According to Wray, if you have 3 boats then you have 1. This is a 1979 Century Wray acquired from a gentleman who had done some restoration already. We took out the seats, the sides and the carpet to see what kind of condition everything was in. Once everything has been assessed, we then try to start the engine. After some time on working on it we determined the best course of action is to pull it out of the boat and work on it in the shop.

Hi, it's Ray from Pro Shaper Workshop in Chalden, Massachusetts. This is boat number three
0:13
1979 century, I'm not sure what I think it might be Arabian or something
0:17
I'm not sure the name they call it. It's not a resorter. It's got a Merck Cruiser
0:22
165 Hoss power very the same thing 165 horsepower is my well craft that I bought
0:30
But this one's a 250 cubic inch six-cylinder straight six So mark and I had pulled out the guts out of it already
0:39
The seats and the engine cover I was do a little quick walk around here and show you the boat the hull looks pretty good
0:47
There's a little chafing right here need to be fixed. I think the gel coat will polish out really nice
0:54
And the trail is pretty decent. It's got good good tires on it and
1:00
Basically, you can buy boats like this almost for nothing and this one was extremely inexpensive
1:06
so It's a beautiful boat. It must have sold for a fifteen thousand twelve fifteen thousand dollars new and
1:14
If the motors bad, I don't know we're gonna maybe try to get the motor running right now
1:18
the guy that sold it to me said the motor was fine on it but
1:23
Proof will be in no listen at their run And if it's bad that's plenty of pots available for that the well craft I had one dead cylinder
1:32
It's the 90 pounds, so it needs some attention is probably scored in the bore or something. It's aluminum
1:37
I don't know if it has liners in it or not this I believe is a cast-iron 250 shovey block
1:44
so it's got a really nice deep V bottom hull here and and
1:51
This side looks really good. I just noticed we just did a quick pressure wash on it
1:56
It's been sitting outside for a bunch a lot of nice little teak
2:01
Features on here. These are all gone, but we can easily copy them and teak
2:06
And I just noticed over here There a little bulge I don know why that would happen But I probably will fix that bulge It not a big deal It got a good windshield on it And it got a nice teak deck
2:21
little insert on there For walking on here and it looks like somebody was a little heavyweight on that deck
2:28
And it seems like the windshield is kind of sloping in a little bit
2:33
So there's probably some structure underneath that that bow that cracked and we'll probably have to
2:41
Jack it up and then put some reinforcement in there but This is boat number three. I think it's going to be the last one
2:50
You go on Facebook marketplace and there's these boats for very inexpensive or free
2:55
So the resorter was free and these boats here were just ridiculously low priced
3:02
It came with the Merck cruiser outboard on out drive on it, too. I've got that Stuart on one of the shelves right now
3:10
so Between three boats I should have one for next summer. Oh, so yesterday we took the century. It's a 79 century. We took it and
3:21
Squirted it all up with a really heavy-duty industrial cleaner and then we pressure washed it pulled it inside and
3:27
And I says well, let's see if we get the motor running So instead of spending time just trying to get the motor running says well
3:34
Let's do what we did with the previous one and we'll fog the cylinders and then do a compression check in the first cylinder
3:41
Did I check number six the rear cylinder? It only had like 60 pounds compression all the other ones were 150 a couple were like 165
3:50
and so that tells me there's no sense in even trying to
3:56
Make that run. So I'm gonna pull the head off anyways and find out why
4:01
That cylinder was low and then when I was looking at it
4:05
I noticed that when I purchased this boat from a guy in Connecticut
4:10
He said that nothing's needed on the floors because I handled all that I did the floor is all beautiful
4:17
Well his idea beautiful in my idea are beautiful at two different things So he got some Home Depot 2x8s and 2x4s in here and it looks like he replaced the part of the floor with some kind of particle board or something
4:32
And he had to pull the rug up the rug was glued down really strong and
4:39
The rug went right up the side of the boat. So I had mark
4:44
Totally rip out the rug which was all UV burnt anyway, so
4:49
And it's just trash rug so we're gonna be putting all new rug in had a aluminum gas tank up the front
4:56
probably about a 20 gallon tank and well, you had Esteban help take that out and
5:02
We got it pretty stripped right now and we took the motor out. There's like I think one two
5:11
Six bolts total the front ones are lags They're going into some heavy wood down there and there is some rod and some of that wood
5:18
So we've got to pull this flood floorboards up and the stern drive was already off of it the out drive
5:25
so that makes it really easy because that has the Input shaft into the motor normally, but that wasn't there. So it was very easy to disconnect the motor
5:35
So here's where we're at now So mark is going to have his work cut out on this floor. He's got a good experience now with the well craft
5:43
the well craft I would say is much less elaborate system of flooring this is looks like it's really rigid and
5:54
Add structure to the bottom definitely So some of this plywood has been replaced like I think it's wafer board or something that the
6:04
previous owner put in so we're gonna rip out a lot of this maybe all of it all the way up to the front and
6:10
We'll really investigate it because if I'm gonna fix it, I might as well fix it, right
6:15
So I don't I'm not afraid of tackling this problem I don't think I have as much rot problem in this one as I did the well craft and so
6:27
This one if I do find I know there is some rot because I did see some punky wood right there
6:33
I might patch this in as opposed to try and replace everything but that be After we find out you know how bad the situation is all this has got to come out
6:45
So that's for mark to do the well craft is on the front burner
6:50
That's the boat. I'm hoping to use next summer on Lakeland Sigamund and
6:55
this boat would probably be number two and this 66th century which is needs all that mahogany work will probably be a couple year project or so so
7:05
These are going to be just like little fill-in projects and fun projects to do and it's it's basically a restoration
7:12
But we're going to actually improve and we'll do the upholstery a lot nicer well, here's the motor mark got some footage of us taking the motor out and
7:20
Then we've got it on a little gig here So here's the little
7:26
shabby 250 straight 6 Bulletproof little motor, but apparently it's got ring problems or maybe a scored cylinder or whatever
7:35
I'll take the head off and find out what we see and if we don't see any scoring on the
7:42
The cylinder board then we'll pull the pan down and pull out that that number six
7:48
Piston and and see if the rings are stuck on it It might be as simple as that had the same Rochester two-barrel carburet
7:55
I think is the four-cylinder Merc cruiser that'll probably need to be rebuilt and
8:00
Probably good idea to make a get a new fuel pump for it, too. They were both inexpensive
8:05
and I like the way they did it they wired it so it has a
8:09
One-shot deal we plug most of the wires in and you have to put the main starter wire on and there's a ground wire on the back and
8:18
There's like I think six holes that hold the the motor in six bolts that hold the motor in
8:24
So pulling the motor actually if you know where everything is is only probably
8:31
15 to 15 minutes to 30 minute job if you really really know your stuff took us probably about an hour or so
8:39
Because we had a poke around to find all the stuff. Well, that's it from ray from pro shape a workshop
8:46
Thanks for watching
