Hairdresser Reacts To People Bleaching Their Box-Dyed Hair (Don't Try This at Home!)
Jan 19, 2024
Hi Beautiful! Today we watch videos featuring a toxic combination: box dye + bleach. Even saying that out loud gave me chills, but let's see if anybody will pull that off!

Oh, f***
0:02
You read the title. That's why I'm saying oh f***. Box dye, bleach
0:06
It's gonna get spooky. Let's check it out. Up first we have a video by Mianna Chloe
0:10
Or Mianna Chloe. I don't know. I never know. I'm going to be bleaching my entire head
0:16
I do have some box dye in my hair. If Brad Mondo ever watches this, I am so sorry
0:22
It's not okay. You're not forgiven. Yo, you got a lot going on in there
0:27
You have the blonde roots, the box dyed mids and ends. It's just going to be extremely difficult to lighten this evenly
0:35
Really, really, really difficult. That box dye looks inky. It looks intense
0:41
It looks like you did multiple layers of box dye over itself. So it's going to be even more difficult to lift that out of your hair
0:47
She says she blames me in the title by the way. What the f*** do you blame me for? What did I do
0:51
I haven't dyed it in like over a year. I have a lot of growth here
0:55
You can see that line there. And then I also had the goo goo hair in the back
1:00
Which is where you have it bleached underneath. So we have even more stuff going on
1:04
She also has bleach in the back of her hair that she's going to need to watch out for. Or else she risks over processing it and her hair disintegrating and falling to the floor
1:12
She's going to have a hard time seeing it while she's coloring. And it's going to be chaos
1:16
So I know I look crazy right now. I have my natural undyed hair in a little bun in the back
1:25
I'm going to start with this section right here. Got my gloves on
1:29
Woah. Okay. Maybe I judged too much at first. Because she has her hair in 4 quadrants
1:33
She is starting from the back. And she's working from the bottom up
1:37
And she's wearing gloves. Woo woo woo woo woo. What the f***. Damn
1:43
I'm going to be using powder lightener. And some salon care 30 volume developer
1:48
I like the 30 volume. She's going to need that in order to get that heavy, heavy box dye out of her hair
1:53
Maybe starting with a color remover could have been a better idea as well. I think it would have been better for ya
1:57
I made sure that my scalp was nice and dirty. You do not ever want to wash your hair before lightening it
2:04
Ooh. She knows too much. But she said she blames me. So something must have gone wrong
2:10
So Brad always says use a lot of lightener. If you use less lightener, you will just end up with a bunch of spots
2:17
And that's not the look we're going for. Wait. I love you
2:22
I'm very nervous on how this went wrong though. Because you seem to be doing a lot of things right
2:26
The only thing I would critique right now is you should have taken less hair in that section. It's a little bit too thick
2:33
It was at this moment that he knew. I am so stupid
2:37
I forgot about this piece that I just put up here. Let's do that
2:42
Guys, I know that those gloves like come with the color usually. Invest in just some nice latex fitted gloves
2:49
Because those things make everything so annoyingly difficult. They slip off. They slide
2:55
They make it so hard to feel the hair. Stay away from those gloves
3:01
It's like getting everywhere. That doesn't seem too saturated to me. You said you were going to saturate a lot
3:07
But I'm not quite seeing it. What's going on here? Also, I would definitely use foils on you
3:13
Because you need that heat. You need that hair to be burning up
3:18
Not like it breaks off, but like burning up. Like getting hot
3:22
Without the foil, it's maybe not going to get hot enough. And maybe not going to lift enough
3:26
So, good luck. Why am I doing this by myself? It's like all over the floor
3:32
Listen. It's great that you guys are now starting from the ends. However, when a professional starts from the mids and ends, we're doing it in a much different way
3:39
We are taking paper thin slices. We are laying foils in between every section of hair
3:43
That way, we can then, at the end, go back in between all the foils and paint all the roots
3:50
And everything's going to be really nice and organized at that point. People like to refer to these as a platinum card
3:54
You can look up what that is if you would like. When I say to start at the mids and ends, and you guys actually do it
3:58
it just gets really messy when you guys do it. I'm going to be honest with you
4:02
It gets a little bit messy. But there's really no way around it
4:06
So, I don't know what to tell you. Oh, it's bleaching my skin
4:10
You know what? I should probably put my hair over the bowl so it drips into the bowl. Because lightener is not thick enough
4:14
Thicker lightener next time. Thicker, thicker, thicker. Almost toothpaste consistency. This is just way too thin
4:22
It's going to lose its power real quick. Now let's get this
4:26
It seems to be getting a little chaotic. We're losing sight of what we're trying to do here
4:30
What's going on? What is happening? The other issue here is that we're laying all the hair on top of itself, right
4:36
Everything is kind of like smushed down. When we work in nice sections
4:40
we don't want to push the hair on top of itself because the lightener will end up smearing onto the roots
4:44
and getting all smushed and creating lines. It's just not going to be good
4:48
It's not going to look good. You're going to get zebra stripes on your root area
4:52
Leave some hair in between. Don't pull everything down. Don't start putting things into ponytails and just raking the bleach through
4:58
It's not a good idea. Now we have to do the roots
5:02
No, no, no! We're not doing the roots yet. Have you learned nothing from me
5:08
We have to get this process to a pale yellow in order to do the roots
5:12
Those mids and ends need to be pale f***ing yellow. They are right now dark f***ing brown
5:16
So what's going on? All I know is that in order to make this not be a complete fail
5:20
is to make sure that I get everything covered. Those roots are going to lift so fast
5:24
Her hair is so naturally light. Plus, she is not even sectioning the hair
5:28
Why are we just going on top of the hair with lightener right now? We have to do the roots
5:32
We have to do the roots. We have to do the roots
5:36
We have to do the roots. We have to do the roots
5:40
We have to do the roots. We have to do the roots
5:44
We have to do the roots. We have to do the roots
5:48
We have to do the roots. We have to do the roots
5:52
We have to do the roots. We have to do the roots
5:56
We have to do the roots. We have to do the roots
6:00
We have to do the roots. We have to do the roots
6:04
I'm having a little reaction. Oh my god. She's having a full on allergic reaction to the bleach. Great
6:12
So I just rinsed it out, and we're looking a little yellow
6:16
and a little orange. But for the first round of bleach, I really think it's not that bad
6:22
Well that makes one of us. And not one is you. I will say, your root area
6:28
the way that lightens so clean, your mittens, I'm f**king horrified. I think it's not ever going to come out
6:34
I don't know. It might, but highly unlikely. Since I used so much, I don't have any spotting
6:38
Which was my main goal for the first round, was no spots
6:42
So I'm really glad that it turned out nice and even. So I'm really glad that it turned out nice and even
6:46
Alright, this is what we're looking like. Alright, this is what we're looking like
6:50
I will do another round of bleach. Alright, round two. How many rounds do you guys think we're going to get to today
6:56
I'm guessing three. I'm going to use the same mixture that I did yesterday
7:00
so I'm going to do some 30 volume. I know that's a bit much
7:04
for lightening something that's already this light, so I'm just not going to leave it in for as long
7:10
I actually think 30 volume is perfect for this case. Honestly, you need a lot of power to lift out this
7:14
artificial pigment that's orange. It is stubborn as f**k. Okay. Guys, do not run out of lightener, if you can help it
7:24
Note to self, do not run out of lightener. I'll try not to
7:28
I put it in plastic, and then I took the plastic off. It's looking pretty good
7:32
but we can't tell for sure until I wash out all the lightener
7:36
No! It is still so orange. Honestly, you know when your hair's done
7:40
lightening, if it almost looks see-through while the bleach is still on
7:44
Because when you rinse it off, it will always be a little yellow. But when the bleach is on there, it needs to look
7:48
f**king white. I also don't even want to say that because to a trained
7:52
stylist, like, you'll know what that means. To an untrained eye, you could also push that
7:56
way too far. Like, to you, white could mean, like, literally snapping off
8:00
To me, white means, like, healthy but really blonde. This is what my hair is looking like now
8:06
It's definitely way less orange than it was before. I think I can tone it now
8:10
Don't tone it now. You need to lighten it. We gotta make it all one color
8:14
I will be using T18 on the more yellow and light parts
8:18
And I'll be using T14 on the darker, more orange parts. Don't do that
8:24
You need, like, a level 9, level 8 ash, violet, undertone, dye permanent toner
8:30
And we need to do all the root area first. All that kind of light yellow
8:34
And then, we pull it down to the ends. For a little less time than the toner was sitting on the top
8:38
Because the top of your hair is lighter and the bottom of your hair is darker
8:42
we want to kind of even those colors out. That's the easiest way I can think of doing it at home
8:46
That's not how I would do it in the salon. I would do a much more complicated process
8:50
But if you want to make it super easy, that's sort of how you do it. But what she's doing right now, she's going to end up
8:54
with really silvery roots and still orange ends. So, I don't know what the idea
8:58
was there. I hope this works. Because I feel like the top of my head isn't
9:04
quite level 10. I feel like it's in between 9 and 10
9:08
So I'm really hoping that it works. Let's just hope my hair doesn't end up looking
9:12
really weird because I used two different toners. This is what my hair looks like right before I'm about
9:18
to wash it. I'm going to get this all rinsed out and then
9:22
I'm going to dry it and we'll see if it worked. The top looks pretty good but I'm not too sure
9:28
about this here. It still looks kind of dark and it's looking a little
9:32
green. So hopefully that's just the toner making it look like that
9:36
and it won't look like that when I rinse it out. That's because T14 is
9:40
super blue and your hair is super yellow. Blue and yellow make green
9:44
We don't want to tone yellow hair with a blue base toner. So here's my
9:48
hair after washing and drying and overall it looks okay but there are a couple small issues
9:54
like right here. Oh no. It's a little bit patchy there. I'm assuming how that happened
10:02
is the toners mixed there and it like made it weird. So that's kind of sad
10:08
And then underneath it's way lighter and way ashier than on top. Oh f**
10:14
we got a lot going on here. Oh it is so spotty and it is
10:18
two different colors. Exactly what I thought was gonna happen. Oh my
10:22
God. And then my last issue is I was straightening my hair and I guess it
10:28
got a little bit too hot. This was the last piece that I straightened
10:32
and it's literally fried at the ends here. Oh s*** What? So it has been a few days
10:40
since I last did anything to my hair. It's way too yellow
10:44
down here. So I'm going to tone it again. Oh here we go again. Another toner
10:50
Alright let's do it. Even if it's still a little bit uneven I just want it to be
10:54
better than it was. That's all I care about. I'm gonna let that process for like 10 more
10:58
minutes. You know I think it's interesting. A lot of people they decide if the toner
11:02
doesn't work the first time they're gonna do it a second time and see if it works better. The toner is still
11:06
gonna look the same. It's the same level. It's the same toner. It's everything's the same. It's not gonna look
11:10
different. Am I getting my point across? It's been a few weeks since I last
11:14
did anything to my hair. But this is what my hair looks like since I last toned it. It
11:18
looks kinda yellow in the video but I think it's better than how it was. I actually really like it
11:22
and you can see my roots are growing out cause it has been a few weeks. When I
11:26
first toned it it had like that grey spot it went away so it looks way better
11:30
and I'm really happy with it. Brad Mondo I hope I didn't disappoint too much
11:34
Okay. Honestly for the circumstances and what she had to work with, pretty decent
11:38
I think it could be lightened again for sure and next time let's use the right
11:42
toner and it could be way prettier like let's get to a pale blonde and let's put
11:46
a T18 over it. T18's fine on the right head of hair. It would look beautiful like
11:50
ice queen, princess, goddess and I would love it. So maybe you'll do that for me? Thank you. Oh hey
11:56

13:32
Alright back to what you were watching before Up next we have a video by Adrianka
13:36
I just decided to bleach my hair. I will section it and I will be back in a minute
13:42
So I'm back. I have layers. I'm worried for you because you have curly hair
13:48
and it looks to be very dry. What the f*** are we gonna do? How are we gonna get this light? I don't know
13:52
You know, sections here and here. I don't know if it's perfectly even
13:58
but that's the best I could do. Listen, we definitely sectioned Did we section great? No
14:04
Am I okay with that? Yeah At least we sectioned. You know, sometimes
14:08
you just have to take what is given and I'm trying for you guys
14:12
I have 30 volume developer bleaching powder. Donors I think 30 is really good because
14:18
20 would not do the job I could also make a 25 volume
14:24
with a 20 volume plus 30 volume This would be great I would prefer the 25 volume for you because
14:32
your hair is dry. It is curly and it is fine. It's probably gonna
14:36
lift very well, very easily I don't really know for sure but from what I can see through this screen
14:42
right here that is like really far away from me it looks like it's gonna lift easy
14:46
I'm going to mix it with a plastic spoon that's starting to
14:50
get some texture I love when people mix bleach with anything they can
14:56
find around their house. I love the creativity It smells really bad
15:00
It's like killing my nose cells. You know what? Bleach really f**ks your nostrils
15:06
That s**t will go in the nostrils and burn every single hair in your nostril
15:12
If you've never used bleach before it is like so intense Some of them are really dusty and they
15:18
just go right in there F**k with your nose. Right now I think I'm done using
15:24
the brush. I'm sorry. It's just so so bad the smell and I'm obsessed
15:30
The last two people they do one stroke with the brush then
15:34
it's like I'm sorry. I'm tapping out of the brush. Guys, just don't
15:38
use a brush. When I say all these things it's me saying things
15:42
not based on what I think is best to do but what I think is doable for somebody at home
15:46
alright? Because I would definitely use a brush if I was doing the colour. But you at home
15:50
I just, I don't know if the technique is there enough to use a brush. So now my hair
15:54
are fully covered in this bleaching s**t It smells really really bad
16:00
bleaching s**t. It looks to be very saturated so that's awesome. However it looks dry
16:06
as f**k because your hair is dry your hair is absorbing the
16:10
water and the bleach and it is drying out so quickly and
16:14
dry bleach is never good because dry bleach does not process very well
16:18
I'm nervous. Now I'm working on the roots. Basically I will just split it up and
16:24
paint paint paint paint. I still have yet to see one single person colour their roots
16:30
correctly after doing their mids and ends. Everybody just kinda moves the clumps over
16:34
and paints the clumps. You gotta actually separate the hair but the issue is once your hair is clumped up like this
16:40
you can't exactly separate it very easily so that's why we do very clean
16:44
very paper thin even slice of hair but none of you are gonna do that
16:48
I don't even know why I waste my breath and that's okay. You know just know that your hair is
16:52
not gonna look amazing. Okay so I'm back I have my roots done
16:56
I'm thinking maybe I will take it off a little bit earlier than after
17:02
45 minutes. You know this is something I haven't seen in a long time. The plastic
17:06
bag. Nobody's doing that anymore. I don't know why I never call anybody out for that but you should
17:10
be covering your hair with plastic. That's very important to keep that heat in there
17:14
and to keep that bleach moisturized We gotta cover our heads and our asses. This is
17:20
not good I had a color on my hair and it was black color
17:28
so I will try again tomorrow She also had black box dye
17:34
on her hair. Ah! Now orange. Also 45 minutes not enough time. Clearly. And those roots
17:40
Bing! White as hell. We need to let those ends process you guys
17:44
before touching the roots Have I taught you nothing? I don't want
17:48
my hair to dye. I want to dye them but I don't want them to dye
17:52
That's exactly what I want for you too I don't want your hair to dye
17:56
but I want you to dye them We're getting crafty now with the foils. We got foils
18:02
happening. Alright let's see Yeah we should really saturate the hair first with our hands and then
18:12
put the foil over it. Don't try and paint it into the foil. These sections are way too big
18:16
to do that. We're working around the head I have a little bit of hope for them
18:20
but not a lot. I just really don't know about this one. It could be good
18:24
it could be horrible Oh god. We just put more lightener on the root at the same time that the ends
18:34
are processing. Why did we do that? I don't understand. We need to let
18:38
the root be on it's own. Okay? We need to lighten it again. That hair is so fragile
18:42
right now. It's curly, it's dry, it's already bleached. We're gonna bleach it again now with another
18:46
round of 30 volume. The ends need all that power. Not the root area. And
18:50
why are we not using foils in the front of our head? Ugh! This is
18:54
how my hair looks right now. I don't know what happened here
19:00
I also don't understand what happened. Why does it look no different? I've never had
19:06
a bang so I don't know when this happened She just said she never had a bang
19:12
Wait. All that hair broke off you're telling me? Oh my god
19:16
Luckily, I will be doing some darker colors. Cotton candy pink, Atomic Turquoise
19:24
and I'm feeling like I wanna use the rest of the Enchanted Forest. I'd
19:32
like to use this to my roots And that's good So she
19:40
ended up coloring her hair blue and underneath pink. I love it. I think it
19:44
looks awesome like that. I'm so honestly so happy she didn't keep it blonde because the blonde
19:48
was looking really scary and with that breakage I was just like ahhh
19:52
and then she's gonna try and tone it and it was just gonna be way too much. Good
19:56
choice. Holy sh** the technique was really scary. I hope next time that gets better. Maybe there shouldn't
20:02
be next time. Well as long as you're having fun I guess it's fine. Up next
20:06
we have a video by Destiny Case. I have officially decided to dye my hair blonde
20:10
I got the color off to take off all of the hair dye
20:14
that I've had on my hair before before I go in with bleach
20:18
She's deciding to remove all of her box dye with a color remover which
20:22
is great. We haven't seen anybody do that today and I'm excited about it because
20:26
that's a good good good first step My only issue with this color remover is that it looks
20:30
to be one that contains bleach in it, in the formula so
20:34
some of them do some of them don't. The ones that do I don't like them. I just
20:38
don't understand it. I don't like them. I don't wanna bleach the hair. I just wanna remove the artificial
20:42
color pigments. When people use these things at home it creates spotting and all crazy
20:46
sh** so uh uh uh uh uh uh
21:00
the remover definitely worked definitely did something the color right now looks
21:06
like you just removed box dye from your hair right? Like it just looks raw
21:10
it looks unnatural. It's not a great color There's a lot of work to do oh oh oh
21:20
I thought it was bad but then she turned around and showed us her roots and it
21:24
was really f***ing bad. It is spotty everywhere. This color remover did contain lightener
21:30
clearly because she applied some of her roots and not other roots and it
21:34
completely changed her root color Oh my god. You poor thing Not a second round
21:40
Not a second round No. No This is my hair after the second time
21:46
of putting the color remover in it. I actually ran out of product again because I only got one
21:50
more box. Thinking that it'd be enough Really is like super like orange
21:54
orange yellow with blotchy brown spots everywhere Oh my god. It's gotten worse
22:00
It now has very dark dark dark pieces and spots and very very very
22:06
light and a lot of orange in between. Oh my god. How is she gonna fix
22:10
this? She isn't Today's the day that I'm finally gonna try to fix my hair. I got some
22:16
quick white, powder lightener I got two beams of the highlight patch one. Also
22:22
two beams of the post-it white I got some 30 volume cream developer
22:26
The 30 volume. I'm a little scared of that 20 volume would've probably been good. 25 maybe
22:30
quick blue, super strong. Could work I don't know. But then I saw
22:34
a high lift color which is not a toner that is a permanent color. That can only
22:38
be used on hair that is not previously color treated. So that isn't gonna work
22:42
And then we have a toner for very blonde hair I don't know if we're gonna get there babe. I don't know if we're gonna get there today
22:46
Well starting with the root here is a little risky but it's okay cause she roots are definitely
22:50
a lot darker than her ends. We'll see She did all her roots first and then she's putting all
22:54
the ends in foils. But we need more foils We need a lot a lot of foils
22:58
and a little bit of hair in between to really get that hair hot enough to lighten
23:02
evenly and very bright. And we're just not doing that Whoa The hair is blonde
23:10
The blonde is blonding for sure Why is there one section of her hair that is silver
23:16
and the rest is yellow? What happened? Please tell me I'm gonna be honest. The blonde looks
23:22
phenomenal on her We started putting the ash blonde toner in and it literally
23:28
turned my hair blue right here so we took it out really quick
23:32
and it's not that bad So we took it out really quick and
23:36
decided not to do the rest of the hair So my next step is I'm just gonna get some purple shampoo
23:40
and try to just tone out the yellow and orange. The back of your head
23:44
actually looks better. Why don't we just do the whole thing with that toner? It seemed to
23:48
have been working just fine I have to get a clarifying shampoo to try to get
23:52
the blue out before I try to do anything else with my hair. I don't hate it
23:56
In due time I will get there to the shade that I want but for now this is okay
24:04
Music Music Music Music Well that was a quick video. She ended up using purple
24:14
shampoo to tone her hair. It looks better Not optimal. She definitely needed
24:18
somebody to go in there and get all those spots of yellow out and make everything really even
24:22
with the lightener before we then use any kind of toner You know that was the biggest mistake
24:26
but it looks decent enough and the blonde looks like I said before phenomenal on her
24:30
so I'll take it. But also Well if I learned one thing today
24:34
it's to not box dye my hair which I wasn't planning on doing but I think that was more for you
24:38
Maybe think twice or don't. At the end of the day it is just hair. Let's have some of it
