Today I'm going to show you a very cool new product. This is the Bush Steel from Wilson Custom Knives, so stick around
0:30
So I got this very cool new ferroceum rod from Wilson Custom Knives. Now if you don't know
0:45
Wilson Custom Knives you may want to check them out or check him out because Sam Wilson is the
0:54
owner operator and he makes some fantastic survival knives that are just beyond belief
1:03
They're awesome. He does a lot of hollow handle knives which you know takes me back to the 80s
1:10
when those were very popular because of the Rambo movie and he makes them so that they're not you
1:18
know cheap junk that's going to fall apart. These are custom knives made in the USA and he's been
1:26
knocking it out of the park with those knives and I've been following him for a while. Well he
1:31
reached out to me and asked me if I wanted to check out a new product of his and it is the Bush
1:36
Steel BUSH. It is a fire steel that he's been producing and like his knives it is hollow
1:46
handled and it has a compass in it. So what I want to do today is I want to go through this thing
1:58
with you, show it to you, show you how I'm going to use it. We're going to test it out and see what
2:06
it does. So it's going to be a fun one. I love ferro rods and this one is awesome. So I cut down
2:16
some of this dry wood that I found, saw that into some manageable pieces and batoned it down using
2:23
my EZ-4. So what I'm going to do is just do some shavings. I'm going to start collecting those
2:35
Already got some twigs going. So real quickly I just kind of want to go over some of the features
3:00
on this ferro rod. One thing I immediately really liked about it was the size of the handle. That is
3:07
such a big deal for me. I like things with a little bit bigger handle that I can get my paws around
3:13
This has a nice machine knurling to it so it's grippy but you can see it fits
3:21
the palm of my hand perfectly. The smaller, more inexpensive ferro rods you get on Amazon
3:31
places like that, they always have those really small little plastic handles on the end of them
3:38
They're great for throwing in a small kit but they are hard to work with. When you're trying
3:45
to start a fire, when you're wet, tired, cold, you want to start right now. So if this is an
3:51
emergency kind of thing you definitely want something that you can grip and control perfectly
3:58
So some of the features on this ferro rod is one, the actual rod itself is replaceable
4:05
There is a set screw right there and it does come with a hex wrench so once you wear this out or
4:10
whatever you can get another one replace it. It also, of course, like I talked about him being a
4:19
survival knife maker, this is hollow handled which is really cool and it has a compass in it which is
4:27
pretty neat and there is a gasket on it so it's sealed. This is going to be watertight
4:33
and then what I've got inside mine, I've stuck some of these dry tinder tabs
4:44
You know you could do a petroleum jelly tinder tab or a cotton ball or something like that but then
4:51
it's going to get the inside of your tube all gunky and that's going to get all over
4:56
the compass and I don't want to do that so I think the dry will work fine. You fluff those
5:01
up they take a spark and they will definitely get a fire going or help get a fire going
5:08
There's some different finishes that you can order from him. This is like a matte finish
5:14
There's also a black and an OD green gun coat that he does which is pretty cool. He also makes
5:22
a match case that is like this minus the ferro rod which is a pretty neat thing to have too so
5:30
that would be a nice addition to this kit. So you know besides making these really high-end
5:36
survival knives he's also making these really high-end ferro rods and match cases and some
5:42
other stuff. So there we go pretty quick
6:12
So so real quick because I know everyone's going to ask the stove is titanium and it's from
6:41
Wild Camping International as well as the pot. I did a video on this a long time ago actually
6:51
years ago a couple years ago at least. Wild Camping International is actually a
6:57
British brand and they sent me that stove in that pot and it's been in my pack and I use it
7:02
quite a bit. I like it a lot. I love these little wood burning stoves. I've got this barbecue flavor
7:09
ramen noodle snack. I got this at the local Asian market. I've never had it before. I don't know
7:17
what it's going to be like. We'll see. And then I had some spam that I fried up earlier this week
7:26
and wanted to use it up so I'm going to put throw that in my noodles as well
7:30
So it is really hot out today. It's been hot out all week
7:40
So the fire steel, I mean it's pretty standard but what I noticed is that it does really big
7:48
sticky gobs of metal coming off of the ferroceramide. That carbide striker is super sharp
8:01
and it just it really peels them off. Now that I got more layers off I'm noticing
8:09
it's starting to throw smaller, a bigger shower. When I was first doing it since the the ferro rod
8:16
is new it was just cutting off big globs that were kind of sticking to the carbide striker
8:22
and they weren't falling exactly where I wanted them at. Now that I've worn off some of that finish
8:28
and I'm just going to wear off one side. I'm not going to do the whole thing because I want
8:32
to protect it until I need it. Now it's getting nice, see that nice small
8:42
sparks but a good shower. That's what you want. You want a nice shower. You don't want just a few
8:49
and you want them to go and concentrate on what you're trying to start and
8:55
since it was new that's kind of what I was having a little difficulty with but it's fine now
9:20
