0:01
multivitamin and minerals are probably
0:02
one of the most common supplements on
0:04
the market and you can get them
0:05
everywhere from pharmacies to
0:07
supermarkets but do you really need them
0:09
let's talk about that
0:12
how's it going guys my name is richie
0:13
kirwan and today we're going to talk all
0:15
about multivitamins what they are what
0:17
they contain and if you actually need
0:19
them as always i want to point out that
0:21
i'm not telling you whether you should
0:22
start taking a multivitamin or not
0:24
instead i'm going to explain what they
0:26
are and in what situations they might be
0:28
useful so in this video we're going to
0:30
be speaking about multivitamin and
0:32
mineral supplements and just to save my
0:34
voice i'll use the term multivitamin
0:36
throughout the video so if you've ever
0:37
taken a supplement before it's quite
0:40
likely that you've taken a multivitamin
0:42
because they're considered to be a good
0:44
general all-around supplement something
0:45
that you don't need to think a whole lot
0:47
about right but what does a multivitamin
0:50
actually contain well the thing is they
0:52
can contain almost any mix of vitamins
0:54
minerals and even other substances in
0:56
whatever dose that the manufacturer
0:58
wants there's no set recipe for
0:59
multivitamin but many of them tend to
1:01
follow some guidelines particularly the
1:03
reference nutrient intakes if you live
1:06
in the uk now obviously everybody is
1:08
different and we all may have different
1:09
requirements for different vitamins and
1:11
minerals women for example need more
1:12
iron than men but just to be safe rnis
1:15
are usually set at a level to make sure
1:17
95 of the population's nutrient needs
1:20
are met so that people don't become
1:22
deficient in that nutrient this is why
1:24
many multivitamins usually contain
1:26
enough of each nutrient to provide you
1:28
with at least 100 of the rni if you look
1:31
at the label of your multivitamin you'll
1:32
usually see figures next to each
1:34
nutrient one will be the amount of that
1:36
nutrient which is usually written in
1:38
milligrams mg which is one
1:41
thousandth of a gram or micrograms which
1:43
is like a funny-looking ug which is one
1:46
millionth of a gram if those seem like
1:48
small amounts they are and that's why
1:50
vitamins and minerals are referred to as
1:52
micronutrients because we need them in
1:54
very small amounts protein fats and
1:56
carbs on the other hand are called
1:58
macronutrients because we eat them in
2:00
much larger amounts the other value you
2:02
see on the label will usually be a
2:04
percentage and often it'll be 100 of the
2:07
reference nutrient intake and that's
2:08
pretty much what multivitamins are for
2:10
they often have enough of some of the
2:12
most common essential nutrients in the
2:14
right amount to make sure you don't
2:16
become deficient but do you actually
2:19
need them well if you have a
2:20
well-balanced diet with enough calories
2:22
and you don't restrict any specific
2:24
foods or food groups then the answer is
2:28
you don't need a multivitamin as you'll
2:30
hopefully be getting everything you need
2:34
however if we look at population data in
2:37
the uk we can see that it's actually
2:39
pretty common for some people to not get
2:41
enough of certain nutrients especially
2:43
calcium iron zinc and vitamin d and
2:46
vitamin b12 this is often down to people
2:48
not having well-balanced diets and it
2:50
can also be down to restrictive diets
2:52
that eliminate entire foods and food
2:55
groups so for example if someone doesn't
2:57
eat red meat they might have a higher
2:58
chance of being deficient in iron or if
3:00
someone doesn't eat dairy produce they
3:02
have a higher risk of being deficient in
3:04
calcium or iodine in fact there tends to
3:06
be a higher level of deficiencies seen
3:08
in vegans than in the general population
3:10
because they avoid a lot of
3:12
nutrient-dense animal products this
3:13
doesn't mean vegan diets are bad it just
3:15
means that vegans should be a little bit
3:17
more proactive about ensuring they meet
3:20
all of their rnis another situation
3:22
where someone can have trouble meeting
3:23
their rni's is extended diet if someone
3:26
reduces their food intake for an
3:27
extended period they are going to be
3:29
taking in fewer vitamins and minerals
3:31
and that increases the likelihood of
3:33
becoming deficient in something in cases
3:35
like that for example someone planning a
3:37
long diet like for a physique or
3:39
bodybuilding competition taking a
3:40
multivitamin could be a good idea to
3:42
make sure they're getting enough of a
3:44
wide range of nutrients and in general
3:46
that's it if someone cuts out entire
3:48
foods or food groups or if someone is on
3:50
a calorie restricted diet taking a
3:52
multivitamin might be a good safety
3:54
valve to make sure they don't develop a
3:56
deficiency now i also want to comment on
3:59
two things i mentioned earlier i said
4:00
that if someone has a balanced diet they
4:02
probably don't need to worry about
4:04
getting all the nutrients they need the
4:05
one exception to that is vitamin d you
4:07
see vitamin d is not really found in
4:09
high amounts in any common foods so
4:11
what's the best source well it's not a
4:13
food source at all the best way to get
4:14
enough vitamin d is through regular sun
4:16
exposure this is because you can make
4:18
vitamin d when your skin is exposed to
4:20
sunlight unfortunately most people don't
4:22
get near enough sun that's why
4:24
supplementing vitamin d is a good idea
4:26
for many people and i've done a whole
4:28
video all about that already i also
4:30
mentioned that most nutrients in a
4:31
multivitamin will have 100 of the rni
4:34
however there are one or two minerals
4:35
that are rarely at 100 in a multivitamin
4:38
these are calcium and magnesium this is
4:40
because the rni for calcium is 800 to a
4:43
thousand milligrams and the rni for
4:44
magnesium is 300 milligrams these are
4:47
really large amounts as far as vitamins
4:49
and minerals go and it's just not
4:50
possible to fit these into a single
4:53
multivitamin capsule with all of the
4:54
other nutrients that's why if you're
4:56
worried about your calcium or magnesium
4:58
intake it may be a good idea to take
5:00
those as a separate supplement
5:01
completely separate from them all
5:02
together which brings me to my last
5:04
point if you know that your diet may be
5:06
lacking in a certain nutrient or that
5:08
your levels of a certain mineral are low
5:10
it might just be a better idea to
5:12
supplement with that specific vitamin or
5:14
mineral you may not need all the
5:16
nutrients in a multivitamin so as that
5:17
helps you make up your mind about taking
5:19
a multivitamin as always if you have any
