Urzila Carlson Got Her Role in 'Kinda Pregnant' Thanks to a DM

miss the pad on the floor and pee on the tiles. Amy offered me the role

She's like, she slid into my DMs. So this is just a little public service announcement

for people who go, I don't do social media. You know, I can't be bothered with it

Well, you don't know who's in your DMs right now. I had an audition and then, which was my first proper audition

I didn't even know what to do. And then they gave me the role and sort of my visa and I was on the next plane out

It was three o'clock in the morning for me. So it was kind of a, do I call

Do I not call? Will I sound insane? Should I not? You know, like it was a very back, like I didn't know if I should wait for my manager to wake up or try and wake my manager up

It was it was a massive conundrum. I was like, what do I do? What do I do? But I immediately switched the lights on in the house, as you do

I'm like, Amy, Shima wants me to call her. What do I do? What do I do? I said, you know what, just do it. So I just called her and she picked up first ring

and then she goes, I'm going to send you the script. So she sent the script. I read it. I was

like I love it I think this is going to be super funny And seven o in the morning I got up and Amy rang me and she goes what did you think Like you know what it And so her and I were basically just discussing what the next move from then on

as I'm making pancakes and I'm like, you can't sit down. So it was chaotic, but so exciting

You know, when you go, you get something and you go, this could potentially change my life

This could change everything. And, you know, the whole time I'm still in my pyjamas

I ask everyone, I go, what am I doing here? I didn't even know which camera to look at on set

I was literally a blank slate with no pencil. I had no idea what I was doing

So it was a massive learning curve. Before we start shooting, I go, sorry, am I here

Am I doing that? Because I would just turn my back to stuff. I mean, people think acting is easy

It is not. Like, I accidentally would turn my back to the camera or to the audience

and one of the actors will just slowly turn me and I'm like, thank you

So, yeah, I'm like a puppy that'll still, you know, miss the pad on the floor and pee on the tiles

What people don't know about me is that I don't work out

I enjoy it No I think people you know it it seems real romantic that I got this DM and then got this movie

And but, you know, there's a lot of hard work and not just by me, by a lot of people that goes into getting to this part of it

You know, like this is sort of the reward almost of a lot of hard work by a lot of people in my team to get me to this point, you know, and it's just there is no luck

It's just grabbing opportunities and working really hard at those opportunities as they come up

Look, I mean, their reaction is the same as their reaction to everything else is like, yeah, great

Do we have cream? You know, because I was making pancakes. I think it was the same, like, when I got my Netflix special

the first one, it was, like, Comedians of the World, so you get, like, 20 minutes or 30 minutes

It's a 30-minute special. And I was at home splitting wood because I just got three cubes of wood

delivered for winter, but it was big logs, so I had to get a log splitter

You know, it's a very lesbian story. And I had the log splitter running and it really loud So I had my noise cancelling headphones on and the phone rang So I killed the log splitter answered the phone and there was Netflix offering me a special

And then I, so the kids were there and my brother was there. And I just afterwards, I said, yeah, I'll take it

And I took the headphones off and I said to them as they're playing in the yard

and my brother, I go, guys, guys. And I go, I just got offered a Netflix special

and the kids are like uh-huh do we have to go inside and I said no and my brother goes oh yeah

listen you better fire up that log splitter we only have it for another 45 minutes and I went

okay that's kind of the level of excitement you know they all just go it's just another job yeah

yeah I mean I wasn't rolling cash by any stretch of the imagination you know to go from a really

successful advertising career to doing open mics where you're earning $40 if you're lucky

It was a big shift, but, you know, I just, I didn't mind. I said, I would rather live in a

studio flat and be happy at what I'm doing than live in a three-bedroom house. And then, yeah

I mean, now I'm back to the three-bedroom house, not to brag. Thank you
