Hey, I'm Wendy and I
0:03
Started this channel to help people in their 50s and beyond live a
0:08
simpler greener healthier life incorporating wellness and clean eating into it and just
0:16
So you can have your best life and perhaps even extend your longevity
0:22
Doing so I lost 48 pounds When I turned 50 I went through a divorce and
0:29
My parents ended up dying within five years of each other and having to deal with that and some other family drama. I
0:38
slowly turned to food and just kind of ate the way I did in my
0:46
20s and 30s and didn't really worry about it and before long I was 48 pounds overweight with
0:54
high blood pressure and My doctor told me that I could have a heart attack at any time and I needed to be on blood pressure meds
1:03
and I started taking the blood pressure meds and it made me very very sick and that on top of
1:12
moving to a different state and Teenagers and Just life It was just it was very hard for me and so I made a decision that I was going to I
1:26
Talked to my doctor and I said the meds are making me sick. What can I do? And he said honestly
1:33
You need to lose 50 pounds and You can do that with diet and exercise
1:42
but you're gonna have to make a commitment and from that day on I made a commitment and I
1:48
Bought a exercise program and I started it the next day and I made myself do it every single day
1:57
It was a 90-day exercise program and I made myself do it every single day for 90 days and I started losing weight
2:04
but I Didn't follow the meal plan and I was still eating
2:10
pretty badly fast food and processed food and All that and so I hired a
2:19
Nutritionist to kind of help me out and I didn't realize you know, just all the processed food
2:26
I was eating was really Harming me because there was so many bad things in it just because it's approved by the Food and Drug Administration
2:37
Doesn't mean that it's good for you or that you should be eating it. So
2:41
There's a lot of foods in the US that they don't they ban in Europe and
2:47
We're still they're still selling it here. So I'm gonna tell you how I did it and
2:55
Hopefully this will help you in making some of these decisions, but
3:01
the first thing I did was I got rid of all my processed food and that's all the boxed foods and
3:09
You know, I didn't eat a single vegetable and now I love vegetables
3:14
But I just I didn't like vegetables at first and I had to like make myself eat them
3:20
And now I really enjoy vegetables not all vegetables, but I still enjoy vegetables
3:27
in fact I'm a vegetarian and I have managed to eat enough fruits and vegetables that it's kept me
3:36
Really healthy over the years so and it's also Kept the weight off as I went through my 50s and 60s or going into my
3:46
60s so processed foods or anything that's in a box sugary drinks sugar
3:54
Desserts and I'm not asking you to eliminate all this but try and eliminate a little bit of it
4:02
Fast food. I have not eaten fast food and 13 years not once so
4:10
Was it hard to give up? I mean people say oh My gosh, how can you give up all these things are so good
4:17
Well, you know when your health is at risk Yield you'll give up some things so you can have better health. I mean, I wanted to be here to see my grandkids, right
4:28
so You will do that. So the first thing I did was I was a big soda drinker
4:36
Drank like diet. Dr. Pepper all the time and I had to give that up
4:42
so I never drank water and I ended up getting rid of all the sugary drinks all the sweet teas and
4:52
having to completely Change there and it did take some getting used to
5:00
You know, sometimes you have to sacrifice to be better So that's what I did I got rid of the soda not only was it unhealthy for me
5:11
But it was loaded with caffeine and I had a caffeine addiction
5:16
That just really needed to go away. So I made this commitment and
5:21
The fast food. I mean honestly, it saves you so much money preparing food at home
5:27
yeah, preparing food at home is a drag and it's Not fun, I
5:33
fortunately have a husband that prepares all our meals, so That's really nice. But I
5:41
Can do it too. It's just that That's what he does. So I'm very appreciative of that but I
5:50
digress But the clean foods is whole fruits and vegetables Whole grains and there's so many recipes
5:59
I Actually have a Pinterest site that you want to check out because I have saved
6:04
So many recipes and I have them I have meal prep. I have clean eating. I have clean desserts
6:10
Clean cookies clean appetizers. I've got all kinds of Things on my Pinterest site so I will link that in the description below so you can go and check it out
6:21
but there's lots of Recipes there and honestly, these recipes are so good that you are not gonna miss some of the things in fact
6:32
one of the things I did over the years was I pretty much eliminated sugar from my diet and I didn't think I'd ever be able to do that, but
6:43
Sugar so bad for you It Just it leads to so many different diseases that I just wanted it out of my system
6:54
once you give some of this stuff up you just get increased energy and
7:00
mental clarity and just Overall well-being my doctor actually said that it looks like I was aging in reverse. So
7:10
That's kind of nice and what you could do to start out is you could keep a food diary of everything that you eat and
7:17
When you look back through it, you're gonna see some things that you can eliminate from your diet
7:23
But you you want to do everything gradually. You don't want to go cold turkey on all of this
7:28
That's for sure and it took me a while. It took me a while to really
7:34
make a commitment and While I was first trying to lose my 48 pounds
7:41
I was able to do it because I stuck to this exercise program and it was so important to me to be healthy
7:51
That I just said I'm gonna do it and I'm not gonna look back
7:55
Now I know that's hard for a lot of you to do. And so if you just do
8:02
bite-sized pieces of it it will help you so much and You know, I can give you healthy swaps from
8:12
Eating a bag of Doritos, for instance. They have clean brain-free chips
8:20
of Siete and you can buy them at Whole Foods or Fresh Thyme any type of store like that grocery store
8:30
They even have them at Kroger But you can get chips that are very similar to Doritos, but they have
8:39
Whole Foods in them instead of all the chemical junk that they put in
8:45
to these cheap snack items Took me a while like I read labels like crazy and anything that had added sugars or unhealthy fats
8:56
trans fats and Artificial ingredients I just got rid of the artificial ingredients are made in a
9:05
chemistry lab so I Eliminated those completely if you'd like me to talk more about that
9:14
Please let me know in the description and I will be glad to share my experience of that with you
9:20
But there's just so many things that you can do like when you go in the grocery store
9:25
You just stay out of the middle of the grocery store and shop the perimeter, right? I mean the perimeter is
9:33
fruits and vegetables followed by meats followed by dairy and You just stay out of the middle where all the processed foods are a lot of times
9:46
We will do a lot of meal prepping for the week So like a I made up a batch of overnight oats and portioned amount into
9:55
Containers in the refrigerator so they were ready to go now I've got a lot of those on my Pinterest page and you will need to go there to check them out
10:05
But it's very simple to do if you just take some time on a Saturday or Sunday
10:10
You can meal prep a lot of things that you can just pull out of your fridge and heat them up
10:15
And they're ready to go there's also meal prep services to if you're too busy to do any of that they're more costly than if you
10:26
Do it yourself? obviously, but you've got to have whatever works and there are some meal prep services that are very clean and healthy and
10:36
Overcoming challenges eating out eating out is a challenge for sure so we have to kind of plan the restaurant ahead of time and
10:45
A lot of times we'll look for a really healthy type restaurant or a vegetarian restaurant something like that
10:53
but if by chance we're meeting friends or having to go to a
10:59
restaurant that is a national chain or something like that you can get a salad and
11:06
Hear it out there But we just don't spend a lot of time eating out and it does save quite a bit of money over the years
11:15
