Thanksgiving is a recurring theme in the Bible, often demonstrated in both grand and humble circumstances. While well-known figures frequently express gratitude, there are also many instances where lesser-known characters exhibit profound thanksgiving. Here are ten examples:
Leah (Genesis 29:35): After the birth of her fourth son, Judah, Leah expressed her thanksgiving to God. The name "Judah" itself means "praise," reflecting her grateful heart.
Hannah (1 Samuel 2:1-10): After years of barrenness and heartfelt prayers, Hannah gave thanks to God through a beautiful prayer when her son Samuel was born. Her prayer is an expression of deep gratitude and rejoicing in God's salvation.
The Ten Lepers (Luke 17:11-19): Of the ten lepers Jesus healed, only one, a Samaritan, returned to give thanks. This story highlights the importance of gratitude, even when others may forget to express it.
The Samaritan Woman at the Well (John 4:1-42): After her encounter with Jesus, the Samaritan woman expressed her thankfulness by sharing her experience with the people in her town, leading many to believe in Jesus.
The Shunammite Woman (2 Kings 4:8-37): She showed gratitude to Elisha for restoring her son’s life by her humble acceptance and recognition of his prophetic role, a subtle yet profound form of thanksgiving.
King Hezekiah (Isaiah 38:9-20): After being healed from a deadly illness, Hezekiah composed a poem expressing his gratitude for God’s mercy and the extension of his life.
Jabez (1 Chronicles 4:9-10): Although briefly mentioned, Jabez stands out for his prayer, which includes a heart of thankfulness towards God for blessing him beyond his pain and circumstances.
The Widow with Two Mites (Luke 21:1-4): Her act of giving everything she had to the temple treasury was an act of profound thanksgiving and trust in God’s provision, even in her poverty.
