Drought Tolerant Plants - Silver Foliage
Feb 26, 2026
If you take a look at plants with silvery, gray foliage you'll probably noticed that many of them are exceptionally drought tolerant. Their silver foliage acts like sunscreen to protect them from the intensity of the sun. Well, sort of. It actually reflects the sun away from itself rather than absorbing the sun's rays. When a plant absorbs the sun rays, they need water to process that light to turn it into energy (photosynthesis). So if they are absorbing less, then they won't need as much sunlight to thrive.
I'm with some Dusty Miller in this video, aka Senecio cineraria aka Jacobea maritima. I guess its Latin name was recently changed. Either way, the principle still holds.
