Open-casket funerals can be a source of comfort to the family and friends of the recently deceased, as they can help the bereaved in saying goodbye and achieving a sense of closure. A so-called "half-couch" casket is often used, meaning that only the top half of the lid is raised for the viewing, meaning only the deceased's upper-half is visible. In Western cultures, if you were to lift the bottom half of the coffin up, you'd likely notice that the deceased isn't wearing shoes. There are exceptions, of course, especially if the deceased was known for wearing a certain kind of shoe, like cowboy boots, and the family requested them. But generally speaking, people go shoeless in their caskets. Why? Here's the real reason people are buried without shoes.
