Proverbs 18:4: "The words of a man's mouth are deep waters; the fountain of wisdom is a bubbling brook." This proverb likens a person's words to deep waters and wisdom to a bubbling brook, suggesting that wisdom is both profound and life-giving, much like water.
Isaiah 55:1: "Come, all you who are thirsty, come to the waters; and you who have no money, come, buy and eat! Come, buy wine and milk without money and without cost." This invitation to come to the waters is symbolic of God's offer of wisdom and salvation freely to those who seek Him.
John 4:13-14: Jesus answered, "Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst. Indeed, the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life." Here, Jesus uses water as a metaphor for the wisdom and salvation He offers, which leads to eternal life.
Ephesians 5:26: "to make her holy, cleansing her by the washing with water through the word," This passage uses the metaphor of water to describe the cleansing and sanctifying effect of the Word of God, likening divine wisdom and teaching to water that purifies.
Proverbs 13:14: "The teaching of the wise is a fountain of life, turning a person from the snares of death." This proverb uses the imagery of a fountain of life to describe the wisdom of the wise, indicating that wisdom is a source of life and protection.
Jeremiah 2:13: "My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water." In this verse, God is described as a spring of living water, and forsaking Him for man-made solutions (broken cisterns) is portrayed as folly.
Psalm 1:1-3: "Blessed is the one who does not walk in step with the wicked or stand in the way that sinners take or sit in the company of mockers, but whose delight is in the law of the Lord, and who meditates on his law day and night. That person is like a tree planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in season and whose leaf does not wither—whatever they do prospers." This psalm compares a righteous person, who delights in God's law and wisdom, to a tree planted by streams of water, highlighting the nourishing and life-giving power of divine wisdom.
These references collectively illustrate the Bible's use of water as a powerful metaphor for wisdom, spiritual nourishment, and the life-giving words of God.
