Hello and welcome back to the Royal Watcher podcast
0:07
Today, Sam and I are joined again by our lovely friend, Casper, who's here to discuss the wedding of Princess Theodore of Greece and Denmark
0:15
which has been, I think, probably one of the events of this year
0:20
We've waited for this wedding for quite a long time now, and we're glad it's finally happened
0:25
Yeah, the last Greek royal wedding. And it was such a thrill to watch it. Very nice
0:33
Yes, it's been quite a thing. I think we've been looking forward to this wedding for a long time
0:40
And if we move on to the next slide, we'll see kind of one of the reasons why this wedding was initially delayed was due to COVID
0:48
And then King Constantine passed away last year, which prompted another delay
0:53
And so six years after getting engaged, Princess Theodora finally married. married Matthew Kumar, and she was walked up the aisle by her elder brother
1:03
Prince Pavlos, who's now the head of the Greek royal family, and I found the whole thing
1:08
quite sweet. It was a beautiful wedding and it was very nice that the oldest son took his sister up to the aisle And because he the head of the family now
1:23
Yes, definitely. And there is a bit of an age gap between the two
1:28
So it's nice that they're all quite a close unit still. Yeah, he has adult kids and she don't have any
1:36
So when or if she gets kids, there will be a huge
1:40
age gap. It's like her nieces will her niece or her nephews will have
1:46
kids at the same time as her almost. Oh yeah. No, that's what I was thinking was
1:50
Prince Papos. It's not too far away from kind of his own children's wedding. So this is good practice for him
1:57
Yeah. And she was a brightsmate. So it was together with one of of
2:04
Alexei's daughters. Yes. It was beautiful. It was a very sweet gesture
2:15
And I think we can move on to the next slide where we'll see kind of the beautiful metropolitan
2:21
cathedrals of Athens where the two got married And I think I not sure if you seen that script from the documentary I believe it was 20 years ago in 2004 when King Constantine was back in Greece for the
2:35
Olympics, and they were walking around and visited the cathedral for the first time
2:41
There was this TV program, yeah. Yeah, and he declared that maybe if Theodora finds a nice boy, they'll get married there
2:48
That seemed like a ridiculous notion at the time because of their relationship with the Greek state
2:53
and how it had been, but it was very nice to see kind of his prophecy becoming true
2:59
Yeah. And it's a very beautiful church. I've been in it two years ago
3:05
And it looks so big, but it's actually not that big. Yes, that's kind of what has been surprising me
3:13
And if we move on to the next slide, we'll kind of see the difference. If you also notice the whale that she's wearing
3:21
Yes, which is actually, some very good time talk about it because this is one of those beautiful heirlooms of the Danish
3:29
Royal family. Yes, and it comes from Queen Ingrid's mother, Margaret of Connock, when she got
3:36
married to the Swedish prince and became a later crown princess But she had it and it made by Irish ladies It a very old very beautiful lace that all the descendants since the girls has been wearing
3:53
And the Danish queen Magrata also lent it to Queen Mary when she at that time became a crown princess and was marrying into Denmark
4:04
Which is a very sweet gesture. Indeed it was, yes. And especially, I think, the fact that this veil and also the Tierra has come back to this cathedral
4:15
60 years to the month that her parents got married, I think must have been something that... Yeah
4:22
I like the history of that. Oh, definitely. And it's such like a beautiful piece, and I think Theodora worked very well
4:30
And we can kind of see a bit of a contrast to that day 60 years ago when our parents got married
4:35
and all the royal guests, the hundreds of them who gathered, I think there was eight kings and 11 queens that were in attendance
4:44
And a bit of a contrast to what we see we saw for this wedding this week
4:49
Just it's kind of, did you see that thought the cathedral was so much bigger
4:54
but like, as you say, it's actually not that big in person. It's quite a..
