Prison Hulks: A Floating Hell

Prison hulks were decommissioned warships, such as ships of the line or frigates, that were repurposed as floating prisons. They were used by the British government to house convicts, debtors, and other prisoners in the late 18th and early 19th centuries. The use of prison hulks eventually declined in the mid-19th century.
