands
15:16
Yeah. That's right. That's right. Well, listen. Hey, Mark, you know, I really appreciate you taking the time
15:23
for hanging out with us, man. Thanks a lot. It was a great time
15:27
Love talking, buddy. Everybody make sure you check out the Forresty Show. It's on every day
15:32
Every morning, right? 6 o'clock? Yeah, around there. Right there, Sean? Right, Fuji
15:39
Hey, whenever you come on, it's a great time. Oh, God bless
15:44
It's very nice. Thanks for having us. Thanks for coming on, man
15:51
Your show is great. I appreciate it. I appreciate that, guys. Thank you
15:56
No, anytime I'm having a good come on, I got to get into magic night now
15:59
because my wife and I wouldn't even know about this. I got an email today
16:04
I thought I was supposed to be at softball. That was going to be an easy thing to do
16:08
Now I'm at the school and the Wi-Fi is terrible. So I got to go in and watch some guy pull a rabbit out of his hat or something
16:15
No little touch. Best of luck in softball, man. Yeah, good luck
16:19
Make those memories, man. Thanks, fellas. Appreciate it. Good talking about buddy
16:23
All right, man. Have a good one. See you, boys. You too
16:27
See you. See you. Oh, man. It was a good time. Yeah
16:32
So he's watching. So many. And the family fans are too. So many stories
16:40
I got a comment here. Mike Papert Jr. says Randall and Chris Carter both had great years in Minnesota
16:47
Definitely. Especially that 98 season. I mean, I think most of Philadelphia, I think
16:54
was rooting for Randall that year to get to the Super Bowl. Oh, absolutely. That would have been a hell of a Super Bowl, LA against Randall
17:00
You got any more comments up there, Joey, that we missed? No, I think we're all caught up
17:06
But, yeah, man, you know, like, hey, you know, thanks again to Angelo
17:11
and Mark for coming on. You know, it was a great time. I love getting into the stories and, you know
17:17
the impact that Buddy Ryan had. um you know i have a you know i would you know net um you know i have a whole bunch of things
17:25
here like notes on buddy you know what you know his impact on the game and stuff and you know i
17:30
wrote that in the article so if anybody wants to check out the article um great article man check
17:34
it out really most of the time most of the time when uh when you know when we do these old schools
17:41
you know what i mean like i kind of you know i like to go down the timeline and talk about the
17:45
guy. But I feel like for, I feel like for Buddy and, and, and especially with having, you know
17:50
Angelo and Mark one, you know, I feel like, I feel like it's more for me, Buddy Ryan is more
17:55
about stories. You know what I mean? Like stories and experiences. Like I can, you know, how
18:02
how many memorable games they have? Like, like I'll bring up one, like the 89, you know, like
18:07
the year, you know, Eagles are playing Washington down at RFK. And, you know, you, you guys probably
18:13
I remember this. Randall signs the contract extension. You know, Washington gets up 20 to nothing
18:19
And Mike Papernet Jr. is talking about Randall and Chris Carter. Well, those two, you know, Washington gets up 20 to nothing
18:26
The Eagles had a great, great comeback. Randall throws for like 400 and some yards
18:31
And I think the players might actually carry – I feel like they might have carried Buddy off the field that way
18:37
They did. They did, right? It was that game and an Oilers game
18:42
I think they carried them off. I think Keith Jackson had the game-winning touchdown
18:48
He did, yeah. And Washington was ready to win. And I think – I remember I think it was Wes Hopkins
18:57
and Seth Joyner played a big role in the play. Gerald Riggs broke out on a big run and then somebody stripped the ball
19:04
Next thing you know, the Eagles ran it back. And then like you said, Fooge, like Keith Jackson catches a touchdown
19:09
in the end zone. I mean, I was, you know, but, but I remember that day, like, you know, I could go back like, like my grandfather, you know, like, like for me, Buddy Ryan, it's, it's, you know, the, these stories are more, are more than just football
19:22
They're memories. Like my, I went to church with my grandfather that day, you know, like we went and got donuts from, uh, there was a place in, uh, Lou, I think, Sean, remember Lou Moore Bakery
19:32
Yeah. Yeah. All right. Yeah. I remember getting donuts, you know, when I'm sitting in my grandfather's basement and, you know, me, my grandfather, my grandmother watching the game
19:41
And, you know, when you when you talk about, you know, these stories and these experiences, I feel like that plays a role
19:49
You know, you know what I'm saying? Oh, yeah. It's just like the games, watching the games with my dad in the basement
19:57
The Jordan's game, you know, it's like you said, it just brings back great memories
20:03
I don't think a lot of people knew this, but I believe Buddy Ryan was on the coach and staff in a 69
20:12
or when the Jets won. 69? No. Yeah, he actually was. Yeah, Buddy was on that staff
20:21
In fact, he played a big – he actually was credited with
20:25
the Colts offense was vaunted. I mean, they had Johnny Unitas back then, and he held them the what, three points
20:31
Yes. You know, and then Buddy was actually I mean, Buddy's career, he was with that
20:38
Jets team Then he went to Minnesota He was the defensive pro coach
20:43
For the purple people leader So what did he win, two Super Bowls
20:48
Jets and the Bears? Yes, yeah, two Super Bowls And of course the Bears
20:53
Who could forget that? He's the last coach In the NFL, or assistant coach I should say
20:59
To be carried off you know carried off the field I mean it's him and him and Dick at NCI they come to stand each other
21:07
yeah Fuji me and you and I were talking about this before the show you you said yeah what was
21:12
it you said about the Bears players or something you said the Bears the Bears the Bears players uh
21:18
went when Neil Armstrong was fired like they they went to management because they wanted to keep
21:22
Buddy what was that story about it was one of Buddy's matter of fact I did look this up and it
21:29
It was 1981 when they fired the head coach of the Bears
21:36
The players wrote a letter asking George Halas to keep Buddy Ryan on the staff
21:42
when they hired Ditka. Yeah, and let's be honest, you know, that couldn't have been any
21:51
I mean, you look at two guys that had huge egos, you know, the Hall of Famer, Mike Ditka, right
21:57
And then you got Buddy Ryan. I mean, you know, they almost – I have been here
22:04
They almost came to blows like that great season in 85. Their only loss, they almost went to blows at halftime
22:11
Miami beat them that year, I think. Yeah, it was a Monday night in Miami
22:17
And, again, you know, we all love – obviously, Buddy with the memories
22:23
Buddy was a great defensive mind But the one thing about Buddy defense and we saw that a little bit here in Philly at times you know if you found a way to protect the quarterback you could exploit the secondary
22:36
And in that Miami game, you know, Dan Marino, you know, hit the Marks brothers and I think they put like 38 on them
22:44
Yeah, I forget what the score was, but that was a team that knocked the Bears winning, you know, being undefeated
22:52
Yeah, but a great run of success here. Buddy comes to Philly in 86
23:02
As we touched on before with Angelo, the team was downtrodden. Let's keep it real
23:10
After Vermeule left, the Eagles were no different than the Jets and the Browns
23:16
This was a shitty football team. They were horrible under Coop. I'm not going to tell you Marion Campbell
23:24
Yeah, I mean, Marion Campbell, there was no juice. I mean, you know, the team almost moved to Arizona, like you said
23:31
Oh, yeah, like I said, that was the only good thing Brayman did was prevent the
23:35
I mean, they were basically sold. And Brayman stepped the hell in and saved the day
23:40
It's probably the only good thing he ever did for this city. Saving that franchise, saving Eagles franchise
23:48
Yeah, so then, you know, Buddy comes in with a lot of bluster, you know, coming off the Super Bowl with the Bears, you know, and, you know
23:55
gave the city some confidence. And, you know, 86, they were 86
24:00
They struggled. They were like 5'10 and 1. But then he started, you know, Randall started playing
24:06
And, you know, towards the end of that year, you could see some, you know, you could see some growth, you know what I mean
24:13
Randall would make some plays. The 87 season we touched on, you know, you had, you know, 87 draft
24:19
You bring Jerome Brown into the fold. You know, and, you know, Chris Carter comes with the – what did they have
24:28
It was the Southman, right? That's how they got Reggie White from the USFL
24:34
Yeah. I think they – or then the Eagles buy the rights
24:39
I forget. Buy the rights. Yeah, from the Memphis Showboats. Yeah, Memphis Showboats
24:44
For like a million dollars, I believe. And then get it from the Philadelphia Stars
24:49
Yeah, I mean, my dad had season tickets to the USFL, man
24:53
That was fun. No, at those Stars' first game they played at the vet
24:58
when they played the New Jersey Jones. Yeah. Yeah. A lot of great memories
25:06
Yeah, so 87 you have to strike. And in my eyes, that was the turning point
25:12
You know, we talked, you know, with Buddy sticking up for his players
25:16
Randall improving. been Reggie White had what like 21 sacks or 20 sacks in like 12 games I mean it was arguably the
25:23
best defense arguably the best season ever from a defensive lineman the scabs that's what they
25:29
called the player the replacement player yeah yeah well and and that was the reason that that
25:36
was the reason Buddy did the fake spike against Dallas because you know the venerable Tom Landry
25:41
Mr. Class, you know, all those, a lot of their starters, you know
25:46
cross the picket lines and they beat the Eagles, you know what
25:51
in the replacement league. So then Buddy gets his – Angelo touched on it earlier
26:00
I do think that was the turning point and that was the start of the Buddy era
26:04
because the fans totally got behind it because everybody hated Dallas And then the players were like, hey, you know what
26:11
This guy has our back. And, you know, he's sticking up for us
26:17
Well, if you remember – well, I don't know if you guys remember that game, but I remember Randall took a knee and then threw the ball. Yes
26:23
Yeah, I remember. I remember, dude, I was nine years old, bro
26:30
I was young. I was over my buddy Mike Edwards' house, and we were outside playing
26:35
And then we happened to be in his house at the end of the game, and the Eagles did that
26:40
And imagine like two little kids just like fist-pumping and high-fiving at like nine years old
26:46
You know what I mean? Like, dude, we love Buddy Ryan. I was 15. I remember that game
26:50
Yeah. Yeah. Yeah, I was going to say, damn, you were 15
26:54
Yeah, you were a little older there. But, yeah, we were real little
26:59
You know what I mean? And we loved it. And so, yeah, so, you know, so the 87 team just barely missed the playoffs
27:05
And then, you know, 88 comes, and we touched on that. You know, you had the Fog Bowl
27:09
88 brought out Randall Cunningham. It was their first Monday night game
27:13
Ultimate weapon. Yeah, ultimate weapon. It was the first Monday night game they had since the Vermeule era
27:20
The Giants came here at the stadium, and Randall had that great play
27:24
where he was like Gumby and made Carl Banks miss. He hits Jimmy Giles in the end zone
27:30
The 88 team. That was the other thing about Buddy Ryan. What an eye for talent
27:38
I mean, you look at some of his draft picks, like the 88 draft, the first two picks were Keith Jackson in the first round from Oklahoma
27:46
And the second round, the Hall of Fame or Everett Galen, quarterback from Arizona
27:52
You know, so awesome. Yeah. So so he adds these two guys on the team makes the playoffs for the first time
28:00
You know, they win the NFC East. They sweep the Giants that year, make the playoffs for the first time since 1981
28:05
and Buddy goes to Chicago, blaring horns. And to this day, and Angelo said this earlier
28:17
to this day, that was their best run to win the Super Bowl
28:22
Because if you guys remember, 49ers won the Super Bowl that year
28:26
They beat the Bengals in that great game. The Eagles were up
28:30
The Eagles were up. By, like, was it 21-0 in 89, and Montana brought the 49ers back and beat the Eagles
28:40
Yeah. Oh, yeah. Yeah, I think they sacked Montana, like, 11 times in that game
28:46
Yeah. You know? But to this day, that 88 team was their best shot
28:52
I mean, you know, because at all the 49ers dynasty, that was their worst team
28:58
They were only 10-6 that year. You know, I mean, you know, dude, you know, if we had beaten Chicago
29:05
like I think, you know, they should have. Because that first half, they were up and down the field
29:10
I mean, like you said, Fuge, it was penalty. It was, you know, Anthony Tony, I think, had a full start penalty
29:16
You know, you had a couple turnovers, you know. Dropped in the end zone
29:20
Yeah, that's what it was. Yeah, dropped pass in the end zone. Or a couple
29:25
But that was their best chance. And, you know, and then the following year they go 11-5
29:32
They're a wild card. And, you know, as much as we love Buddy
29:37
I think that 89 season really showed the warts, you know, because they host the Rams here New Year's Eve day, you know
29:47
in a rainy day. Flipper Anderson. What did you say, Fooj? Flipper Anderson and Henry Ellard towards them
29:56
Jim Everett. Yeah. Jim, that worked towards him. Or as Jim Rome would say, Chris Everett
30:02
Chris Everett. Don't you get Chris Everett. He suckered him right off the chair
30:08
I'll never forget. That was right when ESPN2 just started. I think, what was that, like 93, 94 or something like that
30:17
Right on live TV. Couldn't get better. You know what, though? I don't blame Jim
30:23
You know, I mean, that Jim Rome had a lot of balls, though
30:28
I mean, you know, not for nothing. but Jim Everett was a quarterback. Show a little bit of respect
30:33
You know what I mean? I don't know. I kind of wish he did beat his beat as you know what
30:40
Mike Pappernick Jr. says, Andy brought the glory back and Doug and Nick win Super Bowls
30:46
but Buddy Ryan will always be a god in Philly. Totally agree. It's just like we said
30:53
it's just a damn shame that the offensive line was never good enough
30:57
you know Randall just couldn't get it done in the big spot um you know so 89 they're good again
31:03
and then you know we get to the end of the era um coming into the last season 1990 you know uh
31:12
Buddy goes into his last year as a coach and you know you got to figure Norman Brayman's kind of
31:17
getting tired of hearing that he's the guy in France I mean I mean you know Norman Brayman
31:23
had his issues, obviously, but imagine you're the owner of the team
31:27
and you've got a guy calling you the guy in France. You're not going to be too
31:31
cool with that. You know what I mean? That was a classic. He loved it
31:37
Yeah, right. That was great. The 1990 season, though, to Buddy's credit, they actually did add to
31:47
the offense. Before the 90 season, they go out and they draft
31:51
Arkansas Fred Barnett, and they draft Calvin Williams. Mike Bellamy. It's ironic
31:59
Mike Bellamy was the guy they picked first. He was the second round pick, and he was the best
32:03
Mike Bellamy from Illinois. He got hurt, I think. Yes, he did
32:08
He got hurt. What did you say, Sean? He hurt his knee
32:15
He never panned out. you know and then and then you if you guys remember it early in the 1990 season they started
32:25
out oh when two I was at I was actually at that Arizona game the week two they won't they lost to
32:30
the Giants on a Sunday night the eventual world champion Giants and then the set week two they
32:38
play Arizona you know with Neil Lomax and all them guys or whatever and I'm at that game and
32:44
They go 0-2, and a lot of people thought Buddy was going to get fired
32:48
Well, not fired right then, but the very following week, they had to play at L.A. against the Rams
32:54
And a lot of people were saying that might have been – he might have been coaching for his job in that game because they were 0-2
33:00
If they go 0-3, he might get fired. Well, they wind up winning that game
33:06
They go 10-6. That's the year of the body bag game. And that's also the year where Randall – Randall's the finalist for MVP in that year
33:17
I think – Pruge, I think that was the ultimate weapon. The ultimate weapon on the sports over the cover
33:23
Yeah so Buddy in the last year of his contract They go 10 You know they have the body back game They host Washington at the stadium And unfortunately Buddy last game here goes out with a whimper
33:40
I mean, Randall gets benched. They bring Jim McMahon in. The offense did absolutely nothing
33:46
And they lose, I believe it was 20-6, I think. Yes. Yeah
33:52
They named the score touchdown. Yeah, so they – Field goals. Yeah, and you know what's ironic
34:01
Actually, they didn't score a touchdown in Chicago. They had a bunch of field goals
34:06
I think they did score one touchdown versus the Rams, but it was kind of like meaningless
34:11
It was like the end of the game. Right. I think it was, yeah
34:15
So if you think about it, in three playoff games, they had one offensive touchdown
34:21
That's just not going to cut it. And Buddy was fired the next day because I remember I was sitting in the homeroom
34:30
It was my senior year, the judge. And the homeroom came out and said, Buddy Ryan was fired
34:39
Wow. I know. It was really, you know, for all the great memories, you know, being a kid
34:45
and falling in love with football. And there were so many great memories, you know what I mean
34:49
But in a way, when you look at that last game, it's a little sad
34:56
because it's like that team had so much talent. There were so many good moments
35:02
And for all the great memories, it's unfortunate that they didn't get it done
35:09
You know what I mean? But, hey, the memories live on. And we had a lot of laughs and a lot of smiles
35:18
So, but yeah, Fuji, was there any, before we wrap up here
35:25
do you guys have any particular game that you remember, like where you were or what you were doing in that era
35:31
I remember the body bag game because I was underage drinking in a bar
35:37
called the Shore Road Tavern. Nice. On a Monday night. And 80 cents for a little
35:44
I just remember them beating up You know, knocking, bringing in Brian Mitchell as the
35:52
Emergency quarterback It was, yeah, Deardorff And Al Michaels On the broadcast
36:01
Yeah, I always remember Deardorff Calling Andre Waters dirty waters All the time
36:07
You know, how about you, Sean? I know you and I have a lot of memories
36:12
We share together, but it was only after buddy wrong, usually. We remember
36:17
the Cotide and the Ray Rhodes more, but how about you in particular? Any when you were a kid
36:25
The Houston Orders game. Yeah. They brought the house, we brought the pain
36:32
Yeah. I mean, just introduction. That was a straight-ass beat down from pillar to post
36:41
Yeah. Yeah. I mean, I just love football, you know. And you can test too, just playing tackled football
36:49
up across the street from your grandparents' house, you know. Yeah. Yeah How about Maurice Wright How about this iconic play the Randall Cunningham Fred Barnett you know a single attack of Bruce Smith Right Fred Barnett
37:07
That was a great one. And you brought up the Oilers game, and, you know, obviously we know
37:13
that was right after Buddy got fired. But to this day, I don't think I've ever seen a linebacker play a single game
37:24
Like Seth Joyner that night played like his hair was good. I've never seen a – that was like one of the greatest performances
37:31
I think I've ever seen a linebacker have. So true. Plus they knocked out two receivers, I think
37:40
Yeah, they did. They knocked – was Webster Slaughter one of them
37:44
Yeah. He played. Yeah. Yeah, they were. And Jeffries. They went Jeffries
37:50
They knocked him out too. 81 and 89 Well, Hopkins took one out
37:57
Like helmet to helmet Yeah And they just beat up Warren Moon
38:03
Like, I forget They made him a rag doll that night I forget how many times they shacked him
38:08
Yeah, well, that was the Oilers They were a good team And they used to play that
38:13
Remember, they played that run and shoot Run and shoot Yeah, I think Buddy used to call it the chuck and duck Yeah
38:20
You know, but But, yeah, you know, we could go on and on
38:26
But, you know, it's just, you know, I think we all hit it out of the box, man
38:31
Yeah, so it was a lot of fun. Thanks again to Angelo and Angelo Fertaldi and Mark Farzetta for coming on
38:40
I really appreciate them taking the time. And like we were saying earlier, you know, this is our first
38:46
I did some old schools in the past. I know you guys did a couple with me, you know, the 93 Phillies and stuff like that
38:53
But this is our first show in this new venture here. And, you know, really excited to do it
39:01
And probably in about a month, you know, have some good ideas coming up in about a month's time
39:08
I'm looking into doing the 80s Flyers, the Mike Keenan era. So, you know, and in particular, that run versus Edmonton
39:16
And, I mean, you know, I'm really excited to do that. And I feel like it's a good time to do it
39:22
considering we have no playoff hockey in this town, you know. Not for a long time
39:27
Right. And then, you know, a few weeks after that, two a month after that
39:31
I'm thinking 0-1 Sixers, you know, because, again, we have no basketball in this town
39:35
I mean, Christ, whoever runs the Wells Fargo Center, they want to charter a flight and, like, drop them off at, like
39:43
Tom Hanks' Castaway Islands. You know what I mean? I mean, it's crazy, you know, much time
39:49
And then I'm thinking, I'm thinking sometime in the summer, you know, we'll do maybe, you know, 07 to 11 Phillies, including the 08 team
39:58
I'd like to do it. This isn't necessarily old school because it's modern day, but I'd like to do a Jeff Lurie show
40:05
And, you know, obviously we're a Philadelphia theme because we all are from Philadelphia
40:10
But I, you know, I think it'd be cool to do a sports show. So I'm going to hold my nose when I say this, but, you know, when football season comes – no, seriously, when – a good story is a good story, right
40:21
So Maurice Wright and the Bills I like to do one on those Bills teams you know because they a great story Four times man They went to the Super Bowl four straight years a great story of perseverance
40:39
Or Scott Norwood. Yeah, and you know what? I probably shouldn't say this because I'll probably lose the whole audience
40:46
but I'm even considering I think I'm going to do the 90s Cowboys
40:51
and it hurts. Hey, I'm holding my nose when I say it, but like I said
40:55
a story is a story. And, you know, they for example, for example, right, we're all diehard Eagles fans, but you have to like football to be an Eagles fan
41:07
Right. So we all watched we all watched the draft this week
41:11
Well, I would I would contend that the Herschel Walker trade and and and the Jimmy Johnson trade chart and all that sort and all that stuff helped make the draft as popular as today
41:23
because I don't remember there ever being a draft war room cam
41:28
until that Hershel Walker trade. Yeah, and if you want to watch championships for the Cowboys
41:35
you just pop in that VHL, you know? I know, isn't it
41:40
Isn't it great, though, that we say that? It's funny you say that, Joe
41:45
I love when you hear Cowboys fans, how many championships. Okay, you own the 90s, props to you
41:52
But your ass wants to watch some Super Bowls pop in that VHS and maybe put in the beta tape too
42:03
Yeah, and another thing I was thinking too, after we get past Mike Keenan and the 016ers, and I'd like to do Barkley era, a bunch of them
42:13
Then I'm even thinking of eventually we'll put it out to the audience
42:19
You know what I mean? And and see if there's and, you know, you know, after we get a few in after we get a few in us, you know, I'll put a questionnaire
42:26
And if there's anything that people have an idea of what they of what they'd like to of what they'd like to do, you know what I'm saying
42:33
I think that's interesting. Michael, Mike Papernick Jr. says that the 90s Cowboys don't lose Jimmy Johnson
42:40
They might have won four or five. Well, definitely. Thank God. Thank God. They did, though, because, boy, that would have been torture
42:47
Oh, Switzer. He just inherited that team Jimmy Johnson built. And you know another thing, not to get on that team, but, I mean
42:58
Aikman couldn't, you know, we were saying Aikman was, Switzer was canceling practices early, and Aikman was like on five
43:09
was pissed off about it. Yeah. And one more before we wrap it up
43:16
Mike Papner Jr. says, how about the 83 Phillies with Paul Owens managing
43:20
Yeah, we could get into that. I was even thinking of doing that whole run, like maybe do like the whole Schmidt era
43:27
You know what I mean? Schmidt, Bauer, Luzinski, you know, we could do the whole era, you know
43:31
And like just like the Sixers, you know, Dr. J, you know, the we owe you one
43:37
You know what I mean? So, but anyway, thanks for everybody for checking us out
43:43
Thanks. Thanks for Angelo and more. It's been a blast. And you know, I guess we'll put it out there. We'll be at, we'll be
43:53
we'll be coming back probably in about a month or so. And I hope you all enjoyed this walk down memory lane and we'll see you
44:00
We'll see you soon. Go
