How to build your email list

Hi there, I'm Anthony Moore, Digital Content Manager here at Ezoic, and this video is all about how to build your email list

Now, in three years, I was able to build 125,000 people on an email list, and I was able to use that to build a six-figure content creation business

In this video, I'm going to talk you through how to build up your own email list and monetize that to bring more income to your site

Step one, pick an email software. Now, there are countless email softwares out there, both free and paid

Whatever one you choose to use, it has to do three major things

Number one, send out manual emails to your subscribers. Number two, send out automated email sequences

And number three, tag and group subscribers. Now, the real money of an email software lies in the passive automated sequences it sends out on your behalf

so you can literally make money while you sleep. The more that you can tap into this automatic and passive income strategy

the more money you're going to get for your site and the more engagement you're going to have overall, even when you're not at your computer

The reason I'm not recommending one software in particular is that most softwares can do this

The truth is, it doesn't really matter what tool you use and you might even change them over time

I would change from like one to two to three different ones over the three years I was building my email list

The point is that you understand how email markets, working works, sending out great dynamic, authentic newsletters, incorporating your income streams

into your emails. We talked about that a lot on our Zoic blog and other videos

So for now, pick an email software and make sure it does those three tasks

Step two is to create a landing page and a call to action for that landing page

Now, there are all kinds of ways you can drive traffic to your site, and you might be driving

it to your sales pages or your content or your blog, but if you want to build an email list

you want to drive as much traffic as possible to that email sign up

Now, most of these email softwares have multiple ways where you can encourage readers to sign up for your email list

Things like those automatic pop-ups that show up on your website or an inline form that's on the top of every page or like a floating bar on the side

even just an actual entire landing page where people can go to sign up for your list

If you want to build up a list, temporarily choose to drive all of your traffic to that list

You can change this back to buying your book or reading your context or signing up for your programs

but if you want to build your list, drive all traffic to that landing page, the pop-up, or the inline form where people can subscribe

Fortunately, you don't need to be a software engineer or computer programmer to make all this happen

These tools do all the work for you As long as you sign up for them and use them they have all the tools to seamlessly integrate that email capture into your website Now there a lot behind the scenes here but again it very simple as long as you can use the tools

And in fact, the best and highest performing landing pages are usually the simplest

You don't have to have six or seven call to actions and graphics and pictures and videos

The simpler, the better here, especially in the beginning. As you grow, you can reinvest your profits and experience back into your website

You can use bigger and better tools, but for now, keep that landing page simple

The simpler that your email signups are, the more subscribers you're going to get. Step three is to create a truly awesome giveaway

Now, I've been working with countless eased-volute publishers, and I've been a publisher myself for 10 years

And one of the most common mistakes I see most content creators make is when they have an email sign-up

They offer a completely boring, bland, and totally unappealing giveaway. in exchange for a subscriber

Things like, you can sign up to get free updates or sign up for my Sunday thoughts

To be totally blunt here, nobody cares about that. They care about value

stuff that's actually going to change their life. And if they don't think your email newsletter is going to give it to them

they're not going to sign up. For me, I always thought of the acronym WI-I-F-M or with them

what's in it for me? That's the question your subscribers are always asking themselves

when they come to your site, what's in it for me? Here's a list of battle

ideas, good ideas, and great ideas for a giveaway. Bad ideas. A weekly newsletter. The average

subscriber is subscribed to countless weekly newsletters. They don't need another one. Free updates

They already have free updates to your site. They just go to it. You're not giving them anything new with a free update. Same for access to your latest articles. They already have that. They're

not getting any value beyond what they can see from your blog. Good ideas. A free e-book or

free chapter from your book, a book list on interesting books in your field, a long report

of interesting data from your field or a case study involving cool things in your field

Now some great ideas, a short, concise list of important data, a PDF of personal lessons you've

learned on your journey, any kind of cheat sheet or guide, strategy guides of proven lessons or

manuals about your field. In general, shorter is better. Most people don't have a ton of time to read through a 200-page e-book or an hour-long video

We want us to be short and concise and leave them wanting more from your blog

I found that short PDFs actually work very well. They're cheap to make, they're easy to consume, and very popular in this field

I recommend staying away from long and potentially boring giveaways In fact whatever giveaway you choose to use it should be at least two of the four following traits Useful entertaining unique or valuable Nowadays users expect a lot from

their content creators. They're subscribed to probably countless email newsletters and yours has to

stick out. Take time to make a truly incredible giveaway. Step four is to make an indoctrination

sequence. Now, your hottest leads, so to speak, are subscribers who have just signed up for

your email newsletter. They have just made a decision to join your site and listen to who you are

and what you do. And you want to capitalize on this moment by inviting them into your sites

by telling them a story, a soap opera story full of ups and downs and drama and personal

connection. So when they read this, they really feel connected to you. Now, this was first coined by

Russell Brunson, multimillion dollar marketer and fast. founder of ClickFunnels, and he recommends creating this soap opera kind of sequence that

gets readers interested not just in your content and value, but you yourself as the content creator

Here's a simple summary of each day's email. Day one, sets the stage

This email paints a picture of where you were, back when things were really tough

This is before you knew what you were doing and dealing with all the problems that come

with just starting out in your field. Day two, high drama plus backstory

This email describes the biggest problem you're facing, the very issue that would ultimately help you find out exactly what your mission would be

Talk about the wall you hit and how you were desperate and searching for answers

much like your audiences. Day three, Epiphany plus the One Thing. This email reveals your biggest realization about your message

the eye-opening truth that helped you realize why you wanted to make a thing

your website and help people. What's the one thing you realize that you needed to do

Day four, the hidden benefits. This email breaks down all the great side effects and unexpected benefits of committing

to your goal. What were you able to do that you couldn't do before

What new luxuries could you experience? Day five, urgency plus the call to action

This email is a great segue into talking about your initial product and service you

want to sell. It's a simple, viable way to get your readers to buy a small offering of product after they're primed from hearing your soap opera story

There's an old marketing proverb that goes, facts tell, stories sell. If you can get your audience hooked and get them involved in your story, in your brand

they far more likely to become return visitors and increase your traffic and revenue by going to your older site your older content and staying involved over time Now that you done all this let talk about how to actually monetize this email list Now there are so many ways you can make money from an email list

and not everyone is going to be ready to buy any products or commit to anything at the beginning

Yes, they're very primed to hear your story and hear who you are, but of course

not everyone is going to be ready to buy anything or become a customer right now. That's fine

All we want to do now for that vast majority of subscribers who don't buy anything or don't hop onto your programs at the beginning is to nurture them

Constantly nurture them over the next weeks and months and make them involved, make them want to be involved

You can share testimonials, reviews, more and more stories. So eventually you evolve just from a content creator with an interesting blog to someone that actually want to follow

someone whose name they know, someone whose picture they recognize. The more that you can nurture these people over time, the more likely they are to become customers

return visitors and increase your overall revenue. There are plenty of direct ways you can make money from your email list

Some of the best ways could include simply sending them any products or services you're selling

that can buy directly through your emails. You can include affiliate links to any programs or services you're promoting

which lets you have a cut of every sale your audience makes. You can also direct them to older traffic to your sites

where they can visit your site and increase your sites add revenue. There's also plenty of indirect way

you can make money from your email list. One of the best ways is just polling and surveying your audience

and asking them, what do you want for me? What kind of content do you want

What kind of products do you want? How can I best serve you? That plants seeds that blossom over time

and increases your audience engagement with you and your site. Building an email list can sound impossible

And if it was easy, every kind of creator would have tens and hundreds of thousands of great email subscribers

who always want to read their emails. It's tough. It could be tough to find a great

giveaway, it can be tough to keep your readers engaged. But let's think about the other kinds of

traffic. The organic traffic, traffic from social media. This is a never-ending fluctuating

of the market, of algorithms, of market behavior, and it's hard to know when traffic's coming in

It can change wildly from month to month. On email list, make sure you always have consistent

reliable traffic every month. You control that email list. It can't be taken away from you

How many times have contact creators and influencers found out that the social media platform they're using

banned them or temporarily suspended their account, taking away tens and hundreds of thousands of followers

They took years to build. Building an email list takes all out of way

You are fully in control of this, and if you can learn how to keep your readers engaged

you can have consistent, reliable traffic to your site all the time
