You guys have to check out these 250 hawker meals in Singapore
0:02
In this episode, we fight inflation by discovering deliciously affordable food dishes at 250 or even less
0:13
Hello guys, we're back with another Food Finders episode. And it is super early, it is 8.20 in the morning
0:19
It's a little bit gloomy and we are at 216 Bedok Hawker and Food Centre
0:24
I think today we're gonna do 250 foods. So with inflation, of course, what we're trying to do is find value for money, budget meals still available in Singapore
0:35
Something substantial that is still a meal, that's the criteria for today's episode
0:39
What's the cheapest hawker meal you've had? The cheapest one I think would be like a $3 chicken rice
0:45
Do you value affordability or quality? Affordability, we kind of have to compromise a little bit about quality
0:51
So you kind of have lower expectations. As long as the rice isn't like undercooked, that kind of thing, I think I'm fine with it
0:56
What are you expecting for the 250 dishes we're trying today? Honestly, with my experience, I'm expecting kind of like small pieces of like meats, like a chai fun kind of going on there
1:06
I don't think we're gonna have like a big giant portion, which is fair. I mean, inflation and everything, right
1:10
That's pretty much it, let's start off the episode. Let's go try some 250 food
1:15
Okay, we're here inside the hawker centre. Actually, we had another store in mind
1:19
I think it was a mixed rice stall, but we've been waiting for like maybe an hour or so
1:24
And it's still not open, so we decided to try this store, Madam Chua's Ban Mian actually
1:29
So it looks pretty good, it's also $2.50 just for the soup. So we're gonna give that a shot
1:33
Can I get a Ban Mian soup $2.50 eating here? Each order you make the noodle one
1:48
Alright, so we just got our Ban Mian soup. I think it's pretty substantial for $2.50
1:52
Four meatballs, some anchovies, ikan bilis and some, I believe, spinach. Yeah, and it's a decent portion
1:58
Actually, it's quite a lot of noodles for $2.50, so I think it's gonna be pretty alright. Alright, the soup is actually quite flavourful, even though it looks like nothing
2:07
It looks like water, but it's really flavourful. You have a strong hit of the ikan bilis flavour and a lot of that porky goodness, yeah
2:16
You can definitely tell that it's made on the spot. It's very bouncy, it's very chewy
2:20
It is great, man. This is amazing noodles. For $2.50, this is incredible actually
2:27
It's not bad, right? Noodles are very good, man. The soup is very hearty. Yeah, it is
2:31
It's very warming. If it's a rainy day, this is perfect. The minced meat is really good
2:34
Super seasoned and it's not hard. Like most of the minced meat, it's usually kind of dense, really hard
2:39
No, this is really fluffy and light. There's like pepper and all. Yeah, a really strong hit of white pepper
2:44
So we have like two chilies here. Might be a little spicy actually. Oh yeah, might be a little spicy actually
2:50
It's simple, it's hearty. If you're looking for like a cheap, easy breakfast, this is the spot, man
2:55
Definitely try this one. So she was saying like after they close, then she makes the dough itself
3:01
Yeah, for like the next day. But you can get like yu mian, ban mian and um..
3:05
Mee hoon kueh as well. Mee hoon kueh, yes. Mee hoon kueh as well. Whichever you like and she'll just make it on the spot which is incredible
3:10
I had really low expectations to be honest for $2.50 but this just blew it out of the park
3:14
This is really good for $2.50. In fact, it's really good for just ban mian. So I'm excited to see what's next
3:19
So let's go to the next spot. Alright, we are at Jalan Batu Hawker and Food Centre
3:23
We are at the next spot which is Feng Tee Kway Chap. Currently, they've been keeping their prices at $2.50 for about 10 years
3:30
Almost every other table here is eating kway chap. So let's go find out what the what the fuss is about, yeah
3:36
Hi, can I get a $2.50 kway chap set? $2.50? Having here? Having here, yeah
3:40
How do you keep it to $2.50? Actually $2.50 is quite okay
3:44
Not everybody eat $2.50. One get around less than $20 only. So is it usually like the more like senior citizens that kind of get a $2.50
3:52
Young guys like y'all also get a $2.50. I've read online that you kept it for like 10 years now
3:57
12 years. 12 years now, wow! Thank you for doing such a good thing though
4:01
For old people, students. Ah, so you're doing it for them ah? It's a choice for them
4:06
I look forward to trying it. Thank you. Okay, so we just got our kway chap and it looks really promising
4:12
Look at this amount. Looks really silky for this one and the top looks really gao
4:17
And the crazy thing is that for this kway chap, they actually add chili powder inside as well along with coriander
4:21
Usually you just see like just garlic and stuff like that but I'm hoping that the chili will give it like a little boost
4:26
We actually have a decent amount for $2.50 which is I say really impressive
4:30
I was having not really high expectations for today but this one, this one looks really good
4:34
So we got pork belly, some tau pok, some small intestines and even half an egg which is kind of cool
4:42
Oh yeah, it's just like a subtle hint of the garlic which is really nice
4:46
The kway is actually really good. I'm really blown away by the options that we have for $2.50 here
4:50
When you have kway chap, there's kind of like this little bit of funk when you have intestines and stuff like that and I'm hoping this one doesn't
4:57
Zero funk. They cleaned this intestine so well. It's a little bit chewy as with most organs and things like that
5:02
but overall I think this is a real solid bowl or plate of kway chap
5:06
They've been doing this for 12 years now I believe she said and she kind of does it for maybe like the school kids or maybe like the elderly
5:13
who kind of comes by and just wanted a quick cheap meal. Although a lot of people actually order just the $2.50 set
5:19
they order a $2.50 set and they add on like a ton of things. So she said it's not too bad for her as well
5:26
The pork belly man, that fat is divine. You guys know I'm Filipino, I love my pork
5:30
That fat is amazing. The skin as well, really gelatinous. It kind of almost melts in your mouth
5:35
I don't think you really need to bite that hard into it. This is like a proper brace for $2.50 is amazing deal
5:41
It's amazing. So this is actually the cheapest kway chap in Singapore at $2.50
5:45
I think definitely worth the deal. Definitely give this one a try. It is insane for $2.50
5:53
They losing money on this man. I don't see how they're making money on $2.50 bro
5:58
Maybe they just take a hit for like the 20 orders of $2.50. It's amazing quality
6:02
It's better than a lot of kway chaps I've tried man. This is quality stuff guys
6:06
Let's head on to the next spot. Let's go. We are in Jalan Bersa
6:11
We're here to try the luro fun from this Jalan Bersa pig organ soup
6:15
The specialty is actually the pig organ soup, but we're here to try the luro fun. As you can see, it's $2
6:20
I don't know if she just let us buy this for $2. Rice, meat and then no pig organ soup
6:25
I don't know but it's like the weirdest thing to order. So yeah, let's have a whirl and let's see how it goes
6:29
Can I just get a braised meat rice? Having here, yes. Alrighty, we just got our luro fun
6:36
and she did let us buy just a $2 luro fun without any pig organ soup
6:40
Yeah, so we're gonna give this a try before we get into a little bit of a story time with Seth
6:45
It's pretty interesting. Off the bat, it looks like a really saucy rice as with your usual luro fun
6:51
Not bad at all. Pork belly. It's actually pretty good. Like the sauce is all pooled at the bottom
6:57
It's a little bit sweet. There's no strong gameyness or anything like that. The braised liquid is really nice
7:01
It goes really well with the rice. I think it's probably meant to go with the pig organ soup
7:07
So you get a pig organ soon and then you can get this instead of just plain rice
7:10
But even like by itself, especially by itself, it's really flavourful. Pretty good
7:15
Could you have just one bowl of this for a meal though? I think I could have this maybe with a side of peanuts or like..
7:20
It could make a meal. Yeah, it could make a meal honestly. Yeah, so Seth, a little bit of a story time into like the..
7:26
Story time? I mean the English name is like jialan besar pig organ soup
7:31
But like if you look at the Chinese name, it's actually wenxi zhu zha tang
7:37
But just opposite right is shen wenxi which is chengmeng qiqi. And you can see like they just dropped like one character from the name
7:44
It's sort of deliberate that they're trying to associate with you know the more famous historic stall that's been there for years
7:51
If I'm not wrong, previously they actually... Like the English name itself was even more similar
7:55
They changed it to jialan besar, more obvious distinction. When they initially opened, we did cover them before
8:02
Like our writer did interview the owner. She did mention at that point that she used to work for the chengmeng qiqi stall
8:10
Right as the chef there. After we put this out, chengmeng qiqi itself, the original stall actually emailed us
8:16
And told us that no, she was not a chef there. She was like the cashier, you know, borrowing the face
8:22
Trying to ride on the reputation. Ride on the reputation. All right and that wraps up the tea
8:28
My name is Seth, thank you for your time. We're gonna go to our last... Fourth and last
8:32
Fourth and last spot of our $2.50 budget meal. Let's go brave the rain
8:36
All right we're here at our last and final stop. We've braved the rain and we've arrived at Kim Kiat Palm Hawker and Market
8:43
And we're right here to try lai heng. It's probably one of the cheapest tai fun I've ever seen
8:47
One vegetable and one meat is $2.30. And two vegetables and one meat is $2.50, which is crazy
8:53
So let's join the queue and let's see what we can get. Eggplant, the vegetable and a pork
8:59
We hit $3. How much is it? $3. Hey which one was meat
9:06
Which one was meat? Dude this is... The dish had no meat on there. There's not like..
9:10
If it's meat, it's meat. You can tell right but... So I get my plate of tai fun
9:15
Funny story, I tried to do the two veggie and one meat. But apparently something in here has meat
9:21
I am not sure. I've searched high and low but I can only find the meat for here. So this whole thing is like $2.90
9:27
Anyways, they do have a wide variety of fruit that you can choose from
9:30
So I think the selection is really good. So I got some pork. I don't know what you call this but we call this chayote
9:36
This is the eggplant that we think has minced meat but I don't know. Do you all see it
9:40
Again for like $3, it's still kind of worth it for chai fun. Just a little bummed about that meat thing
9:46
It's a little bit tough, not gonna lie. But it is flavorful. It is exactly what you expect chai fun to be
9:51
Nothing's ever going to be super special with chai fun. So the pork is quite okay for the price that we're paying
9:55
For those of you that haven't had chayote, it's kind of like a gourd. Like a loofah gourd or like an old cucumber kind of texture
10:00
It's kind of like mushy. This one's not bad. It's very plain tasting
10:04
Usually you just taste a little bit of garlic. That's just simple stir-fry. Let's try my meat slash eggplant dish
10:12
I don't taste any meat at all. Again, this is the run of the mill eggplant that's fried. It's just a sweet sauce
10:16
Definitely no traces of minced meat here. A little oily, a little stir-fry. It's all that regular goodness that you get from chai fun
10:22
Usually if I order my two and two, like two meat, two vegetable, it usually goes up to like four or five bucks
10:26
But just for this, it's like three bucks. It's kind of worth it. But you can technically get $2.50
10:32
I think you just need to maybe ask her which one is classified as meat
10:37
Maybe just go for like the greenest things and then you can't go wrong. Why $3 though
10:41
I think that's still a mystery. Trying to figure out. God damn it
10:44
So this is a spectacularly very average chai fun that we have
10:48
Let's just do a little recap and review of everything that we had today
10:52
So we are back in the car as you can see. A little bit different than our usual outros because it's pouring
10:58
Which do you think was the most worth it? Hands down was the kway chap
11:04
The kway chap was amazing. Really good for its price and even in the class of just generally kway chap
11:10
I think that's the one I would probably go back to. I'm not sure if they just gave us more because you know we were holding cameras or whatever
11:16
You guys let us know if they actually do give that amount. If they do, it's super worth it
11:21
Super value for money. And then the second one would be the banh mien. Just because she hand made all the noodles
11:26
So I think that's very unique, very special. And for $250, it's a legit banh mien
11:30
That wraps up our $250, well mostly $250. Sorry guys. How did we bust
11:35
I don't know what happened with the mincemeat. On the economic rise
11:39
Give us a little subscribe and maybe press the like button as well. If you have any other challenges you'd like us to try, generally try or do
11:47
Let us know in the comments as well. See ya! See you guys next time. Bye
