so this is a moving graphical floor at
0:03
the Subaru exhibit Subaru really went
0:05
all out as they usually do they had a
0:07
large exhibit it was very custom it was
0:10
very experiential and cool and this uh
0:14
is possibly the dizziest I've ever felt
0:18
and here we have our friend Pete
0:20
demonstrating how to spin out of control
0:24
on the Subaru rally experience this was
0:28
a very difficult
0:30
game or simulation rather we does have
0:34
realistic feedback to a degree but you
0:36
really have to do this course very very
0:37
slowly because you get out of control
0:39
very very rapidly as you can see it's uh
0:43
very it was really hard to go through
0:46
I'm told that the trick is to basically
0:47
stay in first and second gear and go
0:50
really slowly the whole time let's zoom
0:52
in a bit and then we'll move on and
0:55
we'll go through the rest of the show uh
0:58
it was an interesting show uh we went on
1:01
the second press day which is also
1:03
industry day but uh some manufacturers
1:07
didn't participate some participated but
1:10
cut their budget quite a
1:12
bit and nobody was giving out anything
1:15
for free other than plastic cowboy hats
1:18
which I think is a first no coffee no
1:21
water uh no food plenty of uh good food
1:25
outside at the halal cart
1:28
but so here's a quick look around the
1:31
Kia exhibit uh you can see the flashing
1:34
Kia ev6 sign this way pretty
1:37
cool taking a quick spin through the
1:40
Honda exhibit going back to Kia from the
1:43
other side and there is the Toyota
1:47
sponsored uh sports festival right in
1:51
the center for reasons I do not quite
1:55
understand here's a dizzying little spin
1:58
for another section of show
2:00
uh you can see Tom the photographer at
2:03
the end there's some painted up lexuses
2:07
hundes and downstairs we go to the tuner
2:12
area but we'll be heading right back
2:14
upstairs in just a moment as I guide you
2:17
through some slides and I'm going to be
2:18
taking you on a little tour through the
2:21
2024 New York Auto Show so at the
2:24
opening as almost always is for is a new
2:28
special edition Mustang will set you
2:30
back an awful lot of money this is
2:32
really just about the most Mustang that
2:34
you can get there but this is a closeup
2:38
of the suspension of this rather special
2:40
vehicle it is pretty well modified
2:42
Beyond an ordinary Mustang GT well a
2:45
reflective paint job on a Bronco you
2:47
might notice that the wheels and the
2:49
stripes very definitely catch the
2:51
headlight they're like uh the safety
2:53
strips they're pretty amazing you will
2:56
definitely find your car in a parking
2:58
lot at night a stripe package like this
3:00
was used on a Ford back in the 70s uh
3:03
moving on I just wanted to photograph
3:05
the other side because Nissan really
3:07
went all out too with their displays and
3:11
you see that they uh hung their own big
3:14
lights square but this is actually quite
3:16
a nice display Nissan's in some trouble
3:19
now trying to move their cars rather
3:21
desperately so it made sense for them to
3:24
spend on marketing uh stellantis which
3:26
also has some issues moving cars right
3:28
now and has decided that they won't
3:31
Market as much which is an interesting
3:34
choice all the way in the back corner
3:36
which is what I was really trying to
3:37
focus on is a Chevrolet corner and that
3:40
used to be the Chrysler and Dodge corner
3:43
so this is a relatively new Chevy pickup
3:45
it's a ZR2 were now in the Chevy Corner
3:48
that used to be the Dodge and Chrysler
3:50
corner so this as you see is the equinox
3:52
active this is a before I retouch this
3:56
is an after I retouch a little it is a
3:59
Chev Chevy Silverado electric pickup uh
4:03
I was in one of these it's comfortable
4:05
it's like an ordinary pickup I often
4:07
take two pictures in case I shake uh
4:10
here is an overview of Chevrolet going
4:13
from about halfway through they had a
4:15
very long deep display uh for public
4:17
days they'll probably move things around
4:20
quite a bit and add more displays and
4:22
have more room for people this was one
4:24
of the press
4:26
days uh this is part of a Lamborghini so
4:29
let's head back out for a second here's
4:31
the Lamborghini they had one car
4:34
Lamborghini Manhattan is presumably the
4:36
dealer that owns the car and allowed it
4:39
to be used it is fenced off even from
4:42
media which actually come to think of it
4:44
might be a good idea it is the Urus Urus
4:49
I don't know how to actually pronounce
4:50
it I've seen it it is a superar for
4:54
sure um and just take a look again at
4:56
these brakes they use the bright
4:58
fluorescent green color that really is
5:01
that bright drilled rotors for heat
5:04
dissipation and I think that they chose
5:07
that color green because Dodge and
5:09
others have used the Brembo red for so
5:13
long uh not much to say it's a bunch of
5:15
Kia they have a huge section as did
5:18
Hyundai there is really plenty of room
5:21
this year at the New York Auto Show even
5:23
though they went from two floors to one
5:25
floor in terms of show cars it used to
5:27
be only cars on top only trucks on
5:29
bottom here's Kia again incidentally let
5:32
me go back a little bit you notice those
5:34
boxes up there bringing in your own
5:36
lights is very expensive and getting
5:38
them installed and hooked up and all
5:40
that it is quite
5:42
pricey uh pretty much all the automakers
5:45
other than Ford economized this year by
5:47
using the standard lighting and in some
5:50
cases adding like these little overhead
5:53
light boxes I keep this was my favorite
5:56
uh Driving Experience I think the ev6 GT
5:59
driving
6:00
experience uh powered by Windows which
6:03
might be why it's not actually working
6:04
right
6:06
now uh here's a closeup in case I'm
6:08
wrong and it's actually powered by
6:10
something else but regardless it ain't
6:13
working and so I find this I found it
6:16
highly amusing to see these guys playing
6:18
around in what looks like file explorer
6:22
uh let's see random Kia and this is out
6:24
here because I thought I could get a
6:27
good shot of it anyway I like the color
6:29
on this one I miss having different
6:31
colors so there it is Honda really just
6:34
had a bunch of cars on a white carpet I
6:36
thought this was interesting because
6:38
they just left this huge aisle pretty
6:40
much uh here is the Buick and GMC corner
6:45
and on the right is Pulstar and in all
6:48
the way in the back you can barely see
6:50
Volvo all the way in that back corner
6:52
and there's Audi but if the crowds are
6:55
really really thick getting to the
6:57
Volvos beyond the pole star and the Audi
7:00
then don't worry because you got plenty
7:02
of aisle way for them to walk on here's
7:05
a shot down Hyundai row uh on the right
7:09
are some highly decorated lexuses Lexus
7:12
had a thing uh big sign up saying why do
7:15
we race and Tom said because we've got
7:18
tons of money Genesis had these three
7:20
bright orange cars I really like the
7:23
color they stand out unless you're in a
7:27
construction zone in which case they
7:29
might get lost uh here's the Toyota area
7:33
and this is where they kept the car
7:35
again this might all change for public
7:37
days but it was an interesting design
7:41
Choice here's more Toyota area they kept
7:43
the trucks separate they're flying a
7:45
great big American flag although they're
7:48
not an American company they do have a
7:50
lot of factories here they try to have
7:51
one in every state so that they can uh
7:55
wield some control over Congress and
7:57
avoid ever being regulated uh more
7:59
heavily and we've got uh this beautiful
8:02
Packard here as you might have noticed
8:05
uh it was owned by Kem Abdul Jabar which
8:08
is a great claim to fame but it is a
8:10
great car otherwise except that somebody
8:13
shoved in a Chevy V8 and a Chevy
8:16
automatic told by the man who owns one
8:19
as Packard's ad campaign used to say ask
8:22
the man who owns one so I did and he
8:25
said that uh real Packard has no trouble
8:29
holding its own and really should keep
8:32
its original engine if at all possible
8:34
uh here's the interior of the car uh you
8:37
can see the spotlight there it wasn't a
8:39
police car but it has an extra Spotlight
8:41
it was a luxury
8:44
car here is a picture of the Jeep
8:47
off-road trail from a
8:49
Jeep here is a picture of the screen
8:52
that you see in in the Jeep as you go
8:54
through with the pitch and roll the
8:56
off-road
8:57
uh screen here we are just a little bit
9:01
pitched we were actually more pitched
9:03
before but I was having some camera
9:05
trouble the main one was I was trying to
9:07
shoot video and forgot how you do it
9:09
here we are coming down off of one that
9:12
Grand Cherokee that you see getting
9:13
ready to go up that Steep Hill is not
9:16
actually doing it it's just there to
9:17
block it during the rain but apparently
9:20
they're serious about having Grand
9:21
Cherokees and wagoners going over all
9:23
these obstacles which is pretty
9:25
impressive returning again through the
9:28
rain pretty cool looking thing I don't
9:31
know how hard it is to get over that
9:32
particular
9:36
obstacle about those four big green
9:38
tubes those are actually covers for
9:40
massive concrete tubes that uh I have no
9:43
idea what they're for but they're there
9:45
so Jeep covers them up and uh makes them
9:48
into their own so one of these shots I
9:51
was trying to get a picture of the
9:52
underside they basically had these three
9:55
vehicles a couple Wranglers and a
9:57
gladiator going through uh most of the
10:00
time at fairly High rate of speed when
10:03
nobody when nobody from the media was
10:05
actually in them so they're going around
10:06
and around and I was trying to get just
10:08
the right picture and I was really
10:09
trying to get the underside of one of
10:11
these and I finally posted one on um
10:14
here we go I think this is the one I
10:15
posted on snow power to show you what
10:17
the underside looks like while it's
10:19
going over an
10:20
obstacle so there they go
10:23
bye-bye at some point I'll run out of
10:26
these and then we'll go back inside oh
10:28
this is um an interesting one because
10:30
you can see just how much articulation
10:33
these things have all four wheels on the
10:35
ground as it goes over that at all times
10:38
no wheels in the air so you get Maximum
10:40
Traction that way as opposed to uh
10:44
relying on fancy uh devices like
10:48
traction control there you see again the
10:50
wheels are coming out that's the solid
10:54
axles which can have more articulation
10:57
than the independent suspens mention
11:00
usually these are Robert Downey Jr's
11:03
dream cars you can win one of them um I
11:08
don't know why you really want to um
11:12
okay now we have the uh Plymouth police
11:15
cars here and the New York Police
11:18
Department supposedly uh standardized on
11:21
Plymouth for a long time because one
11:24
detective was driving his own Plymouth
11:26
during a chase scene that was uh cop in
11:29
The French Connection the movie The
11:31
French Connection and he essentially
11:33
caught up with the criminals not because
11:35
he had a more powerful car but because
11:37
his car stayed in one piece while the
11:38
criminals car literally disintegrated
11:41
going over city streets and the city
11:44
which had been having some reliability
11:46
and durability issues with its cars
11:48
until at up to that time bought a bu of
11:51
plymouths and they never looked back
11:53
they stayed pretty much all Plymouth
11:55
with some Dodges uh same car up to to
11:59
1989 which is the last year that they
12:01
made the Plymouth Grand Fury that you
12:04
see here and the Dodge
12:06
Diplomat and then they kept them as long
12:08
as they could before moving on to the
12:10
Impalas that you see uh the first one
12:13
being the one right behind it and then
12:15
the Jelly Bean ones that you see off to
12:16
the right and then when GM stopped
12:19
making Impalas they had to go over to
12:20
the Fords and they didn't stay with them
12:23
as long as you'd think they moved on to
12:26
basically a range of Civilian cars
12:29
because they figured that uh I think
12:30
that the assumption that Mike Bloomberg
12:33
made was that if you have an efficient
12:36
hybrid
12:38
car uh you're not you know most of the
12:40
just just to clarify most of the
12:42
diplomats in Grand Furies that they
12:44
bought were slant sixes so they weren't
12:45
all that fast a modern hybrid will
12:48
probably outrace with those guys pretty
12:51
easily so you can't out race Motorola is
12:54
the saying they rely on the radio to
12:56
call other units over so I think that
12:58
the belief which appears to have been
13:01
borne out was that the savings on fuel
13:05
overcome any extra expenses on shock
13:08
absorbers wheels and such another
13:11
picture of the same car I was trying to
13:12
make sure I got it I think I was also if
13:14
you look at the patterns of of the
13:17
spotlights and the glare in the
13:19
windshield you can see how was making
13:21
slight changes to the polarizing
13:24
filter closeup with the grill I don't
13:26
know what I was really hoping to achieve
13:28
with that
13:30
this is a bit
13:32
better funny thing is is that underneath
13:35
these were basically Plymouth valaris uh
13:37
they were the the the Diplomat and Grand
13:41
Fury were the upscale version of
13:44
the
13:45
Volari and then they dropped the Volari
13:48
so the police drove the upscale cars
13:50
that replaced
13:52
them you can see that they have the
13:53
holes drilled out uh this is another
13:56
fury it's not a Grand Fury it's just a
13:58
plain old Fury and this was a much older
14:02
police car that they used before that uh
14:04
you notice a difference in color schemes
14:06
we'll go back for a second this is the
14:09
uh dark blue uh off to the right that
14:12
Transit police car has the uh actual
14:14
pink color it's usually associated with
14:16
New York police cars and or green and
14:20
black this was New York police colors
14:22
for many many many
14:25
years and you'll see a few of these as I
14:28
tried to hold the camera study in this
14:29
particularly dark location here I did
14:35
it uh both Dodge Chargers with
14:38
motorcycle in
14:39
between not sure why they're different
14:42
colors here were just some uh vehicles I
14:44
thought were interesting there's the
14:45
hook and ladder old school bus a nice
14:49
old within city
14:51
bus and this you know is not original
14:55
equipment because the bus fairs were not
14:57
275 when the this bus was in service
15:01
there's an unexplained uh Moab
15:05
Gladiator no idea uh whose it was why it
15:08
was there other than this one plaque in
15:10
the wall saying Overland
15:12
Park uh here's my attempt to capture the
15:15
Lucid air this really required a better
15:17
camera than I
15:19
had uh here's a picture of one of the
15:22
drive Motors they're really very clever
15:24
they're very light and they're
15:25
engineered for maximum heat dissipation
15:28
they trying to have the least
15:31
possible uh wind drag and the least
15:34
possible heat so that they could um have
15:37
a very efficient battery very efficient
15:40
motor and they succeeded there was a lot
15:42
of engineering that went into these
15:44
excuse me the uh finger was resting on
15:48
this a bit too much uh the Lucid is
15:51
really an incredibly well-designed car
15:53
and if you look at the materials they're
15:55
all kind of unique it was designed in
15:59
California and they wanted to make it
16:00
look that that way so they used unique
16:03
textures that is real
16:05
wood uh they used an open pour wood and
16:09
Maserati and
16:10
Fiat and uh well Fiat tried to do this
16:14
with the Chrysler 300 at one point and
16:16
it ended up looking like 1970s plastic
16:18
wood grain this is really a much nicer
16:22
implementation it looks looks just
16:24
beautiful in person and not like all
16:26
other
16:27
cars here's here's the
16:29
interior uh the dashboard is wider than
16:34
most and then you have the little slab
16:37
lying
16:38
down it's a neater more uh purposeful
16:42
design than you normally see and again
16:45
the materials are are unusual it's just
16:48
a look that has all the same stuff in
16:51
roughly the same place so that it's
16:53
predictable but it's just nicer to look
16:57
at and it's really a very impressive
16:59
design that they came up
17:02
with here it is uh photographing from
17:05
the back seat and there's a little thing
17:08
from the back
17:10
seat uh the seat controls pretty
17:13
conventional in in terms of
17:16
location uh here is the frunk the front
17:20
trunk here is a the best Lucid uh logo
17:25
that I was able to photograph by the way
17:27
these Lucid airs here a better one these
17:30
Lucid airs have a coefficient of drag of
17:35
197 uh for reference a neon was about 28
17:39
and um the Plymouth Superbird was 28 197
17:43
is crazy efficient so here's the battery
17:46
again it's a small
17:48
battery uh by many
17:53
standards and it's a light battery but
17:55
the Lucid air has a really good range
17:59
because it's just so efficient here I
18:01
was trying to get the depth of the trunk
18:02
I'm not sure if I got it or not it's
18:04
really not a large car but it has a lot
18:07
of interior space it's very well
18:10
packaged so here we are downstairs in an
18:12
odd room with a stage and a bunch of
18:14
tuner cars we weren't quite sure what
18:16
this uh was all about we did photograph
18:20
the lone Durango looking sad and lonely
18:23
in the corner uh you might notice a
18:25
ProMaster van that had absolutely no
18:27
distinguishing characteristics on the
18:29
outside there I have and this is the row
18:32
of a few Mopars 1 2 3
18:35
4 uh and this was pretty much it except
18:38
for a one charger at the
18:42
[Music]
18:52
end here's one of the hats that buck was
18:55
giving away a large section of tuner
18:57
cars for the public and Fiat house on
19:00
the way home three views of Fiat house
19:02
I'm not sure why Fiat thinks that uh
19:05
cars in fashion go together that well
19:07
but they do clothing and now they do
19:10
housing well that's all I've got for the
19:12
moment I'll just leave you with this
