Surprising Real Name of Hollywood Celebs !!!
Feb 10, 2020
After Emma Stone revealed her real name we take a look at the first - and sometimes surprising - monikers of celebs and singers.
It's a known fact that sometimes you just have to change your name to make it in Hollywood.
Someone shares your name and you need to set yourself apart. Emma Stone admitted in awards season that she'd like to return to her birth name - Emily Stone.
Similarly, Michael Keaton when accepting his gong for Birdman told the audience he's actually Michael Douglas. He changed his name to avoid being confused with actor Michael Douglas, and chose Keaton because he liked comedian Buster Keaton.
There's plenty of other stars who have switched monikers, from Elton John to Mila Kunis, Katy Perry to Reese Witherspoon and Tyga.
Here are a few more surprising name changes.
1. Katy Perry aka Kathryn Hudson
Katy Perry used to sing Christian music under her name, Kathryn Hudson. She released a Gospel record Katy Hudson under her Red Hill Records, before taking her mother's maiden name to avoid being confused with Kate Hudson - the famous actress.
Lorde aka Ella Marija Lani Yelich-O'Connor
It's maybe a little easier to see why Lorde changed names. The Grammy winner has explained before how she chose Lorde. "I thought 'Lord' was super rad, but really masculine — ever since I was a little kid, I have been really into royals and aristocracy," Lorde told Interview magazine . "So to make 'Lord' more feminine, I just put an 'e' on the end! Some people think it's religious, but it's not."
2. Whoopi Goldberg — Caryn Elaine Johnson
Poor Whoopi wasn't actually known by her stage name until she worked in a theatre and her friends noticed her *cough* problem. She had really bad flatulence. Hence Whoopi, like the whoopi cushion.
"People used to say to me, 'You're like a whoopee cushion.' And that's where the name came from."
The surname came from her mother, who thought she needed a Jewish sounding name to get ahead.
3. Drake aka Aubrey Drake Graham.
You may or may not know Drake played wheelchair-bound Jimmy Brooks on Degrassi. He went by Aubrey Graham back then. When he left Toronto and focused on rapping in 2009 he dropped the first and last name - just for Drake.
4. Miley Cyrus aka Destiny Hope Cyrus
Miley is actually a version of a nickname her father gave her. When younger Billy Ray used to call her smiley - this became shortened to Miley, which she now goes by. She legally changed her name in 2008.
5. Julianne Moore aka Julie Smith.
Back in 2001 Julianne Moore told the NY Times that she took acting up after a suggestion from her drama teacher. She didn't actually want to change her name, but it was apparently too common to stand out. She went for a family link.
'There was already a Julie Smith, a Julie Anne Smith, there was everything,'' Moore told The Times. ''My father's middle name is Moore; my mother's name is Anne. So I just slammed the Anne onto the Julie. That way, I could use both of their names and not hurt anyone's feelings. But it's horrible to change your name. I'd been Julie Smith my whole life, and I didn't want to change it.''
6. Jamie Foxx aka Eric Marlon Bishop.
This one isn't confirmed but it's believed he picked a new name that sounded adrogynous on purpose as he felt female comedians got picked over men in the clubs.
7. Nicki Minaj aka Onika Tanya Maraj.
Nicki doesn't even like her stage name.
"Somebody changed my name," Minaj said . "One of the first production deals I signed, the guy wanted my name to be 'Minaj' and I fought him tooth and nail. But he convinced me. I've always hated it."
Apparently Minaj grew up with a few nicknames, Nicki and Cooky being two.
8. Ben Kingsley aka Krishna Pandit Bhanji.
Kingsley changed his name for something more American as he felt a foreign sounding name would hurt his career.
9. Oprah Winfrey aka Orpah Winfrey.
This is a weird addition to the list, as it's a misspelling. Winfrey revealed in 1991 that she was named after a biblical figure, but her name was misspelled on her birth certificate.
She said: "My Aunt Ida had chosen the name, but nobody really knew how to spell it, so it went down as 'Orpah' on my birth certificate, but people didn't know how to pronounce it, so they put the 'p' before the 'r' in every place else other than the birth certificate. On the birth certificate it is Orpah, but then it got translated to Oprah, so here we are."
10. Charlie Sheen / Martin Sheen aka Carlos Irwin Estevez / Ramon Antonio Gerard Estevez.
Both boys parents were from Ireland and Spain, but wanted to take on a more American name.
Charlie has said he took his from a CBS casting director Robert Dale Martin and a televangelist Fulton J. Sheen, who he said was a great actor.
Charlie legally changed his name, but Mart
