What’s in this video: In this video, we continue our journey across South America’s railway systems: Chile – Once extensive, Chile’s railways are now focused on freight, but major investments are underway to revive passenger services. Uruguay – A large but mostly inactive network, with recent freight revival and a single passenger line. Paraguay – Rail operations have largely ceased, with only one active international freight link. Bolivia – A fragmented system with two disconnected networks, used for freight and limited passenger services. Ecuador – The national railway shut down in 2020, with only tourist routes operating today. French Guiana – Home to a single railway used exclusively for spaceport logistics. Suriname – Around 160 km of railway exists but is currently unused. Guyana – Former mining lines have been out of service since the 1970s. Venezuela – Some regional passenger lines operate, with others under construction or recently rehabilitated. Colombia – Mostly freight-focused, with limited passenger and tourist services; Bogotá Metro is under construction. Peru – While the network declined, iconic tourist routes and new freight/passenger projects are revitalizing it.
