The thing I love most about college basketball is that anything can happen, literally anything
0:05
And today in this video, we will be going over some of the greatest individual performances
0:09
in college basketball history. Some of these you may have heard of, but I guarantee you there will be multiple that
0:15
you haven't. So let's waste no time and get right into my top 15 greatest individual performances
0:21
in college basketball history. At number 15, we have a rather recent performance
0:26
In 2019, Cameron Parker of Sacred Heart put up the NCAA record for assists in a game with 24
0:34
There is a reason this isn't higher. Number one, it was against Division III school Pine Manor
0:39
And secondly, he did this while putting up a whopping zero points from the field
0:43
At number 14, we have probably the most bizarre performance on this list
0:48
Jack Taylor of Grinnell College in rural Iowa put up 138 points in 2012 versus Faith Baptist
0:56
again a D3 school. I almost didn't include this one because Grinnell is a D3 school themselves
1:01
but 138 points is far too many to leave off this list. Taylor shot 52 for 108 from the field
1:09
including 27 for 71 from three. It's one of those stat lines you almost wonder
1:14
isn't really even that impressive because it feels like a video game
1:18
But when you dive deeper into it, you see that Grinnell ran a unique gimmicky offense
1:22
that was based on the principle that more shot attempts equal more points
1:26
And how do you do so? By letting your opponent score and getting the ball back immediately. Number 13 on our list took place on March 11, 2011 during the Mountain West Tourney Semifinals
1:36
when star BYU guard Jimmer Fredette put up 52 points on 15 for 23 from the field
1:42
including 7 of 14 from 3. Going into the game, BYU hadn't beaten Mexico that year
1:48
and their best big man, Brandon Davies, was suspended from the team. It was one of many performances from an era that would redefine a whole area of the court
1:57
for the next generation, coining it Jim Arrange. Number 12 is our only women's college basketball performance on this list
2:05
but it's rightly deserved. This performance comes from none other than Kaitlyn Clark
2:09
No, this is not her triple-double in the Elite Eight versus Louisville. Instead, I believe that a far more impressive performance of hers took place in the Final Four versus South Carolina
2:19
Clark and the Hawkeyes would snap a 42-game win streak for the Gamecocks
2:23
as Clark went on to put up 41 points, 8 assists, and 6 boards, while assisting or scoring on 75% of her team's points
2:32
The game was also the largest viewed college basketball game men or women in 15 years
2:37
On November 14, 2018, Robert Morris played a school called Mount Aloysius
2:43
Somehow, someway, junior guard Josh Williams caught fire from behind the yard
2:48
going 15 for 25 from three, making him the record holder for the most threes in an NCAA game in college basketball history
2:58
Before we get into the top 10, I found a stat during my research that I had to share
3:03
It's certainly not an impressive stat, but it's funny nonetheless. on january 24th 2004 san diego state was playing colorado state when senior guard ben woodrop
3:13
fouled out in only 71 seconds at first i kind of believed it but once i dug deeper i realized it
3:19
was intentional he was a four-year bench warmer averaging like 0.2 points per game and he just
3:24
decided he wanted to be the record holder so he went in the game and fouled out in as fast a time
3:29
as possible nevertheless it's pretty funny and a story he can tell the rest of his life at number
3:33
Number 10 we have a performance I guarantee 95 of you have never heard of It took place on January 5th 1991 versus Loyola Marymount from a little known university called United States International It was a catastrophic season for the university
3:49
They had filed for bankruptcy and players left in droves. The basketball team would finish 2-26
3:55
with just seven players in uniform by the end of the season, but Kevin Bradshaw was one of them
4:01
and he was an absolute scoring machine. He averaged 37.6 points per game that season
4:06
and on January 5th, 1991, versus the iconic Paul Westhead Loyola Marymount squad
4:12
would score 72 points in a single game, breaking the NCAA single game record four points
4:19
against a Division I team, which was set 21 years earlier by LSU's Pete Maravich with 69
4:25
The full story of Kevin Bradshaw is enough to make its own video
4:28
but in this game specifically, he went 23 of 59 from the field
4:33
and 19 of 23 from the free throw line. Bradshaw's team would lose the game 186 to 140
4:39
At number nine, we have another performance and player that you have most likely never
4:43
heard of. And odd enough, this guy was born in the exact same town as I was, Albert Lee, Minnesota
4:50
Ben Woodside, a point guard for North Dakota State in the late 2000s
4:54
On December 12th, 2008, in Ben's senior season at NDSU, they would play Stephen F. Austin
5:00
and Ben would have the game of his life, recording 60 points, 8 rebounds, 8 assists
5:05
going 14 for 32 from the field, and most notably of all, 30 for 35 from the free throw line
5:12
His 30-made free throws would tie Pistol Pete Maravich for the most free throws ever made in an NCAA game
5:18
NDSU would actually lose this game in triple overtime, 112 to 111
5:24
However, Woodside would go on to become the Summit League Player of the Year
5:28
and bring his NDSU Bison to an NCAA tournament with a Summit League Conference Championship
5:35
Oh, and he did this all at 5'11 and 185 pounds. This dude was a certified baller
5:40
Number eight on our list includes something very special. It's the only one of these that has ever occurred in NCAA history, and that is a quadruple double
5:50
It's something that's only taken place four times in NBA history, and I was surprised doing research that it hasn't taken place more in college basketball
5:58
It took place on November 13th, 2007, when UT Martin played Central Baptist College, winning 116-274
6:06
Leicester's stat line for this game was 25 points, 12 boards, 10 assists, and 10 steals in only 31 minutes of play
6:13
He would actually go on to be the Ohio Valley Conference Player of the Year that season and in his next season
6:20
and average 26.6 points per game through his two years at UT Martin
6:24
At number seven, we again have a player you have probably never heard of, Ryan Toulson of Utah Valley
6:31
Oddly enough, he is actually the nephew of Danny Ainge and played for Utah Valley in the late 2000s as well
6:38
And in his senior season on January 29th, 2008 versus Chicago State, Ryan would put up 63 points, 12 boards, 6 assists on 18 for 31 from the field, including 7 for 11 from 3 and 20 of 21 from the free throw line
6:54
Utah Valley would go on to win 123 to 121 in quadruple overtime
7:00
It's real shame that we never got to see Ryan in March Madness. I feel like he was the perfect type of player to will his team to the second round or even
7:09
the second weekend. Unfortunately for us and for Ryan, Utah Valley was an independent school at the time
7:14
They were not a member of a conference and it wouldn't be until the following season
7:18
that they would join a conference giving them a chance to qualify for the NCAA tournament At number six we have a player that you most definitely know and his performance took place in the 2003 NCAA tournament
7:32
more specifically, the Elite Eight. After defeating Pittsburgh 77-74 in the Sweet 16
7:38
Dwayne Wade and the Marquette Golden Eagles would face off in the Elite Eight
7:43
versus top-seeded Kentucky for a trip to the Final Four on the line
7:47
And on the biggest stage, Dwayne Wade had the best game of his collegiate career, finishing with a triple-double, 29 points
7:55
11 rebounds, 11 assists, and 4 blocks, all the while upsetting number one overall seed Kentucky
8:02
in a 14-point route, 83-69. To make this performance more special, nobody expected
8:09
Marquette to make a deep run, much less upset the number one overall seed Kentucky and make the
8:14
Final Four. We're now entering our top five greatest performances in college basketball
8:18
history and at five we have a performance from the exact same NCAA tournament. As great as Dwayne
8:25
Wade's performance was he was not the only future NBA star playing in this tournament and making a
8:30
deep run of his own. Carmelo Anthony led the Syracuse Orange to their first national title
8:37
in 2003 but his greatest performance in this tournament took place in the final four as he
8:43
led his number three seeded Syracuse up against the number one Texas Longhorns. Mello finished the
8:48
game with 33 points on 12 for 19 shooting, 14 rebounds, and three steals in a 95-284 victory
8:56
Much like Marquette, nobody seriously considered Syracuse as a national title contender. They were
9:02
actually unranked in all preseason polls, making them only the fourth team ever to win a national
9:07
title while being unranked in the preseason. At number four, we have one of my favorite
9:12
March Madness performances of all time. Steph Curry in the opening round
9:18
of the 2008 NCAA tournament versus Gonzaga. He had 40 points, five steals
9:23
shot 14 for 22 from the field and eight of 10 from the three-point line
9:28
I actually did a whole video on Steph Curry and the 2008 Davidson Wildcats magical run
9:33
in the NCAA tournament. If you're interested in that video, it'll be on an end screen at the end of this one
9:38
or you can find it on my channel. But this performance is so incredible
9:42
because it was the coming out party for Steph Curry to the world. Davidson would advance to the
9:48
Elite Eight where they would lose to the eventual national champions in the Kansas Jayhawks
9:52
Steph had 30 of his 40 in the second half of this game and as you're seeing some of the clips on the
9:58
screen right now from this game, you can see why I had this so high on my list. Before we get to
10:03
our top three performances, I have two more honorable mentions for you. Number one, Elvin
10:07
Hayes versus Luau Cinder and UCLA's 47 win streak in 1968. Elvin Hayes and the University of Houston
10:15
took on Luau Cinder aka Kareem Abdul-Jabbar and the greatest college basketball dynasty of all time
10:21
the John Wooden UCLA Bruins. This game was played at the Astrodome and it was nationally televised
10:27
which was a huge deal for regular season games in college basketball at the time. Elvin Hayes
10:32
finished the game with 39 points, 15 rebounds, and the two final free throws that would beat UCLA
10:38
71-69. As awesome of a performance as this was, it didn't make the list because Luau Cinder was
10:45
dealing with a scratch cornea, which caused him to shoot 4 for 18 from the field in easily his
10:50
worst performance in his college career. Later that season, in the final four, UCLA and Houston
10:56
would meet again, and this time with a healthy Luau Cinder, UCLA would win in an absolute rout
11:02
101 And our other honorable mention is when Pete Maravich scored 69 points versus Alabama including 47 points in the second half Although it was an incredible performance I love seeing highlights of Pistol Pete playing in college
11:19
They lost that game to a pretty bad Alabama team who was 5-12, so I just couldn't in good conscience add that to this list
11:27
And that brings us to our top three greatest college basketball performances of all time
11:32
At number three, we have Christian Laettner in the 1992 Elite Eight versus Kentucky
11:39
Quite honestly, the most hated college basketball player of all time. And to some extent, rightfully so, in this game, he would stomp on the chest of a Kentucky
11:48
freshman and claim innocence afterwards. But outside of that incident, this is one of the greatest college basketball games we've
11:55
ever seen. Christian Laettner would finish the game with 31 points and seven rebounds on perfect shooting
12:01
from the floor, 10 of 10 from the field, and 10 of 10 from the free throw line. But it was the
12:06
ending that solidified this as one of the greatest performances of all time. Down 103 to 102 with
12:12
only a couple seconds left on the clock, Grant Hill threw a full court pass that Leitner caught
12:17
around the free throw line, turned and hit a game-winning jumper that we know today as the shot
12:24
winning the game for Duke and sending them to the final four, 104 to 103. Second on our list
12:31
we have Danny Manning in the 1988 National Championship. The 1988 Kansas Jayhawks were an afterthought
12:37
when it came to national title contenders in the 1988 NCAA tournament
12:42
Finishing with 11 losses and being a sixth seed in the tournament, they just happened to catch fire at the right time
12:48
propelling them in shocking fashion all the way to the national title game
12:52
where they would face their Big 8 Conference rivals and number one seed, the Oklahoma Sooners
12:58
The Jayhawks went into this game as eight-point underdogs and Oklahoma had already beaten them twice that season
13:03
But as we know, anything can happen in March and Kansas would defeat Oklahoma
13:07
in the national title game 83-79, in large part due to Danny Manning
13:12
being the best player on the court, putting up 31 points, 18 rebounds
13:17
five steals, and two blocks, etching his Kansas Jayhawks into the history books
13:21
as one of the most unlikely national champions of all time. Our long-awaited number one
13:27
greatest college basketball performance of all time is none other than Bill Walton in the 1973 national title game versus Memphis State
13:37
Only a few years removed from Lew Alcindor and UCLA dominating the late 60s
13:42
John Wooden was blessed with another all-time great big man in the early 70s in Bill Walton
13:47
And in the 1973 national title game, he proved why he's one of the greatest college basketball players of all time
13:54
scoring 44 points on 21 of 22 from the field. Yes, you heard that right. He only missed one shot on the night
14:03
A near flawless performance in an absolute blowout. I truly can't think of a performance in college basketball history that would top this one
14:11
As dominant as those UCLA teams were, to shoot like that on the biggest stage
14:16
and to put up 13 rebounds as well, during an era where the NCAA did not allow dunking, is borderline unthinkable
14:24
21 out of 22 field goal attempts tonight. 21 out of 22. I'm sure he's going to break a record tonight
14:32
Well, there you have it. My top 15 greatest college basketball performances of all time
14:37
Let me know in the comments what you disagreed with, what snubs I left off the list. If you
14:42
enjoyed this video, you'll enjoy the video I made on Steph Curry and the 2008 Davidson
14:46
Wildcats' magical March Madness run. As always, thanks for watching, and we'll see you on the hardwood
