We asked ChatGPT the top 10 job interview questions for the first interview round.
Question 3: Why do you want to work here
We share our thoughts about it from both interviewee's and interviewer's perspectives, the suitability of it as an interview question, and the impossible task applicants are faced with -- faking a passion for the company or an interest in the often inaccurate job specs -- in order to avoid the obvious answer. Why is applying for a job because you have the required skill set and you want a better salary NEVER the right answer?

We're doing the top 10 interview questions according to chat GPT, which is presumably
0:08
what we're all going to be asked next week. Number three, oh yeah, to the time of the
0:13
great on take timer. Number three is why do you want to work here? That one's also
0:22
tricky because I understand that they have that element of going, did you do your research
0:29
Have you gone through the entire website and all the press releases we've done about how fantastic, awesome how company is
0:39
And the honest answer usually is, I find if you apply for a job, it's not because of the company, it's because the job spec sounds like it's something you might enjoy doing
0:54
in my case the weight is written sounds like it hasn't been written by a bunch of cocks
1:02
so it's like you sounded interesting on paper I think in my cases usually I'll say I'd like to be
1:14
paid yeah I think I think for most people the answer is largely I looked at the job spec I reckon I can probably just about black doing that for a living and the money looks okay
1:26
But if you actually say that at interview, no one's going to hide. It's just going to be no, what's it
1:32
Where's your passion and your love and your drive for it? Not in the office
1:37
And it's different because I suppose it depends what all you're going to work for. Because say if you're going for..
1:43
So for example, I had a friend who, um, senior technical architect, great guy, doing an interesting job, good money, but he wanted to get into, um, sustainable kind of businesses and, um, predicting, not sustainable, that's a wrong phrase
2:03
He wanted to get into sort of a tech for good where you are predicting natural disasters and that's really what he wanted to do
2:11
So he went and got a different job at a pay cut with the idea that he'd eventually move on and get to this point of going to this different business
2:20
So what was driving him was that was a stepping stone to get into tech to learn more in that particular field so that later on he could move to something else
2:30
So for him I guess why he wanted to work there was because that was his next point But I think that tends to be the exception Most people you speak to you aren like that realistically why do you want to work here it either fully remote or
2:44
it's not far from home it kind of looks okay and the money's all right so I can pay my bills
2:49
yeah I find it it's a little bit unfair to expect people to be passionate about their job
2:55
their job because essentially that's not where you put your passion in yeah and also if it is you're going to be really depressed when I think I think I
3:04
You may. So some jobs and some businesses you can get really passionate about and really interested in and care about what you do. I know I've had that quite a few jobs, but I don't think you know that before you start there until you actually start working there. You don't understand it. You know, you might go for the most exciting company, the most exciting industry. Why do you want to work here? Because I love computer games. I really want to write them. And then you spend your whole career texture mapping models and you really just hate it after the first three months
3:34
Or you really love it and you're really passionate about it. You're not going to know until you do it
3:39
And so why do you want to work here? I don't know yet. It's the honest
3:44
It's either. For me, there's two honest answers for most people. There's either, well, three
3:49
either it happens to be some niche company I've always wanted to work for. I'm super excited
3:54
Or the money right Or I don know yet And therefore anything else is kind of you probably blagging it again And so what the point of asking
4:06
Yeah, I find it really is a silly question. For me, I kind of think with interviews
4:11
I do do tech interviews more than general interviews. I've done both, but you've got like 60 to 90 minutes
4:19
depending on what you can get away with with the recruitment company, you recruiters
4:24
to speak to someone and understand if they can do the work you do
4:29
if they're going to sort of be comfortable in the job, and if you're going to be happy working together
4:33
And therefore, everything you ask should be optimized around gaining that understanding
4:41
And for me, why do you want to work here? Isn't that? That's a filling question
4:46
Oh, yeah, that's a place. Yeah, that's a place. Yeah, this is a useless question, I think
4:54
It's a question where nobody can be fully honest. So we might actually, I reckon we've only got about five minutes over time on that one
5:03
So why do you want to work it? Because I want to talk a lot. So that's that
5:10
So that's a question, what was that, four or five? Three. Three even. Why do I want to work it
5:15
Not because of my maths
