What Happened To Sony Mobile Phones: The Journey From CMD To Xperia
2K views
May 11, 2025
Sony has been making phones since the early 1990s before entering into a joint partnership with Ericsson in 2001 to form Sony Ericsson. Sony later bought out Ericsson's stake in 2010 and became Sony Mobile. I share the list of Sony mobile phones I have owned since 2001 till date, and I also examine how the brand is doing in the market today. hello this is Mr
0:11
mobility this is a Sony Xperia
0:15
Pro this is a
0:20
flash this is a flash from the past or
0:23
what in today's lingo we call a
0:26
throwback sony smartphones were
0:29
originally known for their music prowess
0:32
or should I say Sony phones because I'm
0:35
talking about the early 2000s i'm
0:38
talking about
0:39
2004 to
0:41
2010 sony smartphones were known for
0:45
their music prowess that generation of
0:48
Sony phones included the Walkman brand
0:52
if you wanted a phone that you could
0:55
plug into your ears and listen to music
0:59
with good quality audio reproduction
1:01
Sony phones were it and then there was
1:04
the merger with Erikson and they became
1:06
Sunonny
1:07
Erikson and then Sony bought out Erikson
1:12
from the partnership and we ended up
1:14
with the brand known as Sony mobile
1:18
today and their peculiar branding for
1:22
Android phones is the Xeria brand so
1:25
whenever you see or hear of an Xperia
1:27
phone you're definitely talking about
1:28
Sony this was produced during the time
1:32
of the Sony Ericson joint venture and it
1:36
was after that that Sony bought out
1:38
Ericson and decided to go it alone but
1:41
what has happened to Sony mobile phones
1:44
since then i remember that in my country
1:47
and in many other countries Sony was
1:49
present sony phones were sold today it's
1:53
a miracle if you can find a Sony phone
1:55
to buy in my country and in many other
1:58
countries the brand seems to have
2:01
receded and considered territory to more
2:06
prominent brands they seem to be more
2:08
content to play a niche game and that
2:11
niche
2:12
game seems to be around photography now
2:16
when I said that Sony phones were known
2:17
for their music that might have sounded
2:19
odd to you because you probably know
2:21
them for photography today
2:24
yes this is the route that Sony has
2:27
chosen to go and yes Sony has produced
2:30
some some of the greatest camera phones
2:33
in the last two decades if you are
2:35
around in the early 2000s you're
2:38
probably aware of that despite the
2:42
camera prowess of modern Sony
2:46
phones the brand simply has
2:49
not sort of endeared itself to the
2:51
masses i have seen some of their recent
2:54
phones they produced for camera
2:57
professionals sorry photographic
2:59
professionals how many photographic
3:01
professionals are out there and will buy
3:05
a smartphone for professional reasons i
3:08
doubt it they'd likely still go with
3:10
their professional standalone
3:13
cameras so that's the dilemma that Sony
3:16
has found itself in today the phones are
3:20
not as popular as they used to be they
3:22
are still solid high quality
3:24
phones they also tend to be more
3:27
expensive than competitors in the market
3:30
in the same category i'm not sure
3:33
why perhaps it has to do with where Sony
3:36
phones are manufactured the last time I
3:38
checked they were not made in China they
3:40
were not made in India i think they were
3:42
made in Japan and that cost
3:45
significantly more than a manufacturing
3:48
operation in China Vietnam India Brazil
3:53
that might be
3:54
it but Sony phones today are definitely
3:58
more expensive than their counterparts
4:00
in the market they've still got great
4:02
cameras but not a lot of people are
4:04
experiencing them because they are not
4:06
everywhere one they are scarce to find
4:09
and two they are more expensive
4:12
i really wish that the Sony story would
4:15
go differently i wish that Sony phones
4:17
will become more popular i have owned
4:20
quite a number of Sony phones in the
4:23
last two decades quite a number because
4:26
I used to be a huge fan here's a quick
4:28
trip down memory lane to the Sony mobile
4:31
phones that I have owned the very first
4:33
Sony phone that I owned was the Sony CMD
4:36
J5 was a tall sleek feature phone back
4:40
then because it didn't run any
4:44
smartphone operating system or
4:46
whatsoever it was pretty much a feature
4:48
phone with an alpha numeric keypad and
4:51
an antenna in the days when phones
4:54
mobile phones had antennas after that I
4:57
have owned the Sony Ericson P68i the
5:01
P800 the P1 the Sony Ericen T00 the
5:06
T230
5:08
T610 the Xperia X2 Xperia X10 mini pro
5:13
one slider whose name
5:16
I I am forgetting now there was a
5:20
pinkish device and it was a slider with
5:25
an alpha numeric keypad and then yes
5:28
this guy the Xeria Pro those are the 10
5:34
11 Sony phones I have owned but looking
5:37
through that list now it occurs to me
5:39
that I haven't owned a modern Sony
5:43
smartphone
5:45
yet ah that's something but here we are
5:49
i still have this in my museum and it
5:54
works i just haven't charged it so sorry
5:58
I can't show you how it works what the
6:00
interface is like this this was the
6:02
early stages of Android if you are new
6:05
to the smartphone space or if you're new
6:06
in the smartphone space you probably be
6:09
shocked to find out how ugly Android OS
6:12
used to be
6:14
android has become much more beautiful
6:17
and userfriendly than it used to be in
6:20
the early stages thanks to several
6:23
refinements over the years by Google i
6:26
will charge this up one day and take you
6:29
through the user interface so that you
6:34
can you can have a look at what it it
6:38
used to be like to use an Android phone
6:40
i really do wish that Sony mobile phones
6:42
were still as available as they used to
6:45
be and that they didn't cost an arm and
6:47
a leg it would be nice to use one again
6:50
but even if I wanted one now I'd
6:52
probably have to order from one of the
6:54
global online vendors and then have it
6:56
shipped to me and it will cost me much
6:59
more than it would cost getting
7:02
something from the competition i'm not
7:05
sure if I am that much of a fan
7:08
it it doesn't sound like an attractive
7:10
proposition to me i'm always on the
7:12
lookout for value when it comes to
7:14
smartphones so uh I'm not sure anyway
7:18
the Sony Xperia Pro of course you can
7:21
tell from the quic keyboard this is from
7:24
way
7:29
back so I haven't used a modern Sony
7:32
smartphone but perhaps you have if you
7:36
have used a Sony smartphone that was
7:37
released in the last 5 to 10 years do
7:40
share your story if you're still using
7:42
one today how is it what's what's
7:46
fantastic about it please update me i'd
7:49
like to know exactly what I have been
7:51
missing if at all if at all I have been
7:54
missing anything i also understand that
7:56
Sony is not exactly fantastic with
7:58
software updates which is a bummer
8:01
because these days I'm interested more
8:03
in brands that offer timely responsive
8:06
software updates for their products but
8:10
let me hear your story what Sony phone
8:12
are you using now which ones have you
8:14
used in the last 5 to 10 years please
8:17
oblige me in the comment section thank
8:19
you and don't forget to like this video
