Once upon a time in the kingdom of Oo,
0:18
there was a great and powerful ruler
0:21
named Shango was just and fair, and his
0:25
wisdom and courage were renowned
0:27
throughout the land.
0:29
He was a fierce warrior, but also a
0:33
compassionate leader who cared for the
0:36
welfare of his people. Shango saw Ocean,
0:40
the stunning goddess of love and beauty,
0:43
and instantly fell for her. But Ocean
0:47
was already promised to another man,
0:50
Eleua, the trickster god. Eligua was
0:53
known for his cunning and intelligence,
0:56
but he could be a bit of a prankster,
0:59
too. And he had a habit of getting into
1:02
mischief.
1:04
When Shango heard that Elua was the one
1:07
who had stolen Ocean's heart, he wasn't
1:10
deterred. He went to Elwa and challenged
1:13
him to a contest to see who was the most
1:17
powerful of the two. Elwa being the
1:21
trickster that he was agreed to the
1:24
challenge and so it began the battle of
1:28
wits and magic between the trickster god
1:31
and the ruler of oat. The first task was
1:35
to bring the most valuable treasure to
1:38
the altar of ocean. The goddess of
1:41
wealth, Eliguar found a treasure chest
1:45
of gold and jewels and brought it to the
1:49
altar. But Shango was not to be outdone.
1:52
He called upon his powers as the god of
1:55
thunder and lightning. And with a mighty
2:00
clap of thunder, he summoned forth a
2:03
golden crown from the heavens
2:05
themselves. It was a magnificent crown
2:09
encrusted with diamonds and other
2:12
precious stones, and it was worth far
2:15
more than any chest of gold.
2:18
Ocean was impressed by the offerings of
2:21
both Elua and Shango, but she declared
2:25
that Shango had won the first task.
2:29
The next task was to bring the most
2:32
beautiful flower to the altar of Oatala.
2:36
The creator god Elua found a stunning
2:40
flower that blooms just once a year
2:44
thanks to his amazing knowledge of herbs
2:47
and plants. But again, Shango was not to
2:51
be outdone.
2:53
He called upon his powers over the
2:56
weather, and with a gentle breeze he
2:59
brought forth a single white rose that
3:02
was more beautiful than any flower that
3:05
Eligua could have imagined.
3:08
Obatala was impressed by the offerings
3:11
of both gods, but he declared that
3:14
Shango had won the second task. The
3:18
final task was to please the Orishia
3:21
Ogan, the god of iron and war. And this
3:25
was a difficult task as Ogan was a very
3:29
strict and demanding deity.
3:33
Ellea whipped up a healing potion that
3:36
Ogen desperately needed to heal his
3:39
battle wound. But Shango, knowing that
3:42
Ogen valued strength and courage above
3:45
all else, decided to do something truly
3:49
impressive.
3:51
He called upon his powers and
3:53
transformed himself into a magnificent
3:56
lion, the most powerful and feared
3:59
animal in the jungle. And he performed a
4:02
ritual dance that was so mesmerizing
4:05
that Ogan was completely captivated by
4:09
it. When the dance was over, Ogan was in
4:13
awe of Shango's power and declared him
4:16
the winner of the third and final task.
4:20
So Shango had won the contest. But what
4:24
did it get him? Eliguar
4:27
kept his promise and let Ocean be with
4:30
the powerful Sha. And so they were
4:32
married in a grand ceremony that lasted
4:35
for days. There was only one thing that
4:39
neither of them had anticipated. Yamoya
4:43
was already pregnant with Elaguar's
4:46
child. This caused quite a stir in the
4:50
kingdom as it meant that Shango would
4:53
not have any children of his own and
4:56
Elibu would not be able to claim Yoya as
5:00
his wife. However, Shango was a kind and
5:04
merciful ruler, and he took Elibu's
5:07
child under his wing, giving him the
5:09
title of prince.
5:12
And so, the kingdom of Oo continued to
5:16
prosper under the rule of Shango and
5:19
Yema.
5:20
One thing that really stood out to me
5:23
while researching Shango is that he was
5:26
a strong and powerful ruler who was also
5:30
fair and just. He was a fierce warrior
5:34
when he needed to be, but he was also a
5:37
compassionate leader who cared about the
5:40
welfare of his people. I also found it
5:44
interesting that he was a devout
5:46
follower of the arishas and he was known
5:49
for his piety and his commitment to the
5:52
Euraba religion. So if you want to know
