This Is Why Empire Ended Early
Sep 2, 2026
Ruthless and engaging plot lines and regular musical sequences made Fox's "Empire" a truly unique show. It premiered in 2015 and snagged nearly 10 million viewers upon its debut. "Empire" focused on Lucious Lyon, played by Terrence Howard. He was a narcotics dealer turned hip-hop exec and CEO of the record label, Empire Entertainment. After learning that he has a terminal illness, Lucious was forced to name a predecessor for his musical empire. It's a pretty compelling plot, especially with the inclusion of the firecracker character Cookie played by Taraji P. Henson. But after six successful seasons, "Empire" came to a provocative conclusion before its finale in April 2020. It left fans wondering whether the show will return. So why did Empire end early?
