Boat life = boat work, amiright? Just because our catamaran is brand new, doesn't mean we don't need to spend a lot of time doing repairs, maintenance and tweaks. In fact, Ruby Rose 2 needs a lot of setting up, so we're actually doing more boat work than normal. But what better place to get caught up on all our boat jobs, right? Koh Phangan is so chill and beautiful and the perfect place to base ourselves while we get Ruby Rose 2 perfected.

Good morning everyone
0:24
Welcome to this week's episode
0:37
We are in Koh Panyan, which is a very beautiful island, just near Koh Samui
0:42
It's a very beautiful location. We are anchored with two other sea winds
0:46
believe it or not, a 1600 and a 1260. I don't know what the chances of that are
0:52
but I think they're pretty slim. There's no other boats anchored in this bay, apart from the three of us
0:57
And we had quite the hassle trying to get anchored. We had no less than seven attempts to anchor in this bay
1:04
so that really had us kind of doubting our abilities. Not the best start, but we made it
1:10
We finally got the anchor set and we're very glad we did because this is a very, very beautiful little bay
1:16
It's quintessentially Thai, I think. It's very laid-back kind of vibe here
1:22
And I think that it's right up our street and I have a funny feeling we'll be staying for a while
1:27
I'm Teresa, this is Nick, and this is Ruby Rose 2, our floating home
1:32

So today we are going to go ashore in a little while
1:50
and hire a bike and we're going to explore some of this beautiful island by bike
2:07
Oh, you got a little... Are you just going to go for a little burn and just have a little..
2:11
We're going for a burn. That's what I'm saying. Yes, we're going for a burn. We're going to go for a little burn
2:21
Oh my God. So we're here in the village and I'm not actually sure what this beach is called
2:27
I'll put it on the screen down below. Just a little street with shops and restaurants
2:32
and bars and massage parlours, of course, little mini markets, shops, laundry
2:40
And first stop is a smoothie. What would you like? Sawadee ka
2:45
One pineapple mango banana. One banana and coconut please. So we came back to the dinghy, which was half afloat
3:07
So obviously the tides come in while we've been gone because it's on quite a steep decline
3:13
The water has come over the stern and we've got some water in the back of the dinghy
3:17
And yeah, it's a bit of a pickle because we can't bring it further up the beach
3:23
because it's just too heavy. We can't anchor it because Nick doesn't trust the dinghy anchor
3:28
It was like literally just a dinghy anchor that he found in Bataya
3:32
Ideally we'd have, do what lot boats do, actually, anyway, and have a cage anchor and an anchor
3:41
two anchors, one going in each direction. But we can't find a second anchor
3:46
So it's all a bit of a pickle. Hello
3:57
In today's episode of boat jobs in exotic location. One of the winches is loose
4:03
There's a... I'll show you. So this is our... Oh, sorry. Oh, for f***s sakes
4:09
This is our Harkin two-speed winch. There's too much movement in there
4:14
There's too much movement in a winch like that. Is that the only winch that has movement like that
4:18
Yeah, the rest are fine. So there's obviously something loose in there
4:22
so I need to pull this all apart and have a little look. I need to read the manual
4:35
It's a very, very warm day today. I've got my trusty Bunnings hat on
4:39
Probably look ridiculous. But it's very hot. Very hot. Alright, that's what it is
4:59
So it's the bolts that hold this in place. So I'm not sure if these need to be torqued
5:03
but they're a little loose. See how much loose that is? F***ing hell
5:08
Yeah, that's terrible. They're basically not tightened at all. Look how much give is in this
5:13
Yeah, that's pretty much the same. Now I need to see if there's any rating for these
5:21
to be torqued. So I'm just going to hand tighten them. Okay, that's tight
5:33
We're just checking the way this runs. So see how this works, like this
5:42
So currently this is feeding this into the cockpit, yeah? Which is the way I like it
5:48
You happy with that? It was feeding back and I think it needs to feed
5:52
into the cockpit. We're going to have to do a little bit of
6:00
We're going to have to have torque ratings for these. There's no any way of torquing them, actually
6:04
So it's going to have to be hand tightened. There you go
6:08
Well done. It's a bit wobbly isn't it? It's a bit wobbly inside
6:18
It's a bit wobbly inside. A little bit of wobble in there
6:42
This one doesn't wobble? I mean it's only the plastic top that's wobbling
6:48
Everything else is secure. My old winch wobbled by the way so it never caused a problem
6:54
That would have eventually just come off or we'd have bent the screws
6:58
That would have been f***ed. A successful job on Ruby Rose 2. Yay
7:04
And I didn't even take that long, that's a minor error. Well there you go, two things that never f***ing happen
7:14
Hello, how's it going? Hello, how's it going? Hello, how's it going
7:20
Hello, how's it going? Hello, how's it going? Hello, how's it going
7:26
Hello, how's it going? Hello, how's it going? Hello, how's it going
7:32
Hello, how's it going? Hello, how's it going? Hello, how's it going
7:38
Hello, how's it going? Hello, how's it going? Hello, how's it going
7:44
Hello, how's it going? Hello, how's it going? Hello, how's it going
7:50
Hello, how's it going? Hello, how's it going? Hello, how's it going
7:56
Hello, how's it going? Hello, how's it going? Hello, how's it going
8:02
Hello, how's it going? Hello, how's it going? Hello, how's it going
8:08
Hello, how's it going? I'm clearly not in the swing of things
8:12
I still have one part of my mind in Saigon. I've got a very big part of my mind
8:18
on all the little jobs I have to do to get this boat, not right
8:22
but set up. I think it's very important to differentiate between warranty and set up. Example
8:30
we're pretty, not remote, but we're remote for cruisers. There's not a lot of cruisers that come to these areas
8:36
And so we find ourselves in a position where we managed to procure a dinghy anchor
8:40
And I found one in Koh Samui and I'm like, what did you do
8:44
I found a dinghy anchor and I found some galvanized chain. So that was all great
8:48
But then it transpired that a lot of these bays you can't bring the dinghy up on the beach
8:52
The dinghy is too heavy. It's not a lightweight dinghy with a bloody centre console
8:56
And so for the two of us to drag it up the beach, the wheels are useless by the way
9:00
The dinghy wheels are on sand. You might as well just put some whizzlers down there
9:04
So the best thing to do for us is to kedge off. So we had to find another dinghy anchor
9:09
And luckily there's a sea width 1600 and he happened to have four dinghy anchors
9:13
or something. So yeah, he gave us a dinghy anchor. I did offer to pay for it
9:19
So we now have a second kedge anchor for our dinghy. So we're slowly getting there
9:25
And now we're getting a coconut smoothie. Thank you. There you go. Cheers
9:33
Here's to a day of not that many disasters but a lot of tiredness
9:41
So are you starting to feel like we're getting on top of things now? I think if we can get that screecher up
9:47
I'll feel happier. Okay, this morning we are going to attempt to put the screecher
9:55
back up. Okay. Let's cross our fingers and hope this goes smoothly
10:01
The last three or four nights I've been worrying about the screecher getting it back up
10:05
And the thing is the last time we tried to get this back up
10:09
we had Nicky and Jason, which is four of us and it was a shit show
10:13
A lot of you are going to ask, well why did you take it down? What happened? I'm the skipper, therefore it's my fault
10:17
But it was just a complete misunderstanding of how this sail furls
10:23
And when we had Mark on board he did it, like obviously he runs Doyle
10:27
so he did it like, you know, he's super good at this sort of thing. What we did is we unfurled it
10:31
and then when we furled it we did what Mark did, which was to put the furling
10:35
line on the winch, but we just didn't have enough tension on the lazy sheet
10:39
and what happened was as it kind of went spinning around the drum
10:43
the lazy sheet got caught in the sail and it kind of like just turned itself into
10:49
like it knotted itself up so it couldn't move either way. So we just
10:53
dropped the sail, bagged it. Once we bagged it, we looked at the halyard and were like
10:57
the halyard is just tied up in knots. It's literally just turned itself and we spent a long time
11:01
getting that done. Because the whole point is it's a 2 to 1 halyard and the closer it gets to the mast
11:05
head, the more the twist is getting it and the more resistance you get. So
11:09
if you've got more than 2 or 3 turns, you can't raise the halyard or the sail through the halyard. So yeah
11:13
that was kind of some problem we had to undo. Completely user error. Nothing to do with the
11:17
boat, nothing to do with anything apart from us or me. So Therese and I
11:21
have been trying to work out how to get it back up and it became apparent
11:25
that the 2 to 1 halyard was really badly twisted. It had 6 or 7 turns in it
11:30
and we just couldn't get the turns out. So the more we tried to raise the halyard
11:34
with just a line on it and the closer it got to the mast head, the more it would twist and turn
11:38
So we spent, I don't know, 4 or 5 days just getting the twists out of it. It's actually
11:42
a really complicated thing because you're never quite sure what to do and it's all about tensions
11:46
and how the blocks turn. And then we had a lot of things this morning that we were trying to
11:50
make sure that if it went wrong, we had a way out. We had the engines
11:54
running. We had everything kind of laid out. We had sail ties. Thankfully
11:58
it actually went up pretty straightforwardly didn't it Therese? Yeah. Yeah, it went in
12:02
and so we got it up. It was really very baggy. Got quite a few twists
12:16
Oh, it's untwisting. Good. And then we just unfurled it a little bit and then
12:20
refurled it and yeah, we're pretty pleased. That's been worrying me for a while
12:24
because we have to sail back to Pattaya which is a couple of hundred miles
12:28
and realistically we need this sail so now that that's up I feel a lot better and Therese and I
12:34
have made the executive decision that we're actually going to take the day off
12:38
I think there's some minor chores around the boat I need to do. I want to
12:42
do some random stuff like get the dinghy at Dango clean. It's got like half of the Sahara desert
12:46
in it. We're going to get the daybed out and just chill today. But yeah
12:50
she's beautiful. She's up. I know she's not as beautiful as she will be. Getting it back up
12:54
now means we've got probably one of our most important sails ready to sail again
12:58
Copenhagen is just one of the most chilled, peaceful places and it is like the perfect place
13:04
for us just to, I don't know just slowly get used to the boat. We've made some
13:10
friends which is lovely. Not something I was expecting. I didn't expect to make any cruising
13:14
friends here but we've met another two sea wind owners who are both really, really
13:18
lovely people and we've had a couple of days of just getting the boat
13:22
straight and relaxing and having Thai massages and coming swimming and it's just been a really
13:28
really lovely few days. So I hope you enjoy this episode. Please subscribe
13:32
leave us a comment of course and give us a thumbs up
13:36
We'll see you next week with a brand new episode. Bye everyone. Bye everybody. Bye
13:45
We are on the Balance 442. This boat is insane. We are looking at the Vision 444
13:52
Well it looks like a heat shrunk version of our boat. This galley, it is huge
13:58
So let's talk about ventilation. You know that that's what I love to talk about
14:02
The build quality here is evident. She is absolutely immaculate. Good visibility to
14:06
your sails as well. Wow. Wow. Yeah. Okay. Cool. Yeah, again I don't have
14:12
much to say
