Fish and freaks, welcome back to the channel
0:20
I am glad you're here. I just want to start this video off by just saying thank you for being with me the many
0:27
years that I have been doing YouTube and fishing. I am so excited this year, as I am every year, when things really start to kick off
0:39
You know, we have winter and there's some winter dabbling fishing, but this week right
0:44
here, this is when it really gets going for me. So I'm actually in East Texas today, which is kind of where my channel started and where
0:55
I started filming and it's just a good place to be this time of year because the spawn
1:01
and fish movement starts a little earlier out in East Texas and South Texas
1:07
So we're going to be traveling around over the next few videos. We're going to be going to a few different lakes and doing our normal truck camping deal
1:13
And you guys are going to come along with me for my passion for bass fishing and crappie
1:18
fishing and the adventure and all that. But today we're going to focus on a lure, sort of a forgotten lure in my opinion, a
1:27
boomer bait, and that is the lipless crankbait. Oh yeah, you hear it coming
1:34
You know what it is. So I want to take you guys through, just talk about this bait a little bit, because I feel
1:42
like with everything forward facing and focusing on plastics and all that stuff, sometimes
1:48
we just forget about some old school baits that still catch big eggs
1:54
I'm at a lake that I've never fished before. I just walked down to the water's edge and I saw a piece of hydrilla floating there
2:03
That's about all I need to know. I need to know the time of year and see hydrilla and this is coming out
2:10
That color right there is called cashcraw, but basically anything red, there's a whole
2:16
debate about why red this time of year, but all I know is they eat it
2:21
There's going to be some fish that are going to eat this, hopefully a big one. I'm going to talk about some of the reasons why I think this bait is really effective
2:30
and why you need to be throwing it, especially this time of year
2:42
So normally when I'm going bass fishing and I find hydrilla in Texas, I am so excited
2:48
Just any little bit of hydrilla is like, I just know there's life
2:52
There's hydrilla gorillas in there. But just launching on a new lake, never fished here before, it looks like there is grass everywhere
3:01
I mean, when there's grass at the ramp, it's usually everywhere. So then it's, well, where do you find fish in all that grass
3:10
It's always, always the problem. So when I'm fishing lipless crankbaits and other moving baits, like we're going to do
3:17
I try to look for just something that's a little different. A ditch is, uh, is really key
3:25
And I know that's really big in East Texas, but it's, it's big anywhere, honestly, a ditch
3:30
It's kind of like a, a natural little highway. It's like a game trail for fish
3:39
Another thing is bait, obviously, you know, if you're seeing bait in an area that could
3:43
be a good place to throw that lipless crankbait. But the unobvious one is just warmer water temps, shallower water that will have that
3:54
good grass in it that warms up quickly. Sometimes that is just enough to hold the fish
3:59
So there's a lot of different factors. If we're in really thick grass, like we do have here, like I'm just seeing walls of grass
4:08
on the electronics. I like to go with a braid and this is a 40 pound right here
4:20
The lower the diameter in your braid, the better it's going to cut through the grass
4:26
Fluorocarbon, I do like it if the grass is kind of sparse
4:30
If I'm not having to get really stuck in it a lot, then I will, I would go with the mono
4:37
for fluoro. But if it's really thick, I like the braid. You're fishing this so fast anyways, that this is going to be a purely a reaction deal
4:49
The fish aren't going to really have time to check out the braid
4:54
The reel, either way, I like high speed, just get a high speed, like at least a seven
5:02
But if you can get an eight, you know, eight to one, that's fantastic too
5:07
And the rod for both setups, this is a reaction glass rod, but honestly, one of my favorite
5:15
rods ever for doing this is our green reaction rod. You know, that's a hundred dollar rod
5:24
It's a seven two. That action is perfect. It's literally perfect. There's some niceties about this glass that I won't really get into, but just know that
5:39
you want something kind of medium powered. And the whole goal here is I want to be able to cover the water
5:48
It really helps to do most of the action with your reel, as opposed to me just doing this
5:55
the whole time. I could do that. And when I get a really big patch of grass and I want to rip through it, I will do this
6:04
Move my whole body to the side, sweep the rod. But almost all of my strikes that I get on a lipless are coming when I stop the bait
6:22
So I've noticed that over the years. So how I fish this bait now is I will start and stop it
6:32
I never just straight retrieve it. I'm always stopping it. And it gives the fish a chance to, if they are following it or it's coming by, it's just
6:42
a little, it's a change. It's just a little change and it triggers them
6:47
And a lot of times they will just hit it like a jig when that thing stops
6:50
Full line twitch, boom. Like a big one just will gyrate the rod
6:56
It's insane how hard they hit it. Even though I haven't caught a fish yet, I'm pretty optimistic
7:02
Just got to figure out little pieces here. This color I'm throwing is called Sriracha Craw
7:10
I like this one when this water is dirty like this. What do we got going on here
7:15
We got a little tangle there. Lost focus, lost track. This is where I think a lot of people put this bait down
7:25
They think it's just a straight retrieve. They'll try it a little bit if there's some grass, but don't give it enough time
7:36
A lot of people will get frustrated with, I'm like, oh yeah, I got this weird grass
7:46
There's certain kinds of grasses that are certainly better for fishing this, but you
7:51
don't even have to have grass. You can have a straight up Rocky Bank and throw this thing and fish it the exact same way
8:03
You just need to be very cognizant of what your lure is doing
8:07
And if you use that technique that I'm showing you guys, it's pretty easy to stay in tune
8:13
with it. Got some little piglets on the shoreline. I hope they hear me now
8:21
We better run. We better go. Go little buddy. Let's get out of here
8:25
Oh, I didn't even see that third one. See ya, oinky. So I've been out on the lake for approximately 10 minutes
8:38
Since I've never been to this lake before, I don't know what the normal lake levels are
8:43
I don't know if this is like new stuff in the water or I don't know, but it looks like
8:51
a good swim jig, chatterbait thing. I am excited about what is going to happen this week
8:59
We're going to catch some fish. You guys need to stay tuned. I kind of like to think about the hydrilla bed as a, it's like carpet, you know, I'm
9:07
trying to, as soon as I feel that my bait has lost tension, meaning it's touched something
9:14
down there, it's no longer falling, I am moving that reel quickly because it's like shag carpet
9:23
and I don't want it to sink farther than an inch into that stuff or it's really going
9:29
to bury. And you can definitely use a forward facing for this too
9:33
I mean, this bait shows up really well on forward and it really helps to see, you know
9:40
the grass line and the little changes. And maybe you'll see a depression that you wouldn't see just regular fishing and you
9:47
could let it drop into that, that little depression and all that stuff
9:52
I've done that before too, but there's just something really nice about not using it
9:58
And I'm able to cover a ton of water with this bait and not have to, I'm not sitting
10:04
there tracking it or anything. I'm just, I'm just working. I'm burning calories
10:07
I'm out here burning calories, ready to get ripped by a toad
10:12
I want to get clapped back by a toad baby. I don't know what this is
10:17
That's not what we're looking for. That's like an old pad stem. That's kind of what that looks like
10:24
Which could be good. Another, I don't know, could be good right now
10:30
I just don't like my treble hooks in it. First fish of the day on the old Chatter Swimmy
10:43
A little flavorful combo right there. We'll let that fish go. First clue
10:50
There's a lot of debris down there. It's not good for the lipless
10:55
This is, this is great for swim jigs and the chatters right now
11:03
Big pad fields with timber. That's what we got going on here
11:14
There's one. We got him. Oh, he hit it kind of weird
11:20
Wasn't even close to the tree. Not even close. Little male bass
11:29
Little male bass. Liking that, liking that orange on the Happy Trailer
11:36
That one sucked it really good. So I've had three fish so far
11:43
None of them big. Just little males in the old chatter swim
11:49
So I just need a change of water, man. I need to move somewhere
11:55
It's like sort of confusing. I like what it's doing. I just need to, I think, cover some more water, get in the right spot
12:02
You know, if all those were three to five pounders, I'd be honkering down back in here
12:06
But just some males moving up. Doesn't get me too excited. I'm going to look at the map
12:11
I'm going to look at the map, try to find some other areas that we can throw these moving baits
12:19
Connect on a large one. Got to sniff a big one. Spot number two of the day, guys
12:45
So, you know, we started off, we're just kind of getting the lines wet
12:49
Then we went up into a shallow creek. I was liking it
12:54
I was kind of vibing with it. Literally vibing, five jigs. And I just came under a bridge
13:01
As soon as I got under here, this shallow area, I was like, man, this is a good spot
13:06
Came under a bridge. As soon as I got under here, this shallow area
13:14
61.6, water. Alerts. Alerts are going off right now. There's going to be some fish up shallow in here
13:23
I know it. Here we go, boys. Oh, there's a big one
13:37
Biggin' on a lipless. Oh, yeah. I actually don't think he is hooked in the mouth anymore, or he's got it really far deep in the mouth, but I didn't see it
13:54
Oh, I think he's got it really far down in his face. Mmm, that's the one we're looking for there
14:02
Oh, my gosh, it's gone. It's a gone. It's a gone. That's what I was feeling on that braid
14:10
That's a really cool bite. I'm sorry I did not get that bite on camera
14:15
There's the old five, six pounder right there, boys. Clutch is gone
14:24
I'm telling you, big bite. It's good. It's good for a big bite, man
14:31
All right, I'm going to hang this guy on the stringer for a second
14:42
I came back in this little cut, and it didn't look good at first up there flipping, but I wanted to go farther back, see if the water got any warmer
14:52
It's 61 right here, and I saw that there was grass actually up closer to the reeds than when I originally started, which is good
15:02
That's what I wanted. I want a little holding place before they go to the bank
15:06
They're not quite on the bank yet, and I'm embarrassed to say this
15:10
The camera didn't catch it, thankfully, actually. I was lifting that bait when I got close to the boat
15:17
I've been telling you guys how I fish it with the reel, but I was just kind of close to the boat, and I was lifting it, and I was kind of looking off
15:25
I wasn't really paying attention, and I looked back, and I couldn't tell if the boat was moving towards the line or if the line was coming towards me
15:34
I just lifted up, and the fish had it, and the fish ate it on the stop completely down the hatch, so I'd love to see it
15:43
I don't have a live well on the Crispy Collector, so I don't see this every day, but we are just putting a big 6-pounder on our stringer here
15:53
It's kind of wild, but look at that. Just a big old slobber knocker right there, baby
16:02
This bait just still catches big ones. Interesting bite. I'd love to see you suck it in like that
16:10
You're no longer on the stringer. I'm switching to the Vibe Jig
16:16
Gear-wise, I like somewhere between 6.5, 7.5. Gear ratio reel just kind of keeps that nice, steady pace
16:26
I'm throwing this one on 20-pound line. 20-pound line and the Green Series Reaction Rod are absolutely amazing
16:34
It's just perfect. I'm throwing a half-ounce Blaze Orange Happy Trailer on the back just to give it that little pop in this water color
16:47
I'm getting a little bit of fade-off on our Hydrilla. I'm not in love with it
16:52
Let me back out and do another little run here. Crispy's doing great, guys
16:57
Crispy's doing a great day. It's 5 to 10. This lake is actually pretty big
17:04
What I'm liking about this is it's kind of forcing me to fish a little differently
17:13
My instinct today, at first, I saw some bait balls and things out in some deeper water
17:20
I was like, you know, get out there and throw a jerkbait and an A-rig and stuff like that
17:25
Then I thought, you know what? It's hot. Spring's coming. It's not spring, but it's coming
17:32
It's hot today. I want to get the Crispy up shallow. That's where it's made to do greatness
17:39
So, I don't know. I'm kind of digging it right now. Honestly, this next few days and months set up great for this boat
17:49
I'm going to be taking it into some shallow water places and fishing with it
17:54
There's just something refreshing about getting a shallow water bite versus all winter
18:02
You can fish offshore the entire year if you want to. Forward facing is just so popular
18:08
Obviously, I do it. It's a great way to catch fish, but I don't know
18:14
I'm just getting back to basics here and loving it. Could I go find a new or used boat tomorrow and fish out of it
18:21
I think I'm going to ride the Crispy for a minute. I'm just going to do it
18:28
I kind of want to challenge myself with that. Honestly, that fish I just caught is probably my PB bass out of here
18:40
Over six pounds, it's probably my PB bass out of the Crispy
18:45
I'll tell you what. We're going to get out here with this lipless. We're going to get out here in the middle
18:52
I almost fell in. I apologize. Go catch a big. Have a good day
18:59
See you, buddy. I was just talking to Lunker's TV. We were comparing notes there
19:03
I thought I had a fish on. That's the nice thing about being in a squad
19:12
I've just got guys fishing all over the place right now. I get a feel of the general fishing, what it's like
19:21
Just compare notes. It's pretty nice. There's one. He cracked on it. Good
19:29
It ain't big. It certainly did give it the old smack-a-roo
19:40
Little buddy. Little buck. This is crazy. You get these little bucks
19:47
This is literally where I caught that six pounder. On the old Lipola
19:56
That's a healthy one. Really healthy fish right there. That's a future big one for sure
20:05
Got the nice genetics. That one was... Same stuff, guys. Four to six
20:12
We're hooked up, guys. We got a good one. I literally just picked up this bait
20:23
I threw it in something that has been bugging me all day
20:29
Oh my gosh. That's gone. That's a gone. Down the hatch
20:41
Come here. It's not a giant, but it's a really nice fish
20:51
Four pounder. It's a gone. I'd fish probably 20 minutes without a bite on the Lipola
21:01
I was getting hung in this vegetation. I don't even know what it is
21:06
Honestly, I've never really encountered it before. It just looks like salad
21:12
I was like, you know what? I've thrown up there with a Lipola a bunch of times and gotten caught in it
21:17
It's been frustrating because it looks like nice, lush, good cover. Picked up the Vibe Jig and came through it and boom
21:25
Literally first cast with that. Really nice fish. We'll let it go
21:30
See my dude. Look at this
21:43
Just bright green veg. It's beautiful looking. I'm sure it's really healthy for the lake
21:50
It looks great. Love to see stuff like this in lakes. Wish every lake had that kind of shallow vegetation
21:58
Same depth. 4 to 6 foot. 4 to 8 foot. Reeling that right over the top
22:03
Guys, let me also explain something about this trailer. This Happy Trailer
22:10
It's called the Happy Trailer. This bait is basically designed to be pretty one-dimensional and it's to go on a bait like this
22:20
A vibrating jig. That's what it's designed for. If you put this on a spinner bait or a swim jig, it's really not going to be that nice
22:30
A drop shot maybe would look kind of cool. Maybe put it on a jig head
22:34
I don't know. We really made this to go on the backs of these
22:40
It's perfectly fit for it and it vibrates. Absolutely beautiful. It's omnidirectional
22:48
It's a fantastic bait. If you don't have any of those, it's a good one. Use that promo code LFG
22:52
We're going to change areas for a little evening strike. Then it's time to go camping
23:04
Alright, last stretch of the day here that I'm going to fish. I got lily pad stems
23:09
They're on the lead end to the way back. We're about halfway in the creek
23:13
The math just makes sense. For everywhere else we've caught fish today, we should get a bite here
23:22
I'm going to vibe jig it. If the hydrilla looks present, then I will also throw the lipless crankbait
23:33
Backlash. First cast. It's my first backlash of the day, really. This bank is pretty interesting because it's real flat
23:56
This whole thing is just lily pad stems in the summer. You know, for a mile
24:05
Just flatty McFlat. I'm going to turn my electronics around where I can see a little bit
24:11
Oh, I got one. I literally got one. It's a big one, too
24:16
I came out of a pad stem and just caught a big one. I came out of a pad stem and he rocked it
24:25
Yeah, buddy. You're strong. Look at that. Isn't that fun times
24:35
Boat sling. In the crispy. There's a nice three and a halfer
24:45
Yes, sir. I love it when a plan just comes together. Barely hooked right there
24:53
I was just in a pad stem. I was kind of pulling out
24:57
Had a backlash. Boom. There she was. There we go. Got a nice little sack here
25:05
Another thing I'll say. One of the final tips. We started out with the lipless
25:11
Really want you guys to not forget about that lipless. As you've seen today, it has caught the biggest fish
25:19
But it shines when the water temperature is a little cooler. This water is 61, 62
25:27
This is almost like soft plastic started getting good. Your swim baits and little underspins
25:35
Throw in your Texas rigs and all that stuff. The lipless crankbait bite I feel like is really hot
25:43
when the water is high 40s, low 50s. 55 is really good
25:54
Once you start getting in the 60s, it's still okay. You can still catch them on it
26:00
But that's when I think the Vibe jig gets better. That's when a swim jig and a spinner bait
26:09
That's when those things really get good. One of the things that I always see every year
26:17
When the fish's lips are red. I'll start seeing that when it's cold
26:21
Throw a red crankbait. The sun is getting low. The bugs are coming out
26:27
It's time to head back to camp. We're going to have some good dinner tonight
26:31
We've got to re-spool some lines. We've got to get ready for tomorrow
26:35
We're going on a little trail. A little trail of big bass
26:39
Come with me. Come with me. Let's catch Sally together. Old Sally
26:48
She's lurking out here somewhere. It's her time. It's almost a full moon
26:59
Well, just backing into my little spot right here. We've got a mystery on our hands, folks
27:06
I put my cooler with all my food out on the picnic table
27:11
It is gone. It seems I've got some new neighbors. I'm about to walk over here and ask them if they've seen anybody that took this thing
27:19
They literally had all my food for the week. I had backstrap in there. Rice
27:27
Various other goods. That's very rude. That's very rude. If someone took my cooler, that's not cool, man
27:35
Okay, just confirmed with my fellow dangler. My neighbor. You know, E.T
27:42
The guy with the machete. Chopping down a deal. Tying up his john boat
27:48
You never know how that's going to go. But really nice guy
27:52
He said, hey, park ranger come by here about two hours ago. Got your cooler
27:57
I was like, I wonder why they did that. I reserved the spot
28:01
Anyway, somebody has got my cooler. It was stolen. We've got to go investigate
28:07
Before these rangers head out. They were on a walk. They were just heading back up there
28:13
Thank you so much. I appreciate it. This is the time where no one wants to be bothered
28:19
They're going on their walks and they're chilling out. It's like, you just took my dinner
28:25
I wanted to come back after a nice day of dangling. Crack a cold pop
28:31
That was in my cooler. And have a little backstrap and rice
28:35
It's just fun being on these little fishing adventures with you guys. I like going throughout the day
28:41
And talking through the fishing equation. When I'm learning something. I'm talking about it
28:51
These other little side adventures. I feel like these things are what I meet people on the water or wherever
28:59
These are the things they remember. Remember that time? That crazy time
29:05
Maintenance shed. Here we go. Recovered. The cooler. They actually said someone was eyeballing it
29:15
And it was a preemptive strike. To take it. And protect it from the ones that were being a little snooty
29:23
You never know. I've always been really fortunate. At every state park in Texas. Really
29:31
But you never know. You never know where the criminals may lurk
29:39
Alright guys. The batteries are on charge. We got our cooler back
29:45
We're going to be cooking on the tailgate. Sleeping inside of the truck tonight
29:49
You know the drill. You've seen me do it before. Keeping it simple
29:55
We're just out here sleeping with the bass. What we talked about this morning
30:01
Half ounce clutch. This one is in Sriracha Craw. Get you something
30:07
We got them available. And if you're local you can even go up to our crumb store
30:11
And we got them in there. GooganSquad.com Don't forget to use my promo code LFG
30:17
And while you're at it. Get you some of these babies. These are nasty
30:23
That color by the way. It's hot. Today is like. It was kind of transitioning
30:31
It's getting geared up for bass to be on beds. Great day today by the way
30:35
A lake I've never been to. Didn't get a ton of bites
30:39
But to be able to catch a six. Catch a four. Get some nice threes
30:45
Just catch some nice decent fish. I can't complain. Next few videos we're grinding out here
30:51
We're going to be on the bass. We're going to be on the crappie as well
30:55
But we're doing crispy type stuff. Alright I got some reels to re-spool
30:59
For tomorrow morning. That's going to be next video. Stay tuned for that
31:05
I'm about to go cook some deer steaks. Crack a cold pop
31:09
Enjoy a nice sunset. And I'll see you guys. Mañana. Next video
31:17
See you soon. Music. Music. Music. Music. Music. Music. Music
