is there a best way to grow onions I
0:02
want to find out I've been growing these
0:04
bulbous bad boys for many years now to
0:06
great success but in this video we're
0:08
trying out three different methods to
0:11
see which one is the best bulbing onions
0:14
are challenging to grow for many
0:16
different reasons but the primary one is
0:18
that they take a really long time and it
0:21
really depends on what variety short
0:24
medium long day onions they really
0:26
respond to what's called your day length
0:28
or how long Sun light hours exist in a
0:31
particular day so a long day onion is an
0:34
onion that likes to start bulbing or
0:36
creating that nice fat bulb when the
0:38
days are longer which counterintuitively
0:41
actually means when you're further away
0:43
from the equator think about going to
0:45
Alaska in the summer it is a very long
0:48
day actually when I was up there for my
0:49
30th birthday I was fishing at midnight
0:52
and I could see perfectly fine so what
0:54
I've done here in this patch first of
0:56
all I have a grow bag and I've planted
0:58
some yellow white and red onions in the
1:00
grow bag spaced about 6 in apart or so
1:03
so this is one test but then over here
1:07
I've got a pretty unique setup so I've
1:08
got yellow white and red onions but on
1:12
this half I spaced them out about 6 in
1:15
apart in a row and then I put a line of
1:18
fertilizer in a trench and then 12 in on
1:22
the other side I've got another row of
1:25
onions so this particular set right here
1:27
there's a lot of space between the row a
1:29
lot of space between the onions and a
1:31
whole line of granular organic
1:33
fertilizer running right down the middle
1:35
and the idea there is will they access
1:38
that fertilizer as they grow and will
1:40
that boost their growth either as far as
1:42
how quickly they grow or how big they
1:44
grow and then over here right up at the
1:47
front I spaced them way closer together
1:50
both between themselves and in the rows
1:52
and I didn't use any fertilizer at all
1:55
and what you're seeing now is about 2
1:58
months later the process of that growth
2:01
so as we look at this patch the first
2:03
thing I'm kind of shaking my head at
2:04
myself is that I planted it right next
2:06
to the Epic Greenhouse right here which
2:08
does cast a bit of a shadow out to about
2:10
here so that's why you see some of the
2:12
ones over here being a lot taller than
2:14
these ones no matter what method that
2:17
I'm using and then the grow bag was just
2:19
kind of chilling over there in full sun
2:20
so these actually look arguably the best
2:24
there's nothing I see wrong at all and
2:27
on these I do see a couple weird things
2:29
so I see these little flower bulbs
2:31
coming up on an onion so what an onion
2:34
is is it's a banial crop it grows
2:36
actually over 2 years and the first year
2:38
it's going to produce a bulb the second
2:39
year it's supposed to produce this
2:41
flower stock and unfortunately for some
2:43
of these onions it's doing that in year
2:44
one so the weird part to me though is
2:47
that it's doing it on some onions and
2:49
not others for example I just cut one
2:50
off this onion right here but this one
2:53
is completely fine now when you see the
2:55
flower stock you kind of cry a little
2:57
bit because it's triggering a phase of
3:00
growth that's not really reversible so
3:03
these onions that have flowed aren't
3:05
really going to get a whole lot bigger
3:07
whereas there's this little guy right
3:09
here that has not flowered and I can
3:10
already see a bulb starting to develop
3:13
which is really good news so right now I
3:16
actually don't have enough information
3:17
to say what I think is going to do the
3:19
best the only thing I can say is that
3:21
the fertilized trench seemed to bulb a
3:23
little bit more than the non-fertilized
3:26
area over here I only see a couple bulbs
3:28
there I had maybe like six or seven over
3:31
here and then in my grow bag I have zero
3:33
bulbs so I guess we're going to have to
3:35
just check in in a month or two and see
3:38
which one wins cuz right now I'm
3:39
actually pretty confused they look
3:41
pretty good I have to say even the ones
3:43
in the containers but the ones in the
3:44
containers are bulbing at a slower rate
3:47
in fact in the last couple weeks these
3:49
ones in ground regardless of method have
3:52
bulbed quite a bit over here on the
3:53
trench side I noticed that these seem to
3:56
be a little bit larger as far as the
3:57
bulb diameter goes but height-wise they
4:01
kind of look the same remember that
4:02
sunlight issue is probably what's
4:04
causing this growth kind of decline as
4:07
we get closer to the greenhouse but over
4:09
here I still see some pretty nice bulbs
4:11
though I would estimate they're about
4:13
50% smaller just with a quick visual
4:17
than the ones grown spaced further apart
4:19
both in the row and with the fertilizer
4:21
so we're getting pretty close to harvest
4:23
remember you want to harvest an onion
4:24
when that neck breaks so when that flops
4:27
over we'll see I'll do a full weight
4:29
measurement every metric you could
4:31
possibly want in probably another few
4:32
weeks the onion patch is looking strong
4:36
not only that I'm finally starting to
4:37
see some developments where I feel like
4:39
I can make a little bit of a call on
4:41
what's going on and why so on this
4:43
section which is the trenched and well
4:45
spaced section with fertilizer I'm
4:48
seeing some very large bulbs I'm talking
4:50
a bulb maybe about this big so kind of
4:53
the biggest that I would expect it to be
4:54
for the varieties that I planted here
4:56
and then when I Meander On Through To
5:00
this side which is planted closer
5:01
together no fertilizer I'm still
5:03
honestly seeing pretty darn good onions
5:06
but none of them are massive like some
5:08
of the ones on this side so I suspect
5:10
that this spacing and fertility perhaps
5:12
is contributing to that but to be honest
5:14
with you guys I would not be upset to
5:16
have all of these onions as my only
5:18
Harvest so I'm very excited only time
5:20
will tell and then we're going to do a
5:21
count and weigh and see if we actually
5:23
learned anything my friends it is time
5:25
we planted This Together almost 6 months
5:28
ago in early January and I'm sitting
5:30
looking at what looks like kind of a
5:32
pile of trash these don't look that good
5:34
but that's actually the perfect time to
5:36
harvest so when onions have what's
5:39
called a broken neck when the top flops
5:43
over that's our signal to harvest so
5:45
what I want to do now is come through
5:46
and harvest lay them all out on the
5:47
table with the labels and try to figure
5:50
out if this planting technique made any
5:53
difference at all and then finally what
5:55
I'll do is provide my recommendation on
5:57
what i' do with my onions next year all
5:59
right I I have a lot of onions guys I
6:00
don't know exactly what I'm going to do
6:01
maybe over on the Epic homesteading
6:03
Channel you will see what we turn these
6:04
into that's where I explore kind of what
6:06
to do after you harvest from the garden
6:08
that you're growing but what we need to
6:09
do now chop all the tops off and weigh
6:12
and count them and see what kind of
6:13
difference there was already I'm
6:14
starting to see a couple differences but
6:17
I'm going to let the results speak for
6:18
themselves so to start the measuring
6:20
process I am going to remove the tops
6:23
just to level the playing field normally
6:25
when you're growing an onion like I said
6:26
you're waiting for this to break and
6:27
then you're curing your onion and you're
6:29
leaving it out and like dappled sunlight
6:31
for at least a few days for the skin to
6:33
get nice and papery and for this
6:35
Junction point to be completely dry so
6:37
if I cut this off there's a little bit
6:39
of juice still up in here definitely
6:41
smells like a little onion juice
6:42
normally I'd want that to be perfectly
6:44
dry for this use case but I got to
6:46
figure out how much these things weigh
6:47
so I'm going to chop it off that's
6:48
number eight and number nine and we are
6:52
at 7 lb 5.2 Oz on our yellow grandx that
6:55
was trenched and fertilized 10 6 lb 7 oz
6:58
that's 10 at 7 lb 2.4 Oz 9 at 5 lb 2 oz
7:05
9 at 6 lb 4.2 o and 10 6 lb 4 oz 10 6 lb
7:12
3.3 Oz 10 3 lb 11.2 Oz forgot about the
7:19
grow bag onions I've got 1 two woo 3
7:25
four five and six and actually a buried
7:30
seventh right here which is a white
7:31
onion so not the best comparison but we
7:35
did what we could do in the grow bags
7:37
and I have to say if you only have space
7:39
for grow bags these are some pretty
7:41
decent looking onions like I'd be proud
7:43
of these onions if I was growing in grow
7:44
bags exclusively so let's toss these in
7:47
here and seven 2 lb 6.3 Oz I have to say
7:51
one of the cooler onion harvests that
7:53
I've ever had so what you see here on
7:55
the table is each variety yellow granx
7:57
we got white Bermuda Texas super sweet
7:59
and our red onion with our fertilized
8:02
trench and broader spaced on the right
8:05
side and our tighter spaced with no
8:07
fertilizer on the left side and it goes
8:09
down we'll put a chart up for you but
8:11
it's no surprise that giving it more
8:13
space and fertility resulted in on
8:16
average more pounds of onions per row so
8:20
in every single instance the trenched
8:22
fertilizer row that was broader spaced
8:24
outperformed the tighter space no
8:26
fertilizer row but some interesting
8:27
nuances on the Texas sup we have nine
8:29
onions here with the same weight as 10
8:31
onions over here so clearly on average a
8:33
heavier onion over here way more Stark
8:36
the red onions this is almost double the
8:38
weight about I don't know about 40% more
8:40
weight than the exact same onion variety
8:43
that just didn't have any fertility and
8:45
it was tighter space so my
8:46
recommendations if I have the space and
8:48
I do in my backyard I would space my
8:50
onions out a little bit more and doesn't
8:51
hurt to throw a little extra fertility
8:53
in there hard to say exactly which was
8:54
the contributing factor I would guess
8:56
just giving them more space cuz onions
8:58
tend to not want to to compete so I'd go
9:00
6 8 in apart maybe 12 apart in rows or
9:04
beds but frankly I've got my grow bag
9:08
onions right here if this is the space
9:09
that you have to grow I'm not crying
9:11
about getting these onions right here so
9:14
do what makes sense for you but we
9:15
thought this would be an interesting
9:17
experiment to run if you have any other
9:18
ones you want to see us do we're doing a
9:19
whole series of garden experiments so
